I was able to send a friend request to everybody but Echo and Kell. For some reason I can't find you guys. =/ If you didn't get a friend request it's because I don't like you. j/k (Sorry, I couldn't help myself.) Let's try this again, If you didn't get a friend request I accidentally skipped you so please add me. I'm Fionen.

I joined as Fionen. This is better than typing all of the books I want to read in word.

The most disturbing work of fiction that you have ever read
Fionen replied to Oblomov's topic in General Fiction
*tries to forget what Geebs said* >_< A few other people mentioned this book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The book contains so many terrible things but I especially remember the part about the boar being killed and my teacher explaining that it symbolizes rape. What a lovely story about little boys on an island. -
What an awesome idea but I know I wouldn't have any success here. There aren't enough people that read and have the internet. Hmm... maybe I'll try it the next time I go on a trip.

Ditto. I bet the manga is superb.

Grown-up and Still Reading Young Adult Books?
Fionen replied to Fionen's topic in Children's / Young Adult
You should read the Myth Adventures series by Robert Asprin! It's my new goal in life to make sure everyone has heard of it. -
I can see it's true love. My sister has a big thing for guys in glasses. Daniel was one of her crushes a few years back.
-
Roxi, is it the glasses or just the nerd thing? Speaking of Stargate, Dr. Janet Fraiser does the voice of Kodachi in the english version of the Ranma 1/2 anime. Very cool.

The thing I like about manga over anime is that there are more details especially when it comes to character development. You can watch the anime and then read the manga and get so much more out of it. It's the same as turning a full-text book into a movie. If I don't want to bother buying 20+ volumes of a manga that has mediocre ratings I'll watch the anime instead. I also tend to watch the anime of action themed stories rather than read the manga. I agree, Angel Sanctuary has some of the most beautiful drawings I've ever seen. I watched the Cowboy Bebop movie and have thought about getting into that series as well. Just a warning to those wanting to try out manga. Check up on your series before buying. Some of them have the first book or two but were never finished. I've been really disappointed by a few unfinished series because they had so much potential. These are the unfinished series I know of: Desert Coral by Wataru Murayama Honey Mustard by Ho-kyung Yeo Saint Marie by Yang Yeo-Jin Sweet & Sensitive by Park Eun-Ah Witch Class by Lee Ru I saw that thread but they weren't talking about Asian graphic novels and I felt that I would be throwing it off-topic if I jumped in.

Yes. All the more reason to watch Whisper of the Heart.

Nineteen Eighty-Four - George Orwell The Good Earth - Pearl S. Buck Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card The Giver - Lois Lowry Wheel of Time series - Robert Jordan

Manga are Japanese graphic novels and manwha are Korean graphic novels. Most people just call them both "manga".
-
I'm still amazed that more people haven't read them. Celba, I'm glad you're willing to give them a chance.
-
Are there any other manga/manwha fans here? I usually stick to shojo manga. Right now I'm reading Othello by Satomi Ikezawa. My favorite all time manga is Please Save My Earth by Saki Hiwatari. The drawings aren't that great at first but as the series goes on they become fantastic. It's about Japanese high-schoolers that dream of their past lives and how it changes them and their relationships. It's really interesting. Some of my other favorites are The Demon Ororon by Hakase Mizuki and Peach Girl by Miwa Ueda. What are you reading right now? What are your favorites?

How many books do you read at once?
Fionen replied to aromaannie's topic in General Book Discussions
I read one book at a time. Although, I usually have a magazine and manga waiting to be finished. Those are the reading materials I switch between during different moods. -
Yeah, Mark is pretty cool now. It seems that they like to bring in characters that everyone hates and slowly turn them into characters that everyone loves. George was one of my favorite characters until he and Izzie hooked up. IMO, his character has just been going downhill eversince. Maybe he's smart to leave the show. I really like Cristina's new love interest. (I'm not sure how far along everyone is so I don't want to spoil it.) I'm trying not to get too attached because who knows how long he'll be around.

Grown-up and Still Reading Young Adult Books?
Fionen replied to Fionen's topic in Children's / Young Adult
You guys described exactly how I feel about them. It's good to know that I'm not a weirdo. -
Meh, I'd rather she play a part that is a bit young for her than not be on the show at all. Hmm... I just checked out wikipedia and it seems that Meredith isn't the only one. Alex is actually 39 and Christina is 38. That is so weird. >_<

Grown-up and Still Reading Young Adult Books?
Fionen replied to Fionen's topic in Children's / Young Adult
It took me a bit to get the poll up. Ya'll need to take the poll. -
I'm twenty-seven and I still read books from the young adult section. I'm just wondering how many of you are the same way.

I'm surprised that the Myth Adventures series by Robert Asprin hasn't been mentioned. They're light-hearted fantasy books about a wizard and his apprentice as they travel to other dimensions. Has anyone else read them?
-
Thank you all for welcoming me. I've only read through the 5th book. That's a lot for me considering how big they are. It really is an amazing series and I plan to finish it someday. It's a shame that Robert Jordan was unable to finish the last book but it sounds like they have a great author working on it now. I've read The Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce. Those are the only books I've ever read more than once and I'll probably read them again in a few years time. Alanna is so awesome. I've also read the first two books in The Immortals series which were also excellent. I've had a few people recommend The Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. Now you're one of them. I've only read the first two books of The Old Kingdom series. As usual I started a series and lost motivation part of the way through. A book can be fantastic and I'll still lose interest. It's my curse. It's nice to know that I'm not alone. I've never posted on a UK forum before. I keep imagining all of these different accents. I've been watching The IT Crowd so if someone is from Ireland you can bet that they sound like Roy in my head.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that it's a computer game. You play a new housewife on the block. Game play includes buying and wearing different outfits, decorating your house, tending your garden, cooking meals, and interacting with the people of Wisteria Lane. You can be good, bad, or a little of both. There is a big secret that you have to uncover and different endings to choose from. It's just wonderful. It's also user friendly for those that don't have much experience with computer games. I've played it twice. It's one of my favorites. I wish they had made a second one but it just wasn't popular enough. That's why I'm so excited about the Grey's Anatomy computer game.
-
I noticed that too but I had no idea that she is 40 in real life! Isn't her character supposed to be 30-ish? Edit: I just wanted to clarify that the Grey's Anatomy game is for computers.

I live in the U.S. I was born in Utah and lived there for most of my life then moved to West Virginia to be closer to family. According to the recent poll I moved from the happiest state to the saddest.
