  1. Curses ! I have started reading one of my "doorstops" nearly 600 pages so that will slow me down a bit.
  2. Hi Hayley, actually Doom is the only game I have played on PC and just a few times because my friend thought I would like it. I have never had a console game player although my children have Playstations and X boxes. The only rpg I have played is Dungeons and Dragons (the board game) with the little miniatures, which I have played with the kids. Never played anything online.
  3. I have always felt that emotional moods and feelings are at least partly a product of brain chemicals, enzymes, hormones; thoughts pass by like clouds across the sky or ships across a sea. All should be examined and lived through , whether good or bad; they are part real because they link us to our physical bodies but also part illusion. At the seat of all is my brain, which is like a quantum generator, it generates different posible outcomes based on my free will and is capable of changing the outside world. 51 years of life experience has made me reason that I have a spirit, which is the Life Force, linked to my physical body , which can be trained to be robust to physical and emotional adversity; but when the Life Force leaves my body it will die. I believe that I also have a soul which carries on after death. I believe there is a God but I dislike organised religions which twist stuff about and try to tell me God wants this or that according to doctrine; religions are a control mechanism. I don't actually think God cares very much; we misunderstand his game. Sorry about the rant, I was just feeling a bit philisophical haha. I will read Tolle soon
  4. Good review Steve. Going to have to re-read this soon now.
  5. haha don't you have some baking to do Claire ?
  6. Enjoy your holiday Cory. Good luck with your essay.
  7. Hmm, why would I want to control my feelings? Never mind I will find out when I read I guess.
  8. Finished Beautiful Stranger by Hope Donahue. 28 books to go. 80 pages into Dunkirk : Those who were left behind
  9. Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin, which I first read as a teenager.
  10. I have The Power Of Now in my bookshelf , I picked it up at work where somebody had dumped it. Not read it yet. At first glance it does not seem to be advocating any sort of cult or set of weird beliefs. Let you know what I think after I read it.
  11. I like to play boardgames like Lost Cities, Ticket To Ride and Cargo Noir and I also used to play miniature wargames with metal miniatures. My friend at work does "mods" for PC games. He has recently got me into a mod called Brutal Doom which is a more bloody version of original Doom. I think this what he calls "a first person shooter". I really am terrible at these sort of games though. I much prefer the boardgames because 5-6 people can all play at the same time and its more fun.
  12. I read all the spoilers. A book not really aimed at me obviously, but she seems funnier than Tucker Max, who I suppose is the sort of male equivalent. If you haven't read any Tucker Max- don't worry you are better off in blissful ignorance
  13. Just finished The Wench Is Dead, an Inspector Morse mystery (my first!) by Colin Dexter. 29 books to go.
  14. You bring up an interesting point Coryographies.
  15. Have taken note of Guy Burt thanks to your review and will maybe explore him next year thanks Karen.
  16. It is hilarious Brian...bump this one up to the top of your pile.
  17. You make a good point Carla; although it seems obvious now you have said it, once a book is written it becomes frozen in time, like a window into the past. I never thought of that before, thank you.
  18. Hello and welcome!
  19. That sentence sounds so surreal I am still laughing every time I look at it....outsiders have no idea the fun we have on here with books and the crazy things we do for books...thanks Poppyshake. I just read A Short History Of Tractors In Ukranian......started and finished all in one day. Starting the next one now it's a biography; Beautiful Stranger. 30 Tree books to go.
  20. about half dozen of mine are massive doorstop size too.....but I'm not backing down
  21. Trying to spend as much time reading as possible. I arranged all my physical TBR books onto one set of shelves. Including the one I am reading now I have 31.
  22. Hmm quite harsh marking though Brian, 3 out of 5. I take your point about the limited character development , it is more of an ideas story than a character story.
  23. I finished a book of horror short stories, The Nightmare Chronicles by Douglas Clegg. It was good and totally out of my normal comfort zone. Not sure where I am now with my treebooks I will have to have another count up.
  24. Seen the first film, not interested in the books. My wife has hobbit feet though.
  25. I haven't seen the TV series and have no idea what the books are about. I do read fantasy, but I tend to like Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker, Conan the Barbarian type fantasies rather than anything with Orcs and Dwarves and Elves. So I was a bit on the fence whether to vote for choice 2 or 3 but in the end went for 3, as I will probably not get around to reading this series.
