  1. The "classic" nature of a book is only measured by the time it's been around, how long it's survived. So, let's take a popular book, Harry Potter for instance. For it to be considered a classic (to me, it still isn't), it has to be around for at least some decenia. This, of course, doesn't mean a book is bad or inferior in any way. Just not that resilient to the sands of time, if that makes sense (Not a native speaker, people! ). A classic is a work people keep coming back to, that's universal, and applicable to almost every age in time.
  2. We haven't met (I'm painfully new around these parts) but I bid you a most heartily welcome back.
  3. Well, I try to but it's hard. It's rather expensive in these parts (import) and I haven't got much time to dedicate to it. I have seen Akira, Paprika and Ghost in the Shell though. That must count for something, right? Well, I'll let you know what I think of them when I've read them( must start with that blog sometime..). So, yeah, looking forward to some further discussions with you.
  4. I would get killed, literally killed (well, incapacitated at least) for having that work in my possession, whatever the reason. My gf is Brazilian, and extremely sensitive to racism. Can't say I blame her, really. It's really hard for her sometimes..
  5. Damn, you make me want to pop the old season 1 in the DVD-player again.
  6. I've heard a similar discussion a while ago. A friend of mine was interested in purchasing 'Mein Kampf' and was pelted with a reasonable amount of flack because of it. He proclaimed it was for historic interest only, and that he didn't harbour any racist feelings, but it didn't take. The poor man. I'm personally fine with racist material being available to the public, but not because I support such works. I just don't believe in censorship. It's the worst thing that can happen to the book medium, and really any medium. Let the people decide for themselves on what to read, think what they want. As long as they don't harm society by putting those thoughts to actions, that is.
  7. Sounds fascinating. I sure hope my 1963 version will be just as good. I'll let you know what my thoughts are on that one. Got to read it first.
  8. Hello there Jonathan. Welcome to the forum Why don't you tell us something more about yourself in the 'Introductions' section? It's fun and all the cool kids do it so, yeah..
  9. I feel like a rewatch this evening. 'Sideways' sounds like a wonderful choice, now doesn't it? Yeah, I'll pick that one.
  10. I surely will. Many thanks for the warm reception everyone, it's quite touching.
  11. This is Halloween - Nightmare before Christmas
  12. I spend a pretty steady 30-40 euro's a month. Mind you, this includes graphic novels and manga. It's a pretty costly business sometimes, so I'm trying to cut out on those. 'Normal' books are cheaper + they give you more bang for your buck.
  13. I already did. Not a good woman/man ratio on this forum.. Not that it bothers me (in fact, I find that women are most interesting to discuss art with), but it's definitely noticeable.
  14. I've bought the 1963 version in my local bookshop, but translated into Dutch . It's a newly illustrated edition, which looks absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for your recommendation.
  15. Why thank you. It's generally well-liked by book readers. I wonder why?
  16. That's what I tell myself when I meet someone new and he/she doesn't like me. It isn't my fault, it's theirs! Does wonders for my ego.
  17. Anyone familiar with Sun Tzu's The Art of War? I desperately want to read it (quite a fan of all aspects of history), and I'd like to hear some opinions.
  18. Once Upon a Time in America (1984, Leone), for all kinds of reasons. If you haven't seen it yet, you simply must. It's technically a gangster film, but it really is so much more than that. It rises above that label. Leone's most accomplished film, in this afficionado's humble opinion.
