  1. :tong: I'm so glad you enjoyed this catwoman! Could we have another budding Dexterette to join our social group?? :D

I do agree with you about the gory detailing, but I think you'll find in the second book (the best of the series IMO) the gore factor is stepped up a notch and there is a lot more humour too. As you say the technical jargon is less than most crime books but for a light quick read, I think they're brilliant :D

Yes I might add myself to the socail group. I have just wrote down the other book titles in my little black wishlist book. Once I have goen trhough my library books and dented my TBR pile I think I will be reading the next one. especially if there is a little more detailing.

    Thanks again Charm

  2. On a halted and swinging Gondola cable car thingy at the Nevis Range, Fort William in Scotland. I had taken in the views, and felt myself getting a little anxious so I whipped out my book and read for a short while.

I bet that was a lovely view! Sounds a perfect place to read.

I can usually read anywhere so I think the most strangest must have been when I was reading on the bus and getting really into the book that I didn't want to stop, so I er..carried on reading when I got off the bus and was walking home

Haha! :D I have done that before. Only once. I decided to walk the long way back home afterwards and it decided to pour down with rain. I learnt my lesson :tong:

  3. I am sorry if this has already been made into a thread, but I did do a search and i could not see anything  So sorry if there has been.

My tyre got a puncture yesterday on the M25. So while waiting for the RAC man to come I decided to read my book while I was waiting behind the barrier. This got me thinking....

Where is strangest place you have read to?

*Sorry again about my poor grammer.*

  4. Ok finally back from the hols and did not manage to get much reading done :D

I did however manage to finish Darkly Dreaming Dexter. So, here is my review.

Book # 2 - Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay

I was recommended this by Charm. Thanks charm

    From Waterstones Website

Dexter Morgan isn't exactly the kind of man you'd bring home to your mum. At heart, he's the perfect gentleman: he has a shy girlfriend, and seems to lead a quiet, normal life bordering on the mundane. Despite the fact that he can't stand the sight of blood, he works as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. But Dexter also has a secret hobby: he is an accomplished serial killer. So far, he's killed 36 people and has never been caught because he knows exactly how to hide the evidence. And while that may lead some people to assume he's not such a nice guy, he tempers his insatiable hunger for brutality by only killing the bad guys. However, Dexter's well-organised life is suddenly disrupted when a second, much more visible serial killer appears in Miami. Intrigued that the other killer favours a style similar to his own, Dexter soon realises that the mysterious new arrival is not simply invading his turf but offering him a direct invitation to 'come out and play'...

To be honest I was a little worried I would not be able to shake off the actor who plays Dexter out of my head. I aam not a big fan of the show and this was something I thought might ruin the book for me. But instantly I had my own image of dexter. For some reason Simon Baker (The mentalist) was my Dexter. So me not liking the show was not a problem and I was able to read the book without any missconceptions. I also think because I had only watched a couple episodes I had no pre concieved ideas of what was going to happen or how charactors should be.

It is a short book in comparison to other books. But this does not mean that it has left out important factors or detail. Ok it is not incredibly detailed, which for me is not a bad thing. It does not go into graphic detail of each murder. But the Dialoge is amazing and gives you enough atmosphere to have a firmly planted image in your head. The charactor of Dexter is charactorised really well. Also I found Debs to be a great character. I have been told by a friend that on the TV show other characters are more prominant than what they are in the first book.

Overall this is a fantastic quick paced book, that brings a different type of book for all us crime fantatics. With the quick pace and the humour it is a must for anyone who wants a quick a light read.

But for fans of detailed novels and who like the indepth detail of crime scenes and medical techincal details it may not be for you.

It is highly recommended from me and there are a lot of fans on this forum. I will be looking out for the next novels.

    9/10

Thanks for the people who recommended it.

  5. Back from my holiday and did not manage to get much reading. But i did manage to finish Darkly dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. It took longer than normal due to being away on a family holiday and not really having the chance to read while I was away. The only time I was able to read more than two pages was when my tyre got a flat on the M25 and I had to wait for the RAC man behind the crash barrier.

I am now reading Genisis by Karin Slaughter. This book has a lot to live up to. I have high expectations and wants. So lets hope it lives up to it.

  6. Careful frankie and catwoman, you're makin me blush! :)

Soooo glad you're enjoying Dexter catwoman, he's brilliant! That was a great review too, I enjoyed that Kathy Reich as well :) Keep up the good work! :motz:

Awe thanks! yeah I managed to sneek in another 20 pages last night and I really do love it. can't wait to finish it off.

Hi there. I have both Kathy Reichs books and the Dexter books to read - I picked up a bunch of Reichs' books for a pound in a charity shop, but bought the job lot of the Dexter books from Waterstone's due to the high praise he gets on this forum.

Hope you're well, Catwoman. Great review, mate.

Thanks mate! You are lucky to get a bundle of Reich's books that cheap. I have only been able to find one of hers in a charity shop. But will be looking for more.

Love avatar pic. Nothing better than a picture of a live gig!

Happy reading everyone and thanks to ALL of you for your nice comments!

  7. Hiya Catwoman,

great to see you're writing your own bookblog! I'll be definitely popping in to see what you've been reading. I'm so glad you enjoyed Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs, I think you'll enjoy the other Tempe Brennan books. I'm not sure but I think we had that conversation about Reichs's books and they being the base for the show. If I remember correctly you hadn't heard about Kathy Reichs before joining the forum?

I'm glad Charm's persuaded you to read Darkly Dreaming Dexter and I noticed from the Book Activity Thread that you're really enjoying the book! It's nice to have new Dexter lovers around Be sure to read the other books as well

Keep up the good work, your review on Deja Dead was great!

No I had not heard of her. I definately did not know she inspired bones. i willl be reading more

Yeah Charm like many of the other books that I have on my wish list I have been recommended by Charm. I am half way through as my youngest was ill last night and all day I have been packing and finally got my hair done. So I have not read a SINGLE PAGE!!!! But I do love it! I have watched a couple of the TV episodes and did not like it much. but I think that is for me the choice of the actor for Dexter. I have my own dexter in my head ( I have simon Baker - The man as the Mentalist as mine) and this is what is making the books so good. I actaully laugh out loud it is sooo good! I will make sure that I read the other books :motz:

thank you for your kind words. :) I hope you like my next reviews. Hopefully I will have some more when I come back from my holiday, more like a short break.

    Absolutely, thouroughly agree!:D

I have also read the first Dexter, and loved it, but have stopped myself from buying the others just yet. I have too many books to get through at the moment and I want to pace myself a little!

Thanks chrissy for your kind words also :). I know what you mean about the amount of books to get through. It is too damn easy to reserve books from my library online.

  8. Kathy Reichs, yeah. She's a good one. I have most of her books. Let me know if you have trouble getting hold of any. :tong:

    Thanks Chrissy!

Once I am back from my hols I am going to go and seeif I can get the next one from the library. I also have one of latest ones on my TBR pile.

    :D

  9. Ok now I noticed how awesome people's threads are and a place where I get great book recommendations to go in my little black wishlist book.

So I decided to give it a go, even though my grammer sucks and I can't review very well, but hopefully you guys might spot a book that you like and it gives you as many hours of pleasure as it did for me.

Start of Reading list: 28th August 2009

Book #1 Deja dead by Kathy Reichs

I was recommended this author by someone on the forum (sorry I forgot who :D!) and they said it was from the person who inspired the BONES TV series. Even though I had only watched a few I really liked the storylines so I knew this had to be a must.

It was from my local library and was the follow on read to Patricia Cornwell's Postmortem. This I felt worked well as there has been many conparisons to the two authors.

    From the Waterstones website.

    Synopsis

The #1 Bestseller That Introduces Kathy Reichs' Acclaimed Heroine: Forensic Anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan In the year since Temperance Brennan left behind a shaky marriage in North Carolina, work has often preempted her weekend plans to explore Quebec. When a female corpse is discovered meticulously dismembered and stashed in garbage bags, Tempe detects an alarming pattern -- and she plunges into a harrowing search for a killer in the city's winding streets. But her investigation is about to place those closest to her -- her best friend and her own daughter -- in mortal danger....

This is the first book in the Dr Temperance Brennan Series.

When I started this book I noticed that the charactors especially Temps were nothing like the show. If you are a HUGE fan of the series. It will take a while to adapt to the book and change your perception of the charactor. It took me a good 100 pages to fully get her out of my mind.

This aside. I found the book to be quick paced with many twists and turns. There are many sub plots to the book and many charactors to become aquainted with. I find Temp a far more indepth charactor someone who I was able to feel for and have feeligs for. With Cornwell's Scapetta I really did not care. I also liked the character Ryan and hope that he is in future Tempe books.

The last 200 pages flew by and I could not put it down. I found the forensic depth fantastic and gave me a real insight and mental image of the crimes.

Bad points. It is a fairly long book for this type of genre, with some scenes having a bit too much detailing and some of Tempe's 'thinking' dialouge kind of went over my head. But overall I was still impressed.

If you like Cornwell's style and love a good detective/crime genre then this is a must.

I am already looking forward to reading the next one!

    9/10

(I hope the review was ok!)

    NCIS

    The West Wing

    The A Team

    CSI

    Miami Vice

    Roseanne

    The Sopranos

I love the theme tune to CSI.. I always sing along, :tong:

Some I love that I can remember off the top of my head are:

    The Addams family

    Trap door

    Pinky and the Brain (cartoon)

    Black books

    Firefly

    Stargate Atlantis

    Xena

    The Munsters

    Charmed - the smiths song

    Roswell - dido's song

    The Pink Panther (cartoon)

    Xmen (original cartoon)

I could go on and on and on :D

edit: I love the ending of the farscape opening

So many good ones there. I love farscape theme tune!

I also love the Ducktales themetune.

  11. I agree with previous posters. My TBR pile is just that, a pile of books that I have accumilated. Some are random pickups from chairty shops or sales at waterstones at bargain prices. I see it i get it. I know I want to read it and it is there when I can get to it.

I also have another pile ( A small pile) beside my bed of books that I need to read urgently because they are borrowed from a friend or are from the library.

My wish list or should I say 'Wish book' is exactly that. They are books that I am wanting to read but have not yet aquired. I have them all wrote down in a little black book and is always in my bag, so if I go to a charity shop/ second hand book shop or waterstones I can get it out and see if any of them are on offer or there to buy. My wish book only had a few book in it, now thanks to this site is is nearly full :D

  12. Hurrah for Tuffers!

    Oh no!

Absolutely love Strictly Come Dancing, also looking forward to watching Tuffers.

Anton is one of my favourites as well :friends0:

Oh no! I think I might be the only person who can not stand him  he annoys me, and just ... Urgh... Grinds my gears :D

I hope he wil change my mind when he dances.

  13. Camilla announced she was leaving earlier this year. I think she decided to quit while she was ahead, and leave on a high after winning last year. Maybe she had an inkling that changes were afoot and she wanted to leave on her own terms rather than not be asked back like Arlene, Karen and Hayley.

    Oh thats good :friends0:

Hayley was the NZ dancer right? (Hopes I have that right.) If it is I did not like her routenes I think if mark had someone better I think he could have got a bit further. All she did was make him stomp from one end of the dance floor to the other.

I have just been on the BEEB's website and looked at the celebs and who they are and there are a couple 'know' or seen on adverts etc, and I have a little more like towards them.

A few Eye candy for the ladies :D *wink wink*

I still don't know a couple of the people as they are in Hollyoaks etc. But one of the guys looks very nice and could well be my fav hehe.

*Starts to get all excited and jumps up and down*

  14. The couples are:

I'm a bit disappointed Lilia hasn't got someone younger, as she's had a couple of years without a shot at a final, and I don't hold out much hope for Richard Dunwoody, and I'm glad Anton's got a youngster for a change, but apart from that, no-one particularly stands out for me.

Don't know why, but this year looks more promising than last year for some reason, although I'm gonna miss Karen, but at least she and Camilla are going to be giving their opinions on It Takes Two.

OMG!!! I did not notice that?! Why is Camilla not in it???

  15. Dying Light ~by~ Stuart Macbride

    Synopsis Courtesy of Waterstone's

It's summertime in the Granite city: the sun is shining, the sky is blue, and people are dying! It starts with Rosie Williams, a prostitute, stripped naked and beaten to death down by the docks - the heart of Aberdeen's red light district. For DS Logan McRae it's a bad start to another bad day. Only a few short months ago, he was the golden boy of Grampian police. But one botched raid later, he's palmed off on a DI everyone knows is a jinx, waiting for the axe to fall with all the other rejects in the 'Screw-up Squad'. Logan's not going to take it lying down. He's determined to escape DI Steel and her unconventional methods, and the best way to do that is to crack the case in double-quick time. But, Rosie Williams won't be the only one making an unscheduled trip to the morgue. Across the city, six people are burning to death in a petrol-soaked squat, the doors and windows screwed shut from the outside. And despite Logan's best efforts, it's not long before another prostitute turns up on the slab!

    My thoughts:

This is the sequel to Cold Granite and even better. DS Logan McRea has been assigned to DI Steel's 'screw-up squad', after a botched raid he orchestrated left an officer in a coma. With a DI working him hard and a Chief Inspector out to get him, he sets out to prove himself and work his way out of his predicament. This proves to be easier said than done, as a serial killer is enjoying his pastime a little too much and adding bodies to the morgue on a regular basis. There also happens to be a criminal boss from another city trying to set up business on Logan's patch and he's not to be messed with ...

I love the fact that this series is set in Scotland, it makes it very easy to picture in my mind and the author does an excellent job of setting a scene, although it's mid-summer, with sun! Somewhat harder to picture in Aberdeen :D

This book is another gritty read from MacBride, even more gruesome than the first but with just as much dark humour. I loved the intertwining stories and the author's depiction of the main character makes him both interesting and likeable. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to getting the next in the series.

If I were to compare him to another author, it would be Richard Montanari, if you liked his 'Rosary Girls' series then I think you will like this.

    9/10

Yet another recommendation by you that I like the sound of and I have reserved a copy at my my library.

    THANKS CHARM!!

Hopefully one day I wil do the same for you .

  16. Mmm... Can't say I'm that impressed, but I'm sure I'll pick someone to root for. I hope Anton gets someone decent too, he always seems to get a no-hoper.

The girl who danced with John Sargeant was Christina I think. I quite liked her too, but I couldn't warm to Hayley, who will not be in it this year.

:D I totally agree. I am sure there will be someone. I was hoping Adrian Chiles would be in it :friends0:

Oh well. Maybe i will root for Rav... For obvious reasons .

  17. I can't stand Brendan, he's an arrogant little . And I don't like Brian either (sorry!).

I like Darren, Lilia, Flavia and Vincent (he makes me laugh).

No need to say sorry I love that people have their favs! I don't like Vincent! he annoys me!:D

I have Lilias work out DVD Pretty good. I like Darren too. I liked the woman who had Jon Sargent last year (Has mental block and can't remember her name.) I hope she will have an amazing dancer this year I think her cherography could be amazing. The same with Brian and his crazy flying feet!!

Oh and I adore (again anotehr mental block) The guy who had Christine last year. he is soo sweet!

  18. Rumours are that Anton is getting a youngster this time, and that Linda Bellingham is with Darren Bennett, but again, just speculation and rumour!

Lets hope! Every year he gets someone who is not quite as good as the rest. i would like him to have someone good. I would also like to see Brian more this year. I love his accent. His voice reminds me of my partner so much, and he has such a way with words hehe.

I don't want Brendan to get too far. He always annoys me. Especially at the end of the last series. I wanted to slap him with a wet kipper!

  19. I think she was in Footballers Wives with Zoe Lucker (I don't generally watch much drama or any soaps on television, so I have to rely on what other people have told me!)

That sucks!!! Thanks for the info Chesilbeach.

I agree with Mia I am not that impressed with the lineup this year. Even though I am glad that Adrian Chiles is in it!!!! Whooo Hooo.

I was hoping for a Sharon Osbourne/ Anton partnership I think that could have been quite funny.

I bet Anton will end up with Linda Bellingham. Bless him.

  20. Chris Hollins - BBC Breakfast presenter

Rav Wilding - Former policeman, think he might do Crimewatch and also does The ONE show occasionally

    Ricky Whittle - Hollyoaks actor?

Ali Bastion - The Bill actress?

Jade Johnson - Olympic long jumper

Jo Wood - Ronnie Wood's (Rolling Stones) ex-wife?

Apparently Joe Calzaghe has now denied involvement, claims he was joking with his dad.

oh so I was right about Rav but I was wrong about Jade. Oh thats a shame I thought she would have been good.

If that is the case I am slightly dissapointed with the celebs I thought there would have been a few more stars.

Any ideas who this is???......Laila Rouass
