  1. Hi Verna totally agree about The Book Thief.
  2. Finished The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry
  3. Aw man.....6 more books for the pile. Because it was sunny day the charity shops had their books outside the shops in boxes and they seemed to just flutter and attach themselves to my hand as I went past....good job I only had a couple of quid in my pocket. Love-act M.E. Austen It's A Small Medium And Outsize World John Taylor Good Behaviour Molly Keane The Rituals Of Infinity Michael Moorcock The Duelling Machine Ben Bova The Siege Of Krishnapur J.G. Farrell
  4. Doesn't sound weird at all! Families with a mix of cultures are always interesting and (usually) I find them fairly easygoing. I bet they will be really pleased that you speak English too. Hopefully they will be a big improvement on your last neighbours.
  5. lol yes the female approach is just to empathise . ....Methinks I may be on dangerous ground here bye
  6. Or you could put the whole thing out of your mind and read the nice book James sent you
  7. You will have to move the Oceania book to verify if it is the only thing holding the shelf up Frankie; until you do that you won't know; then you have to examine the shelf supports to see why it has collapsed; It is most likely something that can be easily fixed. That is the male problem-solving approach.
  8. One trouble with many of the books I am reading now is that they are "keepers". So this month I am making an effort to read a few from my TBR that I know I won't want to keep, in order to free up some shelf space (and preserve sanity). First of this type I have just finished: Survival Of The Fittest by Jonathon Kellerman. I can't remember how I got hold of the book. It was OK. Will review it soon.
  9. Hi Palagrin! I always liked Kate Bush. Her songs always made me think. I never did fully understand "Running Up That Hill" but I always took it literally that the couple swopped genders- took each other's identities but then could not get back. I think the original video gave me that impression...what do you think? Another musician who has great lyrics and reminds me very much of Kate Bush is Bic Runga . Have you heard any of her stuff?
  10. I have just ordered me some second hand Frank Herbert: Dune, The Green Brain and The Heaven Makers plus the Dune DVD. I am really looking forward to reading them, although I have read them all before years ago. Also on a trip out yesterday with the kids I treated myself to a primer on Western philosophy for only £3.99 Philosophy 100 Essential Thinkers. This looks easy to follow and places each thinker within their particular tradition or school of thought.
  11. Oh forgot : I was very surprised at your dictionary definition pontalba so I have learned my new thing for the day!
  12. Lol if this discussion keeps going I will be forced to watch the film
  13. I thought pandering just meant appeasing; to make the pandering persons' life easier? For instance a bad parent will pander to the childrens wants and not impose discipline . I never thought it was anything sexual? I have never heard the word used in that sense here anyway.
  14. Kindle Keyboard but without wifi.....I just go to Wetherspoons for the free wifi if I want to go online or download books...still read treebooks too, I have no real preference when it comes to the actual act of reading but of course kindle is easier to hold and handle...and I can start another book as soon as I have finished the last.
  15. Hi Raven well defended on all points! You are right about Captain Kirk..no female alien was safe with him around .
  16. Shock Doctrine sounds brilliant. I had already heard of disaster capitalism from Big Son who comes across it in his line of work. Must read this thanks.
  17. Curious about this series, I have the first one in my TBR right now, maybe I will read a couple of pages tonight....
  18. Oh no! Poor old Jack. RIP mate Thank you for all the great stories.
  19. Wrath of Khan and The Search For Spock were both awesome films for me and the best of the first crop of movies
  20. Hi pontalba, I have been watching the original series too. Uruha was indeed completely convincing as a ships officer with a job to do, and she had that dignity. I remember Whoopie Goldberg in an interview saying what a huge impression the character of Uruha had on her personally, with so few black role models in TV to look up to . I haven't seen this film, but in the first film what did the new Uruha bring? Sex and a pretty face. I definitely DO think there was a dumbing down and selling out in her case. Is there any role model for a young teenage girl (of any colour) to look up to? No. Both Kirk and Spock have really impressed me re-watching the original series, at least when an intelligent writer is behind the episode. Spock's character is really corny and says the most stupid things in the first episode (Where No Man Has Gone Before) but by the second episode (The Corbomite Maneuver) his logical thought processes are both more apparent and yet more understated and subtle. Which is the mark of a good actor to convey something without being obvious.
  21. Haha I can't even remember my kid's names half the time....
  22. Jack Vance Lyonesse trilogy (fantasy) The Wind Up Girl Paleo (SF )
  23. Well it's a bit on the thick side for a start would make a good doorstop that is always a bit intimidating no matter what the book.
