Would your favorite character like you?
AbielleRose replied to Katrina1968's topic in General Book Discussions
I the only character I have ever found who I could honestly say I related to the most was in a book called Echos by Robin Jones Gunn. Her name was Lauren and everything from her personality, her fears, her reservations and her weird luck fit me to a T. She is even a huge Brownings enthusiast like myself I think if we met in person we would get along great. -

How are you liking the From Dante to Dickens book? I am thinking about looking into getting it for myself I've been facinated with the Brownings for years. In college, about (holy cow!) 6 years ago now I took an advanced Women in Literature course that introduced me to a lot of feminism in books. One of our projects was to write about a favorite female poet. At that time, all I could think of was Emily Dickenson and, although she is okay, I've never been a huge fan of her work. I bought The Sonnets from the Portuguese (if you didn't know, the Portuguese was Robert's nickname for Elizabeth) and fell in love with Elizabeth's passion. I studied her background and everything for that project and fell in love with Robert through her. Everything from their home in Italy (Casa Guidi) to their simple, yet extreme romance (falling in love through letters in the 1800's) became so magical to me. I own Elizabeth's complete works and my copy was printed in 1886. Amazingly enough, it was the only one of my antique books to survive the flood because I take it with me almost everywhere. Another favorite of mine that you might like is: Life and Love Fast this Life of mine was dying, Blind already, and calm as death, Snowflakes on her bosom lying Scarcely heaving with her breath Love came by, and having known her In a dream of fabled lands, Gently stooped, and laid upon her Mystic chrism of holy hands; Drew his smile across her folded Eyelids, as the swallow dips; Breathed as finely as the cold did, Through the locking of her lips. So, when Life looked upward, being Warmed and breathed on from above, What sight could she have for seeing, Evermore...but only Love? (If you can't tell... Yes, I just typed that from the book I pulled out of my purse .) Sorry for the long post! I'm just very passionate about the Brownings. That's so sweet Frankie! Both about the post-its and the squirrel You two are so cute!

I completely agree. In a way, the distance makes one's bond stronger, but only if both are committed to it. I really hope he enjoys the poems. Sometimes our feelings are best expressed through other's words. (Sorry for the thread hyjack frankie!)

Aww! That is such a sweet gesture, catwoman!!! Very romantic. I hope he enjoys it. Both Elizabeth and Robert Browning are two of the most passionate people I've ever come across (through books). Their personal love story is so beautiful and inspiring. They actually fell in love through each other's writing. They wrote poems and letters and knew each other's heart before ever meeting in person. If I remember right, one was in England and one was in Italy. In a way, they sound a bit like you and your OH, love from afar.

It is my favorite poem What I love even more is that it was in a pile of papers that one day she slipped into her husband, Robert Browning's hands and instructed him to read after she left. She then instructed him to burn them because she was a painfully shy person. To think, if he had listened and burned that... Thank god he didn't!

She is a great one to 'jump into' poetry with. I whole heartedly approve! Could this be the one you like: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. I love thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. I love thee with a passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. Aside from her short novel, Aurora Leigh, this is her most famous work. I really hope you like her!

I read a few more pages in Gone with the Wind but for some reason I just couldn't get into the story today. All I can think about are other things that need to be done every time I sit down to read. I just can't enjoy it. Guess we'll try again tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to make a real dent.

A lady goes to her priest one day and tells him, 'Father, I have a problem. I have two female parrots, But they only know how to say one thing.' 'What do they say?' the priest inquired. They say, 'Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?' That's obscene!' the priest exclaimed, Then he thought for a moment. 'You know,' he said, 'I may have a solution to your problem. I have two male talking parrots, Which I have taught to pray and read the Bible. Bring your two parrots over to my house, And we'll put them in the cage with Francis and Peter. My parrots can teach your parrots to praise and worship, And your parrots are sure to stop saying . . That phrase . . In no time.' Thank you,' the woman responded, 'this may very well be the solution.' The next day, She brought her female parrots to the priest's house. As he ushered her in, She saw that his two male parrots Were inside their cage holding rosary beads and praying. Impressed, She walked over and placed her parrots in with them. After a few minutes, The female parrots cried out in unison: Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?' There was stunned silence. Shocked, One male parrot looked over at the other male parrot And exclaimed, 'Put the beads away, Frank. Our prayers have been answered!'
