  1. Is this book anything like the film? Cause I did like the film, even though it wasn't really logical for me that Hannibal originated like this, I expected something different, maybe not so much a specific trauma to be at the base of his cannibalism. So I liked the film as a film, but not really as part of the Hannibal Lector films. I loved all the others, though Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon more than Hannibal.. though that one was a little more directed at gore than the others. I mean..

the scene where he feeds the guy his own brains? In a way I really liked that scene, but also I had the idea it was just created to get people sickened out.

I am always meaning to read these books, but I have only so far picked up Silence of the Lambs, and not gotten very far, because I wasn't in the mood for that one at the time.

I did like the film, and despite what people have to say, I like the actor that plays Hannibal, he's got that whole evil charm thing going, and I liked this film for giving insight into the brain and past of a psychopath, something I always found interesting.

So again, is the book like the film?

  2. ^I agree with you on Clash of the Titans, seems amazing.

I hated Iron Man, and Scarlet Johansson doesn't do it for me hee hee, now if it would be for example, Kate Beckinsale ;) (maybe that's why I like the Underworld films:tong:).

But no, not looking forward to Iron Man 2, won't be watching it.

  3. Am lucky I guess, I actually like the taste of water.. though honestly, it tastes differently here than it does in the UK, at least in Southampton. When I grab a glass of water there, it tastes sort of bad, compared to when I'm at home. So there is a difference.

  4. Well, I am not on any diet, though I am trying to cut down on sweets and snacks.. what I do eat is quite healthy, just have to watch how much I eat (which is not a problem these days, I used to eat too much, you know when you're full but still eat more because it tastes so good? Now, I eat till I am just full).

But the last year, when my dad was ill, our eating patterns were kind of strange, and stress always makes for more unhealthy eating patterns in my family, and mom's eating lots of sweets and chocolate.. when I cut down on those, I'll lose a little weight. Just the weight I gained in the last year.

In my opinion, I don't need to lose a lot, you can say I'm thin enough, but I just have this little bit of tummy fat I'd like to lose. I like my body better without that.. I'm currently like, size 10/12 I think? These UK sizes are weird, European (Dutch sizes) I am 36 or 38, Small or Medium. Anyway, I'm good with that, really, I won't do much to lose weight, but I'd like to lose about 5 to 10 pounds. So I'll just eat less stuff that's bad for me (or I'll try hee hee, sometimes I just am a sucker for chocolate) and pick up exercising again. We have a crosstrainer in our house, so it's not real effort really.. apart from that I am generally lazy.

However, I used to be about 30 pounds heavier.. I was living with my now ex, he worked a lot, I had this time where I quit university for a while and was generally feeling very bad.. so I ate. Only lost the weight again when my ex broke up with me, but getting your heart broken isn't a great way to lose weight, even if it's an effective one.

Oh and pipread, if you find it hard to cut eggs out of your diet, can't you just try egg whites? The cholesterol is in the yoke, and my dad had to be on a low cholesterol diet years back because of heart problems, and it was fine if he ate egg whites.. I like the yoke better too, but I guess egg white is better than no egg at all. :D

  5. I would step into the world of either the Kushiel's Dart, or the Imriel series, by Jacqueline Carey.. this world has sucked me in from the start, I love it.. is sort of a medieval Europe, but with an alternate history where the main god that is worshipped, has sprung into existence from the blood spilled by Jesus on the cross. His decree? "Love As Thou Wilt". And this is the main theme of these series. I love it, and I would love to visit Imriel. He stole my heart. :friends0:

  6. I have had a subscription to my local library for about 24 years now. I have always used it a lot, except for the last few years. They don't change the books they have a lot, and honestly, by now I have read a lot fo what I want to read. And most books I want to read, they don't have.. not even in a different library, you can request books easily, costs 50 cts, but who cares. But they often don't have what I want, especially not since I like reading my books in English, if that's the language they're originally written in. And the number of english books our library has is horrible. So few. Or you know, they're several hundred, but few in my opinion. :readingtwo:

Now, I just try getting books there if I am not sure I'll like the book.. then I won't buy it. Luckily they have a good website where you can check if they have the book or not.

  7. ^See I don't like staff asking if I'd like a basket, if I'd want one, I'd get one.. however if they ask me if I need help with something, I always just say "no thanks. I'm fine" or whatever. It's silly to sneak away from them, guess lots of people are afraid to ask for help, because I see it often enough that when staff asks, people have suddenly all kinds of questions.. silly really, why not ask for help if you need it?:readingtwo:

  8. Make love, not war!

    Boobies! (admit it, you blushed!).

Hee hee.. absolutely, my face is SO red right now.. Oh wait, no, I actually have a pair of those, so why would I blush. :readingtwo: The thing they say, that women can be worse than men, talking about sex.. can be so true.

  9. You know, the things I have heard about American Psycho make me really want to read it.. loved the film too.

Anyway, just realized that when I say pornography, I mean films. Books, no matter how graphically the sex acts are described, for me are not pornography. I know the definition says they can be, I am just stating my feelings. Why? Because for me, pornography is real sex. And films, that can be, but books is just not real.

Anyway my opinion on sex in books reflects my opinion on sex in daily life. I have no problems with it, an can be open about it, it's hard to embarrass me with anything related to sex. :readingtwo:

  10. I don't care for sex in books. I don't write it, either. I can't justify contributing the the addiction of pornography.

Pornography: ( as defined by Websters Dictionary )

1 : the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement

2 : material (as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement

3 : the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction

See, I do care for sex in books, then again I absolutely don't have a problem with pornography. Sex for me, is part of life, and we have films and books about violence, why not about sex? Admitted I can see a distinction in that the violence is not real and the sex in pornography is (in films at least).. but I'd rather watch pornography than say, one of those horrible films about torture that is so popular these days (Hostel, some Saw films etc).

    Sex over violence. :readingtwo:

  11. You should upload the pic to an image sharer, or whatever it's called. I'd say http://www.tinypic.com since it's easy and you don't need to register. Then, copy the link from the pic (you know, http://www.. etc), and when posting, click the little square (with the mountain) above the part where you can write your post, and in the screen you get there, paste your link. Make sure the pic isn't too big though..

Or, you can attach a picture.. click the paperclip above the posting area, under "upload file from your computer" click browse, upload the picture, and then again click the paperclip and you can add that picture.

    Wow, sounds complicated.

@Miltenburg, poor bookshelf, the shelves are all bent from the weight of the books hee hee. The middle three, or just does it look like that? But looks like a well-loved shelve, you even pay the books down flat so there'll fit more.. I hate doing that.

  12. I will try to overcome my computer retardation and post a pic...

Has that worked? Hmm. If they are there then sorry the quality is rubbish. Only have my phone at the moment.

I'm standing on my bed in the first photo by the way. Due to too many bookcases I couldn't get far enough away to take a photo if I didn't.

Not quite in the thousands yet. I think I have maybe 500-600. What must 5000 look like?!?!

I see a Tardis figure thingie.. and I see Sauron.. right? Coolness.

And Harry Potter books. Who doesn't have em.

  13. Well let me know if they do get any better I think i made it as far as number 10 but I know there may have been a couple after that by now..

Yeah, they're up to number 18 now, just came out yesterday. I'll buy that one when the price drops a little, call me crazy but I think 20-ish euros for a paperback is insane. :motz:But honestly, if you think by number 10 (Narcissus in Chains) it's bad, you really won't like the rest of the books so far. However, reading the blurb on the new book, seems she's getting back to her Necromancer thing, which is good.

Don't know who said this somewhere in this discussion, but as I don't mind when sex IS there, I can get annoyed at when it isn't.. not in all books, I mean if it's not needed for the book, if it's not about any form of romantic relationship, fine. But sometimes you read these books, where you get the feeling the author is trying really hard to avoid any mention of sex.. which in my opinion, is weird when the story is about two (or more) people that love eachother, feel attracted to eachother, but where there's barely hinted at sex. Feels like you're cutting out a normal, and in my opinion, very valuable piece of life. Feels like one of these films, where they do the "tasteful" fade-out whenever there's a sex scene coming.. one minute you see them kissing and the next, tadaa, cuddling. I don't need to see the whole thing (I wouldn't mind either to be honest) but something more than that, come on. :D

Anyway, feel the same about books.

  14. I have do say though i don't agree with the Laurell Hamilton take on sex in her books I did like the early Anita Blake books but then it just became the whole story so i stopped buying them.

Okay, I said I liked the Laurell Hamilton books but I have to agree with you on the later books, I like sex in books, but some of the later ones have just too much of that in it, not that it's too much sex by itself, and the sex doesn't always have to be necessary for the plot but when the plot suffers on the amount of sex, well yeah, that's when I object. And that's the case with the later books.. keep hoping the next one will go back a little bit to what they used to be so I keep buying them. :D

  15. Nope, no problem here. I'm a bonafide pervert and proud of it! :D

Ditto. I love sex in books. Actually I can miss in some.. although it doesn't always have to be described in detail, sometimes I do like that. I like Laurell Hamilton's books so yeah, you can't really if you hate sex in books.

  16. I very much wanted to read Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, but then I realized that I already know the plot and the plot twist - I think everyone does, by now, since the story has been retold in a hundred different mediums - so I didn't think there would be much left for me to enjoy...

See, I don't agree with people thinking like this. If this would be the case, one would rarely ever re-read a book. The story has been told a million times, and for that reason alone, this book IS worth reading. To see what the original story is like, not the changes and interpretations all those other mediums you talk about have made. This is one of the stories I have read, because I wanted to see what the original was like.. and I did like it, wasn't quite what I expected, I think I thought it would be more horrific, but it was just slightly creepy. Plus, it was quite short, not a bad thing necessarily though. Think I might want to go do a re-read some day, because it's been years since I have read this one and am a little hazy about what I exactly thought of it. :D

  17. ^And that, is exactly why I love reading those classic stories everyone knows of, but which not many people (apart from book geeks like us) have read for themselves. Everyone knows Dracula.. from films, stories etc, but when you ask around there's barely anyone who has read the book. :D
