Another physics one. Not learnt today but I often think of it and it's pretty impressive. The Sun loses 4 million tonnes of mass every second. But because it's a big ol' fatty that's only one 10-million-million-millionth of 1% of its mass which is just over 0.1% of its mass since its birth. ...I found the other thing I was looking for. In Physics of the Impossible by Michio Kaku he says that anti-matter behaves exactly the same as normal matter would if the normal matter was travelling backwards in time. He also says that "it is the explanation currently accepted today". I did not know that and it blows my tiny mind. Whether it turns out to be wrong or not it's amazing.

I'm off work this week so should really have done better. Also I hope I didn't make it sound like I had read 232 pages just today! I am really enjoying it. There are still some bits that drag but just as I think I'm getting bored something exciting happens such as Now I have finished my waffles and chicken so I should get back to it until The Mentalist comes on. I hope you get your mojo back soon. Sometimes it's good to take a rest. I might take a day off after I finish The Historian. I think I'll need it.

Well I've read nowhere near as much as I meant to today. On page 232 of The Historian. On the (hopefully) upside though I got an email saying the Coldfire trilogy has been sent so I'm hoping it gets to me tomorrow rather than next week so I'll actually be in.

Well I'm on page 98 and I should read a bit more before bed. I want to watch that programme about Eddie Izzard running the marathons. I'm really enjoying it. Drags a bit in places but mostly manages to keep the intrigue up and has you wanting to find out what's going to happen. Especially with the Has me wanting to learn more about Vlad the Impaler in a way the film didn't manage. Which surprises me actually. The fact that there are such blatant references to Vlad in there. I'm sure Francis Ford Coppola got in legal trouble from the descendents of Vlad for doing that. Either they lost the case or I'm completely making it up.

Right. I had better get reading. I won't write on here till I've read at least 100 pages. I'll see you in a week.
-
...crud. Although I got through Jonathan Strange pretty quickly because I enjoyed it. I thought I'd start this since I'm of this week so I can actually devote days to reading it rather than just evenings when I'm tired.

Just finished Trick or Treatment by Simon Singh and Edzard Ernst and started The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I'm hoping it's an easy read otherwise it's going to take me ages considering the size of it.

I just noticed I wrote "sell" rather than "use" when it came to the stickers. But I'm sure I could get you some boxes. The shop I work in is 40 minutes north by slow train. I know you're very picky about the quality/newness of your books but I would say I've saved a couple of grand since working there. Having said that because the books are so cheap I tend to pick up ones that I only vaguely want so often never read them. But also pick up ones I'd never normally find so it's swings and roundabouts.

That website is amazing. I'd love a tattoo but I always end up thinking "I could buy books with that money" or something similar. Although that isn't going to stop me ordering pizza tonight so maybe I should just stop thinking that way.

Haha. For O, Ten Things I Hate About You or both? Maybe there are others I'm not even thinking of. And now I might make you hate me. I really like Ten Things I Hate About You. Not even in a guilty pleasure type way. I just think it's a fun, entertaining film. I know it's an update of Shakespeare but I don't think it's trying to be Shakespeare.

Ahh yes. It was obvious Thanks

Yes I forgot about the uncorrected proofs. We sell a few of those. Heheh. You would be happy with our shop at least. We use easily removable stickers. Don't leave a trace! Writing in them is annoying but just as bad is the funny square labels that some places and most car boot sale people use. They're impossible to get off without leaving a residue or ripping the cover. Grrr.

Just out of interest arewenearlythere what do the S, A and H stand for in SAHM? It's probably something obvious that I'll feel silly for not guessing but I must know!

I think the word "soul" is used to describe a lot of different things so it's hard to say. I don't even believe humans have souls but I still use the word in certain contexts because it's helpful. But I'd agree with Nollaig. It sounds like a nice idea but when you think about it more it means everything that gets used by people would become very soulful indeed. I know the book is kind of giving something special back to the reader but there are other things that do that too, like a DVD for a film lover.

Just ordered The Coldfire Trilogy. All three. So if I don't like the first one I've pretty much wasted

Books being cheap and more often than not free..
Steeeeve replied to Johnny Carson Whit's topic in General Book Discussions
I wouldn't say it's my opinion but I do wonder if it's not the case that everyone would enjoy reading if they just found the right book for them. Sometimes I hate reading if I'm reading a book I don't like. The only thing that gets my goat is people who are proud of not reading. I obviously have nothing against people not reading but to boast about it is another thing. You see it on facebook a lot "i dont read! lol!!!" Well done. -
I am very very envious. I like the ye olde street type signs as well. This thread has inspired me to spend a lot longer in Waterstones (my only real local bookshop anymore) than I used to. Still nowhere near as long as some people but...yeah. I've kind of forgotten what I was going to say.
-
I don't I'm afraid. Mine is just a local peace hospice one. Edit: Just found this site on Google http://www.ekklesia.co.uk/lifestyle/charity_gifts/oxfam_gifts/send_books which seems like it might tell you how to do it. I didn't read it all. They're probably not allowed to sell them. We try not to sell books that were given away free with magazines and whatnot, unless they're really nice in which case we will usually. Someone would have to be an absolute wotsit to report a charity bookshop for doing something that small. On furniture we sell we have to have the correct fire labels and that's something we follow to the letter but for books...notsomuch.

I think I can safely say this Chacarron song is the worst thing I've ever heard I've never been able to tell if it's a joke or not.

Damn search engine. I'm sure there must be a Dark Knight thread but I couldn't find it. Anyway a youtube vid that edits The Dark Knight slightly Also if anyone likes that they should watch Shatner of the Mount in the sidebar.

WHAT?!?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There's no way they'll be able to do it justice! Tut.

I realised something today which I think I've always known but just been too stupid to take any notice of. I shouldn't try and read while I'm lying down. I think my body thinks I'm trying to sleep so I just get tired really quickly and can't concentrate. I've also taken to reading in the pub when my mate goes out to smoke his cigarettes. Sometimes I wish he'd take longer
-
Haha. I lol'd at that. Reading Catch-22 eh? I have to try that again soon. I failed miserably last time I had a go. I didn't mind Keanu too much while I was reading A Scanner Darkly. He kind of suited the character he played in that so when I read it he was welcome in my brain. But in Dracula his accent was just...not good.

I was pretty sure it is being adapted with Natalie Portman. Wait there!!!... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1374989/ there you go. Edit: Another one I just remembered is the Foundation series by Asimov is being developed for the screen by Roland Emmerich *sigh* Another Edit: The Bell Jar is in development with Julia Stiles too. Since both of those are just in development who can say whether they'll actually make them. Especially Foundation which would be pretty difficult to carry off.

Damn the both of you. Your shared excitement made me look up the trilogy and now I want it.
