  1. I received my book order this morning, books for my children and for me one of my favorite books ever: 'To the Lighthouse' by Virginia Woolf. I've only read it in Dutch once, looking forward to reading the original words by the author in her native language. I'm still expecting one more book from that order, it's the second English language book I bought for my daughter: Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass in one book.
  2. The re-make was less scary. I remember first watching the original movie in the '90s when I was around 12-13 years old. It was so scary. Now years later I watched the remake which wasn't scary at all. If anyone plans to watch the movie, I think you're better off watching the original movie unless you want less of a scare.
  3. My son wasn't much of a reader either. It was always my daugher and me. Sometimes my son would read a book, but mostly he enjoyed comics which is better than nothing. Now he's starting to read more real books too. I have the habbit of reading the Sil, the Hobbit and LOTR to my children each year apart from other books I read to them. Right now we're nearing the end of The Hobbit. I have the English versions of the books, so when I read them to my children, I always translate them to Dutch while reading. Out of nowhere my son asked if The Hobbit was available in Dutch so he could always read it himself too instead of having to wait each year for me to read it to him and my daughter. I was so happy he was requesting for a book without me having to encourage him, next day I immediately bought it for him. Though I'm still finishing reading The Hobbit to my children, my son has began reading his Dutch translation by himself from the beginning. He loves the stories in the Sil too, so I'll be surprising him with that for his birthday I think. I'm hoping this will be the start of his reading more other books too.
  4. I once saw a documentary which showed the house as it is now. The people who have lived there for years said they noticed nothing strange and the house is normal. They had the windows changed which made the house look scarier into more normal windows and said still people came to look at the house. It also said how everything about the paranormal activity was made up by the first people who came to live in that house after the murders because they knew the son and wanted to help his case that some terrible force made him commit them. Even though untrue, still a scary story.
  5. Right now my children are watching Nickolodeon and I'm trying to ignore the tv.
  6. It's nice to have a family member to share books with. Sometimes my daughter reads my books and sometimes I read hers. She's read my childhood books. I enjoy that most I think, to compare opinions I had around her age of those same books and share the experience of having read those books. I like to read children's books every now and then. Some of them are written well enough to be enjoyed by adults.
  7. Last night we watched the 'Blade Runner' and 'The Last Emperor'.
  8. I'm reading a book for children, 'Endymion Spring', but still enjoying it. I'm about to go to bed and read before I sleep.
  9. Afer many years I finally found 'Clue' ('85 movie which I saw in the '90s). It's on YouTube and definitely worth watching for anyone who likes a good laugh, doesn't mind silly jokes every now and then and likes whodunnits. Today I found another movie which I'd been searching for the past few years: Blade Runner. I bought it immediately and am looking forward to watch it again, also after many years.
  10. I brought back several books to the library today and have one left at home to start reading: "Wish you were here" by Mike Gayle. I previously read his "The to-do list" and "Turning thirty", both great reads. He is very funny and at the same time puts life lessons in his books, well, they were in "The to-do list" and "Turning thirty" anyway. I think Gayle is probably the funniest writer from the U.K. since Townsend. I deliberately didn't stay long in our library today, because when I do I always end up taking lots of books while I still have a few unread books of my own at home, waiting for months to be read. And now I'm finally going to finish those too and until I've read them all, I'll be taking less books than normal from the library. Well, I'll try anyway. It's always difficult to go the library and not take many books home!
  11. There is an interesting discussion called 'Helvetica: Typography and Imagination on YouTube in case anyone is interested:
  12. Some family members read about Islam once in a while, other than that, nobody as far as I know (I have many family members in different countries and don't keep up with everyone's life). I think I'm the only person who reads a lot of fiction and non-fiction in my family, my daughter loves fiction. Sometimes we both read the same book and share experiences. My son loves comics and fiction, but sometimes he doesn't read much for months, so I guess my daughter and I probably read most in our family. Where it came from? I have no idea. Love for books has been there for me from the time I learnt to read. Most family members often tried to stop me from reading fiction, especially my parents thought reading would be disastrous for my school results. Quite silly actually, since books are actually better for school results, they improve language capability for example. I have a few friends who enjoy reading too, they read less nowadays though because of work and family life. Still books are a part of their lives, perhaps in a less busy time in their lives they'll be able to increase reading.
  13. I'm sure there are some tv programmes about authors and books on Dutch tv, every Sunday morning a guest author is being interviewed for example. But I mostly watch the documentaries on YouTubes. They have something on different authors and poets. Even discussions about specific literature subjects. Right now I'm listening to a discussion about the motive for metaphor. YouTube is a wonderful source for different types of literature and poetry topic discussions and documentaries.
  14. Last week I took my children to Gulliver's Travels and yesterday my daughter and I watched The King's Speech. Both nice movies. I thought I was going to cringe while watching Gulliver's Travels, instead I had some laughs and to my surprise quite enjoyed it (though there were some nauseating scenes and some silly unnecesary stuff). I would love to watch a movie of the entire Gulliver's Travels as written in the book instead of people always filming Lilliput versions. Perhaps even a series about all the travels. Oh well. Enjoyed every minute of The King's Speech, worth buying on dvd one day.
  15. I took my daughter to watch it yesterday. We both enjoyed it. She's 13 and loved this character driven movie as much as I did. It's definitely worth watching. I'm going to buy the dvd one day and show it to my son as well. The way they filmed it made it an interesting topic even for people who mostly like action movies or who aren't interested in historical topics at all. Great script, wonderful acting, loved the background and the music (which wasn't taking over the movie, just enough where needed) It's true that not all Oscar winning movies really are Oscar material. Quite often I've disliked Oscar winning movies and loved movies which every one else hated. In this case however, the movie really was worthy of all the attention and rewards it got.
  16. That's sad. What's happening to libraries? When cuts have to be made, libraries go first? In Holland we're going to have less libraries too. One of my favorite libraries in my home town closed down a few years ago, I used to go there while growing up. We had quite a few different libraries, now there are only two left. Fortunately the one with more books is near my home. They almost closed it twice in the past few years!
  17. Too bad they didn't make more episodes. I watched an interview of some cast members on YouTube and from their answers it seems that there never were plans for more than one season, some of them knew that a long time before the series ended.
  18. I haven't read it yet. I hope it'll be available here soon. I'm looking forward to reading more Alan Bradley books.
  19. A few weeks ago our library collection finally added this book and it was certainly worth it! I enjoyed every sentence of this book. I love the humour and the unusual characters. The bits about chemistry and history make the book even more appealing. Absolutely love to buy this one some day. Flavia de Luce has become one of my favorite literary characters of all time. It's the best and most enjoyable detective I've ever read, because that's what it basically is. Well, I must say I haven't read that many detectives, but from the few I have, this one is the most excellent.
  20. Yes, so true. Lost just seemed to go on and on, we stopped watching it. I remember a different series called Taken. It didn't drag on for years and in the last episode all running story lines were explained and finished. You know, if it's something like a comedy series which remains funny throughout most episodes, I don't mind. I guess it depends on the genre for me.
  21. Then that book is on my reading list now, that is if I can find it here. The series seemed to stop suddenly. Many story lines weren't finished yet, perhaps they wanted an open ending. I really enjoyed watching it. They should at least have made an episode to finish the running story lines.
  22. Other than crums of bread or cookies and what appears to be tomatoe sauce (I hope), book marks (however, never very nice ones), notes (with name of other books to read, one note calling some teacher bad names, a note with just a name), once a picture, a news paper article. The notes, book marks and picture were only in library books, so I put them back in those books. You never know if somone realises it's still in the already returned library book and needs it back. However, in used books I buy, I always take these items out. I don't buy new books very often.
  23. Have you watched the tv series? I didn't know they were based on a book.
  24. That depends on what I'm actually reading. Sometimes I don't even go the library for a year, because then I've got too many books at home I'm still reading or something I'm rereading. Another reason is some books aren't available in the library, so I read them online.
  25. They enjoyed the stories, it was the second time for my son so he understood them better now. I think The Sil needs a reread for better comprehension because of so many characters and events. My daughter liked the stories too, but often had to be reminded of the background of certain characters. I think when we read it next year she'll remember and understand it better. They said it was nice to know the origins of some of the characters and places of Middle Earth. They both prefer 'The Hobbit' though.
