  1. As for the cold calls, I found that politicians did not feel the need to adhere to the law. During the elections our phone was ringing off the hook with calls from Republicans,Democrats and Others reminding us to vote. What gave them the right to disregard our request to not get solicitation calls?

  2. A 2006 Nissan Pathfinder SUV silver gray with the luggage rack on top, CD player, seats 7. Its gorgeous and I look good driving it!:giggle2: We've been Nissan lovers for decades. Hubby drives a Ford F150 pickup that he purchased from work when our little Nissan pickup gave up the ghost. Up till then we had a Nissan Altima which our second daughter wrecked, then she totaled our Dodge Grand Caravan minivan. It was NOT a good year for her.

I digress, we have no public transport and a small low to the ground car just wont do for me. I need to be UP!

  3. Even though I should be studying for my finals, I have succumbed to a book just SCREAMING to be :readingtwo:! The Sherlocian by Graham Moore is just the delectable dreary, cold Sunday afternoon mystery read. I love how Moore goes back to 1900 England and then travels to the present.

I'm not a great review writer so I'll keep it brief. Arthur Conan Doyle hates his creation Sherlock Holmes and as we know kills him off at one point, then 10 years later, he is brought back (found by Watson). The mystery is that we never knew WHY he chose to bring him back. The secret is supposedly found in Doyle's last diary that turns up missing.

A large international Sherlockian group has searched for decades but no clue until a prominent member says he found the diary, he turns up dead and its up to Harold (the protagonist) to find the murderer. He travels between New York and England to search for clues.

    Murder is afoot....

  4. pixie, I hate cold calls with a passion! I signed us up for the "do not call" list and it worked pretty well except for the occasional pushy "bill" collector who had no leg to stand on. Then there was the bill collector who would place 10 calls a day. Excuse me, this will NOT cause you to get paid faster and I can do with less stress in my life, thankyeverymuch.... When we disconnected the landline the only nonfamily member with our cell number are the daycare, high school, job, doctors offices and mortgage company. Everyone else will have to write!

Even at home I was not one to talk too much. I mean, I would look at the phone ringing and have to decided whether to answer or not. If I answered, it was out of obligation and not because I really wanted to talk. If I have a desire to talk, I call. I'm just not that chatty! I will speak longest to my mom and one close friend. The rest are quick conversations with the kids and hubby.

I can't STAND how rude people are on the phone! I have had to tell people coming into my bookstore to tone it down, especially when they are loudly using foul language. If you come to my counter for checkout while on the phone, you get bare bones customer service, no greeting, money on the counter and then I turn my back to do something else or warmly greet the next customer. Trust me, they notice the difference!

Anyway, we decided we were only paying for a phone service that we didnt use or was constantly dodging. I didnt like checking voice mail either always bad news. Why pay for fielding calls?

The best news? No more family ringing the house phone asking my hubby to do things:mrgreen: ! Funny they can call the land line all day long but can't be bothered to call the cell... go figure!

  5. Interesting about Mary and Elizabeth. Elizabeth was by far the best monarch because she ruled with her hea. Mary wa an emotional nitwit by all accounts. Mary did produce an heir, he became King James (KJV bible) and Elizabeth's successor. Mary tried 3 different times to have Elizabeth disposed, hence, off with her head. Elizabeth had opportunity to marry but she refused to be forced into it by Parilment. She would, if God led her to, marry with her heart and her head. In the end, Elizabeth would be under submission to NO man.

  6. Funny should mention the leash laws. I watched Judge Judy Friday and there was an episode where a guy had the NERVE to sue his neighbors boyfriend for beating his dog. But get this, the dog (pit bull) got out of the house and ran for the neighbors dog while the dog was in its yard. It killed the dog and bit the neighbors boyfriend! No remorse, no common sense AND this dog is a repeat biter. In all honesty, I would have shot it and would have been within my rights to do it. He, the idiot, thought it was being hit excessively...?! Of course, he lost.

  7. I couldnt bring myself to like Snape even after his "big reveal". I mean, the guy was twisted. He's so in love with Lily that he treats her only child the way he did? It was more of an obsession than love. He was abusive and nasty and he needed a mental evaluation done! Its almost as if he hated Harry with the same energy that he "loved" Lily and I'll be darn if I'd turn around and name one of my pets, much less a child of mine after him!

  8. Hello all!

I'm working on three papers for school. One is about St. Patrick and his conversion of the Irish to Christianity. The other paper is about Queen Elizabeth. I am searching for resources (peer reviewed, journals, etc) about the queen's challenges as the Queen Monarch and a woman (if she sacrificed her, ie. love, marriage, children). The battles she fought to be taken seriously, etc. And the last one is on the influence of invented words from HP series into the mainstream.

Crazy subjects and I'm going crazy searching for the resources for these subjects. What I wanted to know is if any of you have some suggestions for books, journals and articles that would be helpful? I've used my university's library site but its just frustrating me because I can't seem to find the right key words to do a search that doesnt generate 2,900 responses!

Any help would be truly appreciated! And if my questions are too scattered, feel free to ask me a more direct question!

  9. One of my favorite subjects also as I delve into my family history! For some fictional reading I would also suggest Louise Eldrich. She wrote such books as Plague of Doves, The Painted Drum and Love Medicine to name a few. Excellent books! Also, you can't go wrong with Sherman Alexie! My favorite of his is The Absolutely True Tales of a Part-time Indian! This book makes you laugh out loud and ache with pain. Highly recommend it!
