  1. Hi Vinay, I have expanded my reading a lot in the last couple of years so I don't think I gave your extract a fair shot, for which I apologise. There was certainly never anything wrong with your writing style anyway. Hmm mythology I am thinking Roger Zelaney suddenly..... I would certainly be interested in reading it and maybe Karsa would too, he reads a lot of fantasy but different authors than I am into.
  2. Buy It Claire buy it you know you want to......it's just one more on the pile , that can't hurt Mwahahaha
  3. I like Poppy's avatar.
  4. Shamefully I still have some Austen novels I have not got around to reading yet so certainly count me in
  5. That's excellent Peace looks great very stylish. Is it actually meant to be a ladder for a high sleeper bed ?
  6. They are playing in Chelmsford on Saturday August 18 Claire.... I am thinking about going but probably wont be able to get the night off work unless I take it unpaid
  7. Yes that makes a lot of sense. For instance the styles of Gothic architecture and Gothic paintings have nothing in common.
  8. Your periods of reading sound nice and peaceful....mine are very rarely like that, there are always other people around. But I can shut everything else out no problem. In fact I am sure that reading is actually what keeps me sane at work, it's like visiting somewhere else and not being me for a short time.... If its a breaktime at work I read while I am eating. Just lately I have been trying to read for 10 minutes or so when in bed just before sleeping like I have heard normal people do. It seems a good habit to get into.
  9. Hi Poppy it really varies....I am a fast reader. If I had time to just sit and read till I was sated I would read a normal size novel a day and start the next like I did when I was a teenager with no responsibilities. Happy days those. Nowadays I read in 30 minute snatches at breaktimes at work or at odd moments at home. Maybe an hour and a half a day in total . But there are some days when I don't get to read at all. June was like that, which is why I only managed 4 or 5 books for the month. How does that compare to your reading habits?
  10. Will add Pure and On The Beach to my wishlist Ruth thanks.
  11. Laura will you marry me You are a true "man's girl" being obsessed with the Spitfire and liking all those machines . Good review
  12. I finished The Windup Girl. Excellent read. 3 other books in various stages of comprehension. Will rip through them next few days . Reviews on Saturday as usual.
  13. Welcome Kirk, I am sure you will have lots to add to our forum, your lifestyle must be interesting. There is a music section, I hope you will tell us more about your music. Read any Science Fiction yet?
  14. I have just discovered these musicians, and this is the one I like best:
  15. Hi Vinay congrats on finishing your book. Is that the one I read an extract of a couple of years back or something completely different? What are you going to do with it now?
  16. Good Luck Kylie. I thought you were already editing at home though and had been doing that for a while?
  17. Aha. OK thanks for that. So does that mean in some ways you could for instance describe Wuthering Heights or Great Expectations as Gothic?
  18. In their opinion they are wonderful friends they care about what you are doing all the time .... can't wait to hear what is Mr Pointy?
  19. Great review Poppy this one is on my list..Eowyn is a nice name isn't it? Also the kind of sound one might make if one suddenly sprained one's ankle.... I am very proud of you for reading Slaves Of The Klau, can't wait for your review of that one, hopefully you are on a reviewing roll... (Alan ! Bring more cake for Poppy at once to keep her strength up!)
  20. Can you two (Ben and Hannah) give me a description (from an academic point of view) of what elements make a novel Gothic ? It is a word often misused I feel. What is the official line here?
  21. Ah well you can never have enough friends. Unless they are stalkers.
  22. So are you bookless at the moment Poppy? Not reading anything?
  23. Look forward to reading the review on that one. Funeral Director! What next?
  24. Hi Kylie, I have seen Sleeper and found it quite funny. He makes a few serious points in it about human relationships but in general it is lighthearted.Seen Metropolis a long time ago. Way ahead of its time, worth watching.Seen Battle Royale . Not bad. Seen the 1950's BBC version of 1984 with Peter Cushing. Is that the one you mean? It was great.
  25. Frankie what are you doing here? You are supposed to be getting ready for your date!
