  1. Thank you. I'm looking forward to it, it seems so exciting. I read the entire Potter sequense to my daughter and my son listened to parts of it. They really enjoyed it, especially my daughter. I found myself actually liking the books too which came as a surprise actually. The books were much better for me than the movies and my daughter agrees. Though she likes the movies too, her favorites are part three and part five. From the books we both liked part four a lot and personally I think the later parts of the sequence were better than the first two or three. Though I'm not a fan of the Potter sequence, even I did like them and seeing how much my children enjoy them, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful read. It'll make your holiday even nicer I'm sure.
  2. Thanks for the interesting replies everyone. I have to say, that on this forum I also found many book titles. Reading opinions against and for certain books, actually did make me very curious to read those books myself. Also, these past years, I've been reading more classics than contemporary books, so I didn't keep up with the writers of our time. This forum is also interesting because of that, to find out what is being published now and when I read the positive and negative opinions or just what a book is about, it gives me an idea of our current writers and what is being published now. It's easier then to decide what to read of our contemporary writers. Sometimes that also results in reading books I normally wouldn't have read or even noticed. Movies are also one reason to read something different. I didn't think about that when I wrote my first post, but I've also noticed some writers or chosen some books after wachting or hearing about some movies. Often in these cases, when I read the book after watching the movie, I understood the movie better. Mostly I liked the books more than their movies, not because I had seen the movie first though, because when I read a book first which was later filmed, I also mostly like the book more.
  3. I've never really been on a holiday anywhere. We did go abroad often when I was growing up, but that was for family visits and after that, I've never been anywhere. This year however, we're visiting a town at the other end of Holland. It's still not a real holiday, because we'll only spend one night there in a hotel. My children and I want to explore a part of the caves there, visit a puppet museum and enjoy the atmosphere of the town. (and of course be the laughing stock of everyone who sees us) I can't be without books, but I'm afraid to take any library book because it could get lost in the train or in the hotel. So I'm taking one of my own books. I don't know yet which book it will be.
  4. My name is Dolores Claiborne, about to turn 66 and the police thinks I killed the woman who's housekeeper I was. Years ago I did kill my husband, but I'm telling the police that I didn't kill this woman now. We are in the police station Little Tall Island. Now I have to go back to the tv, no, not Dolores, but me, sadya.
  5. 'Wat vroeg je, Andy Bissette? Of ik 'die rechten begrijp zoals je ze aan mij hebt uitgelegd'? I'm reading a Dutch translation actually of a book which was written in English. Now I'll translate it back to English as well as I can: 'Wat did you ask, Andy Bissette? If I "understand those rights as you've explained them to me"?' (from 'Dolores Claiborne' by Stephen King)
  6. I recently finished that one. I'm planning to read all the books of that sequence.
  7. "More than half a century has passed away since I, the youngest of the mourners, attended the funeral of my dear Aunt Jane in Winchester Cathedral; and now, in my old age, I am asked wether my memory will serve to rescue from oblivion any events of her life or any traits of her character to satisfy the enquiries of a generation of readers who have been born since she died." From 'Memoir of Jane Austen' by James Edward Austen-Leigh.
  8. I am James Edward Austen-Leigh, living around 1870, telling you about the life of my Aunty Jane Austen.
  9. I do the same, but yet sometimes when I renew, I'm already one or more days late! And what's even worse, I can easily do it online, yet I'm not always on time. I just don't always realise I have to bring the books back on that particular day. So I often try to finish the books without having to renew them. Now I have an already finished book at home because I'm too lazy to go to the library and finally get the other books I want to read. There is so much to read online as well, so I think that's perhaps why. Also I've been watching more films and tv shows lateley.
  10. I disliked descriptions, I wasn't always fond of them. Until I read LOTR, which did have some nice descriptions. And I had read something of Virginia Woolf which I liked. But those were an exception, even years after that, I still disliked descriptions and I confess I sometimes didn't read them entirely! Then I discovered writers like Gogol, de Balzac, Gorki, Proust and I read more of Woolf, that changed my understanding and appreciation of descriptions. There are writers whose descriptions alone are worth reading! Some years ago I took a course to learn to write stories. That changed the way I read too. Trying to write seriously more stories yourself makes you appreciate certain writings even better, knowing difficulties and recognising certain efforts. The writing course also thaught different ways of writing and I then read some books about analysing literature. So when I read a book now, after reading it, I think about all that and try to view the book in light of a certain theory or understand the construction. And what about the discussion which is becoming clich
  11. I'm not sure if it's a good idea, because sometimes with offers like these you have to buy some books you actually didn't like. But if you already know or if you think that you will like most of the books, then it's ok
  12. I agree with some of the posts here. Umbridge is from Harry Potter, right? If she is, she's definitely one, I read Harry Potter to my daughter mostly, sometimes my son listened too. My children are huge Harry Potter fans. In Holland I think she is called Omber, but I'm not sure about that. It's been a while. In about two weeks, I'm taking them to watch the latest Harry Potter movie. They are so excited about it! Bill Sykes too, as some have mentioned already. For Gollum I started to feel sorry, the further the story advanced, but then he did a few nasty things to make me hate him again. There were more villains in LOTR which I disliked, amongst whom were Saruman and Sauron. I also didn't like Melkor (Morgoth) from the Silmarillion. I don't like Becky Sharpe either, but she seemed a little less annoying in the movie than she was in the book. I didn't like the Dracula from some of the books I've read, for example, 'The Historian', but there are stories and movies where I did feel sorry for him. Same goes for vampires. I'm going to read a few more books about Dracula and vampires, but I'm not interested in reading every book about them. So I might find one which I also dislike in the few books I will read about them. I also hate husbands who abuse their wives mentally and/or physically in one way or another, in any book. General Woundwort from 'Watership Down' by Richard Adams. The phantom in 'The Phantom of the Opera' by Gaston Leroux, was very dislikeable, in the musical and some movies, he was more kind though and I felt sorry for him, but not in the book, he had a much more nasty character in the book. Most Nazi's in World War II related books. Can't think of any right now, but I'm sure there are more.
  13. Only if it's from the library and has to be returned on time. (yet somehow my books aren't always returned on time).
  14. Have a nice read. I'm not rereading this book yet. So far, I've only read it once, a few years ago. I liked it, but not enough to make me want to reread it. Perhaps in a few years I will feel like doing that. I don't know.
  15. I've been reading a lot more this year than last year, because last year many books I wanted to read weren't available for me, now I have internet, it provides access to a lot of books which I can read whenever I want without having to go to the library only find out again that the book I wanted to read, still isn't there after several weeks waiting. Since I have internet again I can read more. I've also been reading a few different kinds of books which weren't amongst the ones I was going to read. I discovered titles of books on this website which seemed interesting enough for me to try. But not everything. I also look for new titles in advertisements, if they seem interesting enough, I try them. And this year I did read some books of authors who were unknown to me or genres I didn't read much before. The last few days I read less though, I've been watching more films and comedy stuff.
  16. Perhaps you can use the first one to match the book, if you ever read "To the lighthouse" by Virginia Woolf (that's my favorite book she wrote, by the way). Ok
  17. How cute. Who was Louis A Camuti?
  18. It is. So she likes to embroider too, nice piece of work! What does it say on the other side? On the photo, the words aren't all legible. Two years ago, I made smaller ones for my daughters birthday, with veggies and fruit on them. When I was little, we had a teacher who taught us things like emroidery at school, ever since I've loved to do it, but I was never very good at it.
  19. Oh boy, many people can't even stop judging by their looks when it comes to books, where the inside is even more important!
  20. I like Tolkien too. I'm not fanatical though. Silmarillion was my favorite Tolkien book. Also liked 'Dorian Gray' a lot, in fact, it's one of my favourite books. A few people in this thread had it in their top 5. It's so interesting to read what everyone likes and dislikes and compare that to what you like and dislike.
  21. I gave it a chance and finished it, but it wasn't worth the effort. I hated that husband of hers, just couldn't feel sorry for him.
  22. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Br
  23. While growing up I had more disappointing reads than now. Only a few books which I really liked in those days, are still in my mind. From later years, these are some books which I wouldn't recommend to read, in no particular order: 'The Awakening' by Kate Chopin 'The Bad Mother's Handbook' by Kate Long 'Lady Chatterly's Lover' by D.H. Lawrence 'Across the River and into the trees' by E. Hemingway 'The Red and the Black' by H.B. Stendhall I can't say this is my top 5, because there are more which I can't think of now and it's difficult to decide which was worse for me. They weren't really bad, in fact, some of them were written very well. Just not my taste I guess.
  24. Yes, it's so true. There is often a lot lost when a book is translated. There are books though, which I don't mind reading translated though. But there are writers who have a certain style which I do try to read in their original language if possible.
