  2. It's nearly 11 PM here and I'm eating a piece of mum's homemade birthday cake and drinking a beer, interesting combination.
  3. Goodness I haven't been on in a long time, but I have finished several books in my absence. Reviews for 2 of the books I finished below. I added all of the books finished to my entry above that I had already started a listed of finished books in. Enjoy! Book 1 (it is very long because I copy/pasted from my blog post): You know how certain people like something so much they can
  4. I need to do some research for something I am writing. I have been looking for books about 3 particular subjects. However, the books I do find don't have solid evidence that the books are good enough for me to bother with. Can anyone recommend titles for the following subjects? -Crimean War -A History of Wales -A book about eucalyptus Books with lots of information, but not so much that I get bogged down and bored with reading them.
  5. I was wondering if that was something that was present in the book. I've only watched 2 film adaptations and they both have this gothic theme to them. A bad foreboding, but nothing ever comes of it. The book isn't like that though? I may be more likely to pick it up and read it now....well it will join the ever growing TBR pile anyways.
  6. Finished a book today! I posted a more in depth entry on my blog (link in the signature), but here is part of it. I don't think I gave any spoilers... Today I finished Talyn by Holly Lisle. Have you read it? Go now, find a copy, read, and tell me is it not splendid?! I came across this book on LibraryThing. The cover intrigued me (of course), but I read very little about its plot. I immediately went to PaperBackSwap and procured my copy. I didn’t read it right away (damn library books ). I’m not always good with summaries, but this wouldn’t be a good review without one (at least I’m told). Talyn is a Shielder for the Confederacy taak Belytaak in Hyre. Her magical abilities and those of her fellow Shielders have helped wage war on the Republic of Eastil for the past 300 years. Suddenly outside people the Ba’Feegash are invoking and spreading peace throughout both sides of Hyre. Talyn finds herself having to play “nice” with the enemy, but are they the true enemy? Holly Lisle, and this no exaggeration, has crafted one of the best fantasy novels I’ve ever read. Her attention to detail is amazing. She created not one country, but several with different cultures, languages, people, and intricate histories. I kept reading and reading nearly convinced that this was a people that had lived at some unknown point in my past. The characters leapt off the page, it was very easy to see and feel what they were going through. Many of Talyn’s thoughts I nodded my head wanting to walk up to someone and say, “Yes! Do you see?”. One such time being with the following quote from the book, I posted it on my Facebook even: ‘Guilt is a good friend, isn't it? It will stand at your back when every other friend has abandoned you, and in the face of all reason it will stay by your side, and even when you tell it, "I am moving on now," it will say, "I shall never leave you; never." If only I could find a lover as faithful as guilt.' - Talyn by Holly Lisle page 42
  7. I don't think I could ever bring myself to be out and out mean to an author. Sometimes I worry about offending someone with my views of different things. I will think on it though. Thanks for the encouragement, Janet!
  8. That's a great recommendation. I just added it to my wishlist. The first books that come to mind that your friend might like would be Kristen Britain's Green Rider Series. Green Rider, First Rider's Call, The High King's Tomb and fingers crossed there may be a fourth book soon. Also she may enjoy Maria V. Snyder's Poison Study books. Poison Study, Magic Study, and Fire Study. I might even wager that she would like Secret Sacrament and Time of the Eagle by Sherryl Jordan. Although I believe they are consider young adult. I really enjoyed them. Oh and if I'm not suggesting too many at this point, anything by Patricia A. McKillip would be great. (sorry if this was too many )
  9. Not sure if I use my placeholder for this or not (if I should move it please let me know). This is my first time doing a reading list on a forum. The following are what I have read so far this year. I'm not sure if I am going to write any reviews for these. I suppose if I'm begged to I will, but some of things I have to say about them aren't very nice. - Evermore by Alyson Noel (landed between Skimmed for plot and Let me tell you about this book! on my reading scale) - Rampant by Diana Peterfreund (reading scale: Leave me alone, I'm reading) - Second Sight by Amanda Quick (reading scale: between Soon forgotten and Good for insomniacs) - Devil's Kiss by Sarwat Chadda (reading scale: Bound for the trash ) - Talyn by Holly Lisle (reading scale: Leave me alone, I'm reading) - Finished 25 Jan 2010 (review below) - Bittersweet Rain by Sandra Brown (reading scale: Bound for the trash, I basically picked it off the shelve at my bookstore b/c I didn't have another book with me at the time. Otherwise known as fluff read ) - Finished 26 Jan 2010 I should be reading Whitechapel Gods by S.M. Peters right now, but I sort of lost interest for the moment..... - The Forest Lord by Susan Krinard (reading scale: Skimmed for plot, I read because someone recommended it after I read Soulless by Gail Carriger.) Finished 1 Jan 2010 - Lady Ilena Way of the Warrior by Patricia Malone (reading scale: Skimmed for plot) Finished 2 Feb 2010 - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrow (reading scale: Leave me alone, I'm reading, Amazing!!!!!! I will now be adding the Guernsey Islands to my future travel plans) Finished 9 Feb 2010 - The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong (reading scale: Soon forgotten) Finished 9 Feb 2010 - Tempted by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast (reading scale: Soon forgotten) Finished 13 Feb 2010 - A Thief in The House of Memory by Tim Wynne Jones (landed between Skimmed for plot and Let me tell you about this book! on my reading scale, Also this is a book from my 2010 reading list, yeah for me!) Finished 17 Feb 2010 - According to Jane by Marilyn Brant (landed between Skimmed for plot and Let me tell you about this book! on my reading scale) Finished 22 Feb 2010 - Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader by Anne Fadiman (landed between Skimmed for plot and Let me tell you about this book! on my reading scale) Finished 23 Feb 2010
  10. Well I'm 21 , but I live at home and to be respectful I usually obey house rules (although it is not really a rule just her opinion). She has never read them, but hasn't heard anything positive about them. I'll probably ended up reading them only because they can't be much worse than the other vampire books I've read. She never liked those either really. My mom has always been open to me reading almost anything. Only certain books she has voiced her opinion about.
  11. This was actually how I received mine too. Well I guess I'll give it another go, but if the stories don't get better the book will be finding a new home. Probably not for a while though, I have too many other books to read that are more enticing at the moment.
  12. Last year a friend gave me 2 books for Christmas. One was Dreams Underfoot: The Newford Collection by Charles de Lint. I was really excited to get his book because I've never read anything by him. I've always heard he is an amazing author. Well... I read the first short story and I'm not feeling it. Boring. Confusing. Confusing. I feel guilty because I still haven't finished the collection. The book just sits on my shelf glaring at me saying, "Your friend is going to find out you haven't read me yet and then she is going to feel hurt that you didn't even try very hard to like me". Has anyone read this or de Lint's other books? Am I being too rough on him? Do I need to just suck it up and go on because the book gets better?
  13. A friend from work loaned me Rice's Vampire books in a box set. They've sat at work for a month or so now. I don't know how I'm going to read them when my mom thinks they're bad books and doesn't want them in her house. I've read other vampire books and don't see how they could be any worse. I think the friend will be asking for them back soon. I need to get around to reading them. If only I had a chauffeur to drive me to and from work then I could read during the half hour trip instead of focusing on driving. Or I could learn to multitask.
  14. I've long had difficulites writing reviews. Part of me wants to keep my opinions locked up inside like a secret treasure (something from Daniel Pennac's book Better Than Life comes to mind, but I can't remember it. I'll have to reread the book to remember it.). Another part of me wants to share them with others. I started writing reviews last year on my blog, however, I don't think they are as good as they could be. Does anyone have suggestions for writing good book reviews? Steps to follow?
  15. I just sent you a friend invite . When I discovered LibraryThing nearly 2 years ago I wanted to shout it from the roof tops I loved it so much. I still love LibraryThing, but still haven't shouted from the roof tops. Not quite sure how I'd make it to my roof. Maybe I should go for stopping random people on the streets and telling them about it.
  16. I read The Shape-Changer's Wife by Sharon Shinn and I was intrigued by her writing style and decided to get Archangel. It has been on my shelf for a long time and I decided it was time to be fair to it and put it on the list. I'll be sure to let you know. For a long time I wanted to read a biography about Wilde, but I was afraid that more modern writers would write more about his life than I cared to know. I was at an antique store and came across Oscar Wilde and The Yellow Nineties. It was published in 1941. I'm anxious to read it.
  17. Wishlist (books I want to read, but not sure I want to own yet): Beautiful Creatures by Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles Love's Shadow by Ada Leverson Nicholas A. Basbanes bibliophile series Fallen by Lauren Kate Boneshaker by Cherie Priest My Life in France by Alex Prud'homme and Julia Child Thirteenth Child by Patricia C. Wrede Jack Absolute by C. C. Humphreys Sea Change by Aimee Friedman The Good Thief by Hannah Tinti The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson
  18. I'm not one to follow a reading list normally. I just go to my shelves and pick out whatever strikes me first. However, I'm not good at that. I like buying new books and going to the library rather than reading what I already own. I thought creating a list on here, like others, might motivate me to follow it and read more of my books that I've owned for a long time. I may add to this list in the future. Some of the books are also on another of my personal lists, 25 to read before I'm 25. The * will indicate which books are on that list as well. 2010 Reading List: Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke The Gutenberg Elegies by Sven Birkerts Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen* (See BookJumper I promised ) The Mark of the Horse Lord by Rosemary Sutcliff Oscar Wilde and the Yellow Nineties by Frances Winwar Dracula by Bram Stoker* King, Kaiser, Tsar by Catherine Clay The Once and Future King by T.H. White* The Sea Rovers by Albert Marrin Stardust by Neil Gaiman Riddle-Master The Complete Trilogy in one book by Patricia McKillip A Thief in the House of Memory by Tim Wynne-Jones The Cage by Michael Weston Archangel by Sharon Shinn True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay The Magnificent Ambersons by Booth Tarkington Flesh and Spirit by Carol Berg* Dinotopia Lost by Alan Dean Foster Well I better go get busy!
  19. I read Wives and Daughters and adored it! I own the movie too. After reading Wives and Daughters I wanted to get my hands on other Gaskell books. I read North and South and then watched the movie. I did the same with Cranford and just finished the movie last night. While the movie took many liberties with the story, I really enjoyed it. Wives and Daughters was originally recommended to me by a friend saying if you like Jane Austen you'll like Elizabeth Gaskell. I like Gaskell far better than I've ever liked Austen. However, I find it true that not many people know about her. Everytime I talk about her people look at me like, who? I still have many of her books to read and I can't wait. There is another Cranford movie, but it hasn't come out in the states yet. I'm not sure what it is about seeing how the first one seemed finished.
  20. Well there are many US authors I could list, but I'm going to go for Indiana authors. Gene Stratton Porter (She's known for A Girl of the Limberlost, but I really enjoyed her book The Magic Garden.) Booth Tarkington (The Magnificent Ambersons) Favorite (overall) from the US though would have to be Louisa May Alcott.
  21. Vittorio E - Spoon In the Morning - Razorlight That's Entertainment - The Jam The Bomb - New Young Pony Club Learning to Breathe - Switchfoot Dancing Queen - Mamma Mia Cast Bennie and the Jets - Vitamin String Quartet Main Title - Mark Mancina (August Rush Soundtrack) Crazier - Taylor Swift Spirit In The Sky - Norman Greenbaum
