  1. Yours and Samsiren's reading lists are so different to Hayley's uni list ....are you a second year Emelee?
  2. I am glad you liked 1984 Hayley. I have read that a few times spaced years apart, the first time when I was about 15, when I happened to catch the old black-and-white TV version starring Peter Cushing. That is a chilling piece of filmmaking if you can get to see it. I find the book even more frightening now, because in my own lifetime I have seen some of the things in the book that I thought fanciful have came true; ie the manipulation of thought by language, and of deliberate confusion by misinformation. You will probably become more interested in the politics as you get older and of course Orwell was all about the politics, but it's enough for now that you enjoyed it!
  3. I always feel satisfied when that happens and I lose a book that way: I have lost 2 copies each of Black Like Me and The Blue World just like that.
  4. Thanks Kylie!! That is why the opening paragraphs I have read make no sense! I am missing books 2,3, 7 and 11
  5. Since having my kindle, I now have only about 20 books in physical form. I have 96 on my kindle.
  6. Hi all, need some help. I read the first one in this series, and I have all the others on my kindle- the trouble is I don't know which order they come in, I only have the titles Can I ask someone to take the trouble and tell me the titles in order please?
  7. Finished Stardust yesterday while in London. The day before, I had to watch the DVD again as the the story is so different. The ending of the story is very gentle, while of course the film version is like pumped up on steroids - and the skyship section is only a couple of pages in the book whereas they make a big deal of it in the film, no doubt because of Robert De Niro playing the captain. I have rearranged everything in my kindle into various collections and started some more collections in preparation for when SF Gateway opens for business.
  8. Glad you enjoyed Before I Go To Sleep Kidsmum.
  9. You certainly didn't fail as a host Frankie. If even one person reads a book they normally would not have picked up...that's a success
  10. Amazing that you just happened on all those Beauvoir and Nin books/diaries just when you needed them Frankie- I am sure they are not common books. What exactly is your thesis about, or have you said already and I missed it?
  11. Hi Kidsmum sorry missed your reply. The feeding tube must have been 'orrible glad that is history for you. Glad you are eating better. Just finished Citizen Soldiers a history book by Stephen E. Ambrose. Now reading Stardust on my kindle.
  12. Is the SF gateway open for business yet Karsa? I just keep getting the same page..
  13. Never really thought about that, I tend to read whatever catches my interest , also since being on here at least 50% of my books I read because of other's reviews; but I also have some favourite authors who's style I like (Jack Vance, Sarah Waters, and recently Neil Gaiman). I think certain authors can be good for you( or "speak" to you) at different times of your life; for instance when I was young I read a lot of Andre Norton . Personally there are enough "rules" in my life already, so when I read I don't want to impose any more on myself
  14. And that, in my opinion, is his worst book! The Blue World or Slaves of the Klau would really blow your socks off.
  15. I feel sure you will enjoy it Kidsmum. And I am glad you seem better as you are reading more again Hey Kidsmum when are you going to let me buy you lunch ?
  16. I don't think anybody here would jump to that conclusion. To be honest I don't know anything about the bloke. Having read the book you are probably our resident Che Guevara expert now.
  17. Hi Carl. Welcome to the forum. Two questions: you like scifi have you ever read any Jack Vance? He is my favourite author. Also have you ever shot anybody in the course of your job?
  18. Just finished it. Very good book. I was surprised to read at the back that it was the result of a Novel Writing course. And it is possibly going to be a film. I have now read 36 books this year. Only 16 books to go to reach my target of 52 before Christmas.
  19. I know this is probably too late Ben as you may have bought them already, but an alternative source for these books would be the students on the same course at your uni , who have just done their first year and have finished with these particular books. That's what my son found when he got there, everybody was selling course books at cheaper prices and he later did the same. If you live near your intended uni you could visit their bookshop or maybe register on the student forum and get in touch with these students online-my son found loads of ways to save money this way.
  20. that sounds like a challenge Ooshie I'm going to have to read it now and get in touch with my feminine side or see if I have one.
  21. Yes maybe. Thanks for the info.
  22. Hi Kidsmum, The Slap was good but I have not figured out exactly what to think about it yet. It had (to me) many levels and meanings. Before I go to sleep is great so far. I am only half way through but it has not let up it's pace yet. I can't tell you anything about it as I don't want to spoil it for you. It will grab you from the first page I feel sure. Very tightly written but great descriptions of the heroine's feelings. Ever present sense of dread. Unless the plot really goes to pot in the last half I think this might be one of my best reads this year.
  23. Ages since I did any reading, been too hyper and rushing about. I finished The Slap last night. Very perplexing book. There was much more to it than just the slapping incident. I believe it was written as a topical social commentary not just a novel. Now reading Before I Go To Sleep which gripped me from the word Go. Although I checked and it actually started with the word The.
  24. Hi Kidsmum are the Hunger Games books children's literature too then?
  25. Welcome KindleWorm, this is indeed a great place, lots of nice people and great book ideas.
