  1. You know I was wondering the same thing myself. To an effect, violence is what should cause us more discomfort. But we all love a war scene detailed to a notched blade, don't we?
  2. I hate one thing that some personnel do in bookshops. They follow you around. I hate loathe and detest being asked "May I help you sir?" by a bookshop personnel when I've been in a bookshop for about ten minutes without touching a book. Sure I don't expect them to be entirely aloof and allow people to steal books but let them search those who're walking out of the shop instead of stalking us in the shop. That is why I usually frequent this old used book shop. Even if I stay there for nine hours, they don't ask anything beyond whether I would like yet another cup of tea.
  3. Aw I can't get time enough to read a word now that college has started! I feel so bad about that...
  4. I think he means the new books. I love old books for their smell too... I've never particularily observed the scent of new books though. Oh yeah, I hate the smell of Bantam books though. They just smell.... sweaty.
  5. Anyone else have a problem with the use/description of sex in books? I usually don't like scenes that describe sex in literature. I tend to skip through it unless it's part of the actual storyline. And even then, I just search for reasons to not read it. Ironically, I had to write a sex scene in my own book. What can I say? The characters are heretics I tell you. They never listen to me and induce me to become a hypocrite of a sort. I'm ok with sex mentioned in the passing without showcasing the author's ideas for porn screenplay. Or when the scene involves more dialogue than the actual add-the-legs-and-divide-by-two bit.
  6. mine's just my name with my year of birth. I just use this all over the web, in every forum I've ever joined because I'd forget anything else.
  7. I simply adore the audiobook version of the Wheel of Time. I listened to the first 6 books in 2 months last year
  8. I haven't ever seen in but I definitely will if I ever come to the UK. Though a word advice. Read the book first.
  9. 1. Les Miserables - Victor Hugo 2. Don Quixote - Cervantes 3. The Brothers Karamazov - Fyodor Dostoevsky
  10. My favourite would have to be The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordon. In particular, the first three books: The Eye of the World, The Great Hunt and The Dragon Reborn. I like LOTR, but I sort of feel a lot more has been done for the fantasy genre since Tolkien's day. Sure, he started it all. But there are so many more mentionable names now. The single fantasy book I enjoyed the most was Belgarath The Sorcerer by David and Leigh Eddings.
  11. Oooooh! My favourite Christie!!! Enjoy this one!! Relish it rather! +Watch the Mouse Trap. It's still running somewhere in UK right?
  12. lol I suffer from lapses of tears of joy rather than of pain though. I even felt that when I watched Wall.E. Mostly though, my reasons for tears are related to my own memories. For instance, I still feel warm in my cheeks and a tear or two leave my eyes when I watch the ending sequence of the Dark Knight. But that's because I've grown up reading Batman comics. Same thing for Superman Returns when everyone shouts in joy after he saves the place. the theme song is enough to bring me to tears. My favourite movie!!! It made me proud to be a poet. lol O CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN!
  13. damn I haven't read a word in two days and from tomorrow starts my next/last semester. Sigh
  14. Towers Of Midnight by Robert Jordan And Brandon Sanderson (Nov '10~ hopefully.)
  15. heh I hate it when people in the queue don't move forwards or when they don't have their cash ready. But I hate that everywhere, not just in bookshops In bookshops in particular I hate it when people use their cellphones and talk like they have to yell at the person instead of talk softly. And I hate it when people don't put books back in the same place from whence they came. And I hate loathe detest those pals that accompany novice readers into the shop and go "Oh the usual shop I use is much larger." "You don't want to read that, the sequel sucks." "That author is god I tell you." I just want to throw a collector's edition hard bound copy of The Fountainhead at them.
  16. haha so true. My parents are both indian so I sort of get that from either end lol
  17. haha I do remember when my dad worked at this mall where the people from the books section told him that I looked like a kid who would ask to live at the bookstore if I could. I remember that my fondest times with my dad were when he worked there. Since I was an employee's son, I could stay past closing time. He left office at 11 PM... He'd take the lift to the ground floor and I'd take the stairs just so I could walk through the books section... I tell you there is no place more romantic than a silent/dark bookshop at 10:30 in the night. Talks volumes about my point of view of romance.
  18. aw... I wish I knew what it felt like to have family book shopping time
  19. 1. Jean Valjean - Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. I love how he is a near Christ figure in many ways. He's my favourite fictional character ever! 2. Gandalf - The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien Ah! Mithrandir! Without him there is no old Wizard that Merlyn of old used to be! The scene where he kicks Balrog ass is priceless! 3. Matrim Cauthon - The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan He saves most of the series with his character. In many ways, he is what Merry of LOTR should have been. Doviandi se tovya sagain! Carai al Caldazar! Al Ellisande! 4. Holy Belgarath - The Belgariad and the Mallorean by David and Leigh Eddings Holy, considering he is Aldur's slowest student. Beldin is more hilarious in more ways than one but then again what the heck. Add Polgara to the scene and the books become hilarious!! 5. Albus Dumbledore - The Harry Potter series by J K Rowling. Albus Percival Brian Wulfric Dumbledore. One of the sole reasons that I read the series. I knew he defined the word badass in so many ways when he said he treasured his chocolate frog card more than his order of merlin. Heck, I'm like him in a way. I want to be a published writer if only to get myself an entry in the world encyclopedia. "Well - it's just that you seem to be labouring under the delusion that I am going to - what is the phrase? - come quietly. I am afraid that I am not going to come quietly at all, Cornelius. I have absolutely no intention of being sent to Azkaban. I could break out, of course - but what a waste of time, and frankly, I can think of a whole host of things I would rather be doing."
  20. haha I always go alone when I'm planning on skipping lunch to select books for the semester holidays. I walk in with about 20$ and walk out with 10 books. That's the fun part. Selecting the maximum amount of good books for that price. Sadly enough, when I have money, the books I want are never there and when I'm short, there are too many good books to choose from.
  21. I'm an emo guy so a lot of movies have made me cry. I don't remember any particular movie that made me cry right away though... Unless you count Beauty and the Beast, but that was about 6~ years ago.
  22. An hour? A few minutes? Or do you make up your mind before stepping in, thus spending only the time needed to pay the bill? I remember I've spent as much as 9 hours in a bookshop once. 9 hours to select 10 books. They gave me seven cups of tea that day. Mom thought I was lost or something.
  23. Finished Mark Twain's Joan of Arc earlier today and started reading HG Well's War in the Air.
  24. I used to do it as a kid but now I take enough time as it is selecting books. Though the shop I frequent lets anyone read any book for free. Serves tea even! They say they want to promote browsing. Yet it's hard to do there as it's an used books store and there's not much space to do that. Yet the shop is really amazing.
