I really enjoyed Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and I'm loving Half-Blood Prince too
These ones feel more grown up.
Yes, they get much better towards the end. I think JK forgot she was writing children's books
Half Blood Prince is my favourite of the series
I hope you enjoy it.
I had a bit of a book haul today and bought:*The Other Boleyn Girl - Philippa Gregory
*Dracula - Bram Stoker
*The Accidental Time Traveller - Sharon Griffiths
*Queen of the Damned - Anne Rice
*Class - Jane Beaton.
They were only

Thank-you. Re-reading my last text, it comes across a bit maudlin. It wasn't my intention to put in a "thread-stopper" comment!
So I'll start the ball rolling again. What other Du Maurier can anyone recommend to me. I'd really like to read "The Birds", which I understand is a short story, but I'd like to pick up a full size novel too.
Ian
I have only read Rebecca, Jamaica Inn and My Cousin Rachel. Each one is different in some ways but I have all of her books on my reading list
-
I bought "Frenchman's Creek" by Daphne du Maurier.
I love Daphne Du Maurier and haven't read that one. Would love to know what you think of it when you get to it
I bought The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks today and I can't wait to read itI need to finish Harry Potter first though
The Notebook is BRILLIANT
Finished The Hundredth Man and now starting The Lost book of Salem.I hope you like lost book of salem
its great.
I finished The Lost Book of Salem today. It was FANTASTIC! Very very good indeed
I started reading The Pact by Jodi Picoult AND I got The Art of Racing In The Rain

Those books are absolutely beautiful
I like the Shakespeare one
I've just registered here, and this place sure looks exciting!I've just started reading Charles Dicken's Oliver Twist. Anybody have any opinions on that book?
Hello and welcome to the forum
Oliver Twist is a fantastic book. I don't think I have ever wanted a character to succeed as much as I did little Oliver
-
How about the books by Barbara Taylor Bradford? They are about a woman called Emma Hart who builds an empire for herself. There are several books that span over several generations. I absolutely loved them. The first one is called A Woman of Substance

So glad you are enjoying this one, MuggleMagic! Have you met Sam yet? I would love to know someone like him
.
I'm trying to gather my thoughts on The Bone Garden and put them to screen
. It's been a hectic week and it's only Tuesday! I'm also trying to decide what I'm in the mood to read next...
Yes, Sam is luffly
I really like books that distract from the action a little bit by putting stuff like that in... something normal. Makes me feel a little closer to the characters if that makes sense
Glad you are enjoying this. It has finally prompted me to order The Heretic's Daughter today so by the time I've finished my present book "The Coffin Trail" by Martin Edwards, I should be ready for Heretic's daughter. I just love that period in American History.I have Heretic's Daughter on my reading list
I also find this part of American History interesting but (until now) have never found an interesting book about it
-
Those books sounds good. Breaking Dawn = Breaking a Yawn
On a seperate note - I have a desire to read all of the Harry Potter books again so I am going to read them after The Lost Book of Salem
The Lost Book of Salem is brilliant. Just about halfway through now
:eek2:

I watched the first two episodes of this last night after my friend recommended it and I thought it was really good! It's such an interesting idea (although I have to say I'm already preparing myself for an unsatisfactory ending!)
I also thought Mr Joseph Fiennes was rather lovely :eek2:
It was one of those programmes that really got me thinking, so question for you all, if you had the opportunity to see 6 months into your future, would you take it, even if you had the possibility of changing it? I'm undecided.....
No, I wouldn't want to know
The very end of the second episode gave me goosebumps :s
-
I have heard a lot of bad things about this novel but I am going to read it (when my library gets it in) with an open mind. Time Traveller's was such a good book... it would be hard to come up with something as good as that.
-
I wouldn't worry, the original film is quite subtle; there is only one scene which scared me (
the one where you learn what happens to Eli if she goes into someone's house without being invited in first
), for the rest it was just a good story well told.
Yes, I agree with that. The film isn't too bad. I loved the bit you have highlighted BookJumper. I was really looking forward to how they showed it :eek2:

this is one rule that i did not particularly like. Forums are meant for discussions and helping each other out. I think we can help the guy with the homework since he is here with a problem. Members can actually collaborate to put forth a solution. I think this will make this forum healthier..
I agree but since the member has only made one post and doesn't appear to have returned it would seem that they only joined for help with their studies.
I don't think anybody has problems with study related threads but I think the rule is there to stop people joining, posting one thread and then leaving.

I am going to be reading the Lost Book of salem soon, so look forward to reading your review.
Going to twatch the XtraFactor. I still can't believe I am liking the show as much as I am. I am then going to get some reading done.
I have only read the first chapter but I am loving it already. You know that feeling when you just know a book is going to be brilliant
I forgot to say before that I got Homecoming by Bernhard Schlink at the Oxfam shop on Saturday. Has been on my reading list for a while :eek2:

Finished The White Queen by Philippa Gregory and am going to start The Lost Book of Salem tomorrow
I hardly read at the weekends
-
The White Queen tells the story of Elizabeth Woodville as she goes from a common woman and rises to the greatest position of all; Queen of England and then fights for the rights of her children. She is the Mother of the Princes in the Tower, the little boys that went missing and were never seen again. Their bodies were never found and the mystery of what happened to them still baffles historians to this day.
I feel like Philippa Gregory lost it a little bit with The Other Queen and The Boleyn Inheritance but she is back on top form with The White Queen.
I know nothing about The War of the Roses and yet again Philippa Gregory provided me with an interesting and fun way of learning.
It really is brillaint. I cannot wait for the next one to come out

It was my Dad that got me back into reading Du Maurier. He lent me The house on the strand, having previously only known her "romantic" novels. I read Rule Britannia just after he died, and one of biggest regrets is not having him around to talk too after I finished it. I loved it, and don't even know if he'd read it himself.
Ian
I'm sorry to hear that

I am now about half way through The White Queen by Philippa Gregory. I feel that she 'lost it' a little with The Boleyn Inheritance and The Other Queen but is really back on top form with this book
I am absolutely loving it
-
I know how you feel!! My son is a Harry Potter fan and talks all things potter and I find it frustrating I don't have a clue what a Grifindor is (I know now... finally
) Anyway, so I have had more of a urge to read them and I will at some point.
As for me I have finished Living Dead in Dallas, and I am now reading Dexter in the dark and I am 70 pages in. I am liking it so far.
I have found though my last few books have not gripped me. I am not sure if that is because I have been ill and I have lost my Mojo or that I have not liked the books as much as I thought I would
I am nuts about Harry Potter. The first few books are a little childish but they really pick up around book three
You should read them and then you will know who Gryffindor is, who Hufflepuff is and Slyverin and Ravenclaw
-
my boyfriend is a really into gadgets but I don't think an ereader could ever replace that feeling of holding a book and knowing you are really going to enjoy it. Turning the pages and... the smell of a brand new book!
-
ohno! I tried reading Dead Until Dark this morning but... I gave up because I didn't like the way that it was written
I have started reading The White Queen by Philippa Gregory instead and I got The Lost Book of Salem out of the library. The library told me that they didn't have a copy and there it was when I went in!!!!
-
Wow, my first post
Just started reading Interview with the Vampire, tried reading it when I was 15 but never got through it, enjoying it so far though.

that is a fantastic book
-
I have Jamaica Inn on my next to be read list! I recently discovered her work too, I finished Rebecca a while ago and loved it.
I'd love to know what you think of it
I finished it on Saturday and loved it.
-
I finished Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier on Saturday and really really enjoyed it. I am going to start Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris tomorrow. Can't wait
