  1. ^^Back then no, I remembered even little details (we took a test after each book we read to see if we've progressed), but as I said, I didn't practice in a long time so I'm back to being slow
  2. I'm a pretty slow reader, imo. But my problem is mainly that I usually don't read every day, unless the book is fantastic and I want to know what happens next Which is why it takes me a lohong time to finish a book I might probably read in a day or two. I think it takes me an hour to read 50 pages, like lopeanha. Though when I was practising rapid reading before, I read a 400 page book in an hour and a half, which was actually pretty slow compared to other people... What can I say, I don't practice
  3. ''Amory Blaine inherited from his mother every trait, except the stray inexpressible few, that made him worth while.'' This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
  4. Aww Pixie, of course I won't hate you We can't all agree on everything I can understand people getting that impression of Paulo's books, because he tends to write in such a ''preaching'' way, sort of. Some people like it, and some don't. You are one of the latter, whereas I am one of those who love his positive thinking, how ever idealistic it may be. I am glad you didn't find it to be utter cr*p, and found something about it you did like
  5. ^^Omg they're posing!!! That is so cute How did you get them to do that, food?? I have a guinea pig too, but he's of the furrier kind
  6. How about... Just Can't Get Enough/Strangelove/Shake The Disease - DM Take On Me - A-Ha Spiralling - Keane Relax (Take It Easy) - Mika I Don't Feel Like Dancing - Scissor Sisters Fascination - La Roux The Wildfire (If It Was True), God Knows, TV & Me, Mean Street, - Mando Diao I'll try and think of more... Actually, I chose these as examples, I recommend anything DM, Mika, La Roux, Mando Diao
  7. @ caliLily When we first got our cat he didn't know how to meow at all - I know, sounds silly He opened his mouth, looked like he was yawning, made a sort of sigh-sound and closed his mouth again. Which was weird. And funny. Anyway, you should hear him yell now He's meowin alright lol. Maybe your kitty just can't or won't make a sound now, but will in the future. Although, I don't know what happened with it causing the broken rib, maybe it's still sort of traumatised. Good luck with that, and yes, your kitty is cuuute
  8. Yay! Be sure to tell me what you think.
  9. Last night I downloaded some ebooks and started reading F. Scott Fitzgerald's This Side Of Paradise - it's addictive I reluctantly went to sleep last night, and when I woke up in the morning, I got up just to read the book before I go to town lol. Just what I needed, I'm hooked
  10. You know who I'm rooting for *please don't kill me* I vote for The Alchemist
  11. Hi there Pixie :)

Just wanted to answer your question about the PC quote in vodkafan's thread (I thought this might be more apropriate :D)...

Anyway, yes, indeed, the quote is from The Alchemist. It's a great book, imo, I hope you do read it (and tell me what you think!). It was very motivational for me, I hope it has that impact on others too :)

  12. I have both friends who love to read, and those who read on occasion. In general I think there's still a lot of teenagers who read. Recomending books to those who read less, or don't read at all can help, if you know the person well and think you know what might suit them. I even started reading more in my teens, but I am rather anti-social lol
  13. I think we read enough in high school, given how many classes we had, and how many times a week we had them. Similar to what vesolka wrote, we studied the periods in lit history, and read a few books from each period. We read Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles, Homer, Dante, Boccacio, Petrarca, Shakespeare, Voltaire, Flaubert, Balzac, G. de Maupassante, Dostoyevsky, Gogol, Hemingway, Salinger, etc...And a whole lot of our our ''native'' literature, and a fair amount of poetry.

    Hello :)

Hello Stormi, welcome to the BCF
  15. Hi MB, welcome to the forum This is the place for book adicts to meet and talk, that's for sure...
  16. Read some more of The Winner Stands Alone which I've started during vacation. I was a bit unsure about the begining but it's quite interesting now.
  17. This thread made me think of a friend of mine (I hope she won't mind me mentioning them xD ). She had borrowed Ulysses from the library and was sooo happy about reading it. And after a few days, she tells me she can't find it anywhere So she looks for it again and again, and doesn't find it. She goes to the library for an awkward meeting with the ol' rude librarians (I think I've written about them before) to tell them she had lost the book. Anyway, she had to replace the book with another one (same year, edition and all), but luckily she found it in a shop. ... And then after a few weeks, after doing some major room cleaning she tells me ''Guess what? I found Ulysses!'' so I ask her where and she replies ''Under my mattress'' Anyhow, I'm sure you all know how thick a book this is, and neither of us could believe she had slept on it for a while and not felt it And how it got there in the first place... She still hasn't read the book due to bad memories associated with it.
  18. Hello umm Idiot welcome to the BCF, I'm sure you've already noticed you'll love it here
  19. Even though I don't think this is what you're looking for, I'm still gonna tell you because of how you feel. Or rather, don't feel I love to read Paulo Coelho's stuff when I'm feeling down, depressed, sad, empty, alone...whatever. Bad in any way. His books always make me feel positive and optimistic. They're comforting. Imo. I recomend By the River Piedra I Sat and Wept, The Alchemist, Brida, Veronika Decides to Die. And I agree with the poetry idea, I think that might work I like Baudelaire (same thing as with PC applies here...). I hope you find something you like and feel better soon
