  1. Thanks Paula, that was a quick reply! I may read another, but I feel that I might get fed up quickly with the basic "vampire boyfriend" scenario, so might like to remember it best as a stand alone book. What are the Harper Connelly books about? Any reviews on here?
  2. Ah, interesting. I have not seen the film or read the book; but it sounds good. Thanks for the review Bobblybear!
  3. Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris I enjoyed this book. I haven't read anything else in the vampire genre to compare it with, but I liked the way it did not take itself too seriously, I felt the author was having fun with us and with the story. The vampires were menacing and quite traditional. Eric in particular was someone you feel it is best Sooky does not get noticed by. (Unfortunately for her, she does.) It reinforced (to me)my theory that this genre is a female sexual fantasy; there is quite a lot of sex in the book. As with everything else, the author unashamedly has fun with this idea of human/vampire interaction. Some things were very funny, even more so for being totally unexpected I probably won't read another one but you never know. It was a quick (one day) read, and it entertained me and made me forget my troubles for a few hours, so good for Ms Harris.
  4. An old 60's horror classic Quatermass And The Pit. Got it from Amazon.
  5. Welcome back kidsmum I finished Dead Until Dark this morning. Will review it later.
  6. I would take: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Room Jane Eyre
  7. I am over half way through Dead Until Dark. It is quite funny, first vampire book I have read.
  8. I hope so too
  9. Just finished Sharpe's Rifles which was recommended to us by kidsmum. It was a quick easy read and I enjoyed reading something uncomplicated with lots of fighting. Say does anyone know how kidsmum is doing? I PMd her a while ago but got no reply.
  10. Welcome scarymary! Lots of likeminded people on here.
  11. Yes I did that the first year I was here (last year). I enjoyed it. I read every book on my TBR list except 2, which I carried over to this year. I think if you just keep buying books it can affect your sanity a bit. I think the most I ever had in my TBR pile was about 20 , and that was not for very long because it upset me.
  12. They both look a bit interesting Ooshie
  13. Me? I read scifi, biographies of people that interest me, anything Victorian, Jane Austen, anything by Jack Vance, books about science or history and anything that gets recommended a lot here in reviews I usually get interested in.
  14. Sorry Isandriena I don't (or haven't up to now) read anything in those two genres but now you have asked that you will most likely get lots of recommendations from others on here. I agree about giving up on books you don't like. So much other stuff out there to read!
  15. Hi Isandriena, I hadn't heard of any of the books in your already read list, what genres are they? I see you also don't mind dumping a book if it fails to grab you.
  16. He who drinks Australian thinks Australian
  17. I put a couple of your reviewed books on my wishlist Ooshie thanks.
  18. No which Ishiguro book would you recommend for me Ooshie? I will give him another go. As for next book, at a reading rate of 50 books a year I have enough for 2 years reading on my kindle untouched so I will browse through later and see what jumps out at me.
  19. Your reading list looks good Hayley, I am with Lady Macbeth in liking Jane Austen, have read Persuasion, Northanger Abby and best of all Pride and Prejudice. Finished American Gods only last week and it is still in my mind, enjoyed that very much, will be interested to read what you think of it. Good luck with your uni course, I went to see my own son's Graduation yesterday, we are very proud of him.
  20. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro I was to be honest quite disappointed in this book. It is told in the first person by Kathy, and the style is conversational, she is telling of events long past , coming up to the present. This is actually an alternative reality, which given current technology is probably possible. There is something special about Kathy, and the other children she grew up with in her isolated boarding school. The first third of the book deals with Kathy's earliest recollections and I found this kiddy bit very boring. I could see what the author was trying to do, making the teacher/guardians seem slightly sinister. The salient points about their predicament were told very mundanely however in conversation so they have no impact whatsoever. The second bit of the book follows Kathy's personal relationships as she grows up into adulthood and then goes her own way. The last part of the book is an ending of sorts when Kathy and Tommy find their original guardians and question them. Overall the book feels a bit "empty" to me. I wanted to know what would have happened if any of the children had rebelled or at least struggled. I haven't seen the film but unless the plot has been changed in a big way I don't see how this could be an interesting film.
  21. Just finished Never Let Me Go last night. I will review it later today.
  22. Hi Malcore no it wasn't an intellectual journey the monolith was a gateway, it took him through space and time to somewhere else. That is more clear in the film. I agree the ending with Bowman becoming a Star Baby is less than clear as to its meaning. My best guess is another forced evolution to another stage of humanity. I like the film and the concept and most of the story but I find Clarke's writing rather boring to be honest.
  23. I just found out last night there is a TV adaption of this book, http://www.virginmedia.com/tvradio/tv-highlights/tv-reviews.php did anybody see it, if so what did you think?
  24. Sorry to hijack your thread again Peace- I just found out there is a new TV version of Sarah Waters' The Night Watch and it was on TV last night! This one is not set in Victorian times though. http://www.virginmedia.com/tvradio/tv-highlights/tv-reviews.php
  25. I remember Abby was just as enthusiastic about this one. Think it would appeal to teenagers Paula? I am trying to wean mine off vampire books....
