  1. I don't care that I have a signed collector's edition of Northern Lights waiting patiently on the shelf; I'm still jealous of your very likely future purchase...!
  2. Ouch, that doesn't sound too good Steve on the other hand, consider your luck: your feet have arches; mine have to be hammered into having arches (with in-soles, but they feel like hammers)! The thoughtlessness of Londonites never ceases to bug me. I was stopped by a woman in tears today, a heavily pregnant woman in tears who having just fought with her boyfriend had been left stranded in the neighbourhood with no change to get home. Now, I'm not a rich person by any means but if with
  3. Oooh, thanks for the heads up Poppy - I quite like Rankin, I don't find him quite as consistent as Pratchett but he's one author I always look out for nonetheless. Chances are he'll be signing this at Forbidden Planet whenever it comes out, I need to investigate...!
  4. I used to love wine with my food (red exclusively; white literally hospitalises me ) but I think growing up in Italy spoiled me, I like sweet fruity things like Sangue di Giuda (t. Judas's Blood ) or Fragolino (t. Small Strawberry) and you just can't get anything like it over here *weeps*!
  5. My-dear-friend-who-has-no-respect-for-the-expressive-depth-of-chairs *wagglewaggle*, I for one look forward to boring myself senseless with your journal-type-thing.

... you can't offer cake to a girl who's on a diet (she had a fry-up yesterday, but that's besides the point:lurker:) - you fiend!

Today was my second day of volunteering at OxfamBooks, no pennies but it's something to keep the brain occupied and it gives me bookselling experience to plead my case better the next time W's and F's have any suitable vacancies going :) going back tomorrow afternoon, hopefully the till won't beep at me as much!

  6. Glad my collector's retentiveness could help !
  7. Bed - as I said to my horrified R.E. teacher back in high school, 'my temple's in my head and God won't love me any less if I pray to him when I wake up for lunch' ! Painted nails or clear?
  8. I'm a half-decent cook (when I had proper housemates they used to steal food from my plate all the time, and I can even follow recipes if I have millions of hours and really fry my brain concentrating), yet I hate doing it - it puts strain on my bad ankle and wrists, plus I'm really clumsy so I'm always dropping utensils/bits of food which isn't good as I'm very easily vexed into tears/growls/banging cupboard doors I've taken to listening to music as I cook and that helps me not to stress out. I'd still rather not do it if I could help it, though.
  9. Aw, sweetheart - I wouldn't have you weeping for my sake. I am indeed a lot better now, and words as beautiful as you always seem to be able to pick out from the sea of language make my smile even wider. Never stop being as amazing as you are :) I hope that you too are well, and as happy as you deserve to be.

  10. I have no idea whatsoever how one spells 'chopsed', so I think it's probably best to leave it at 'conversed' and say no more about it !

I'm alright, or at least better than you last found me, so there :) still jobless and impoverished, but marginally more positive than I was so thats gotta be good. How about you my friend, how are you doing?

You've been missed too you know :friends0: x

  11. Nearing page 200 of Eyes Like Stars. I'm un-amused by the shape the love triangule is leaning towards ( !), however as I am usually left cold by this kind of geometry my annoyance is ascribable to Lisa Mantchev's creating characters I truly care about, so well done her. I think I get the whole 'team' thing now ( !) .
  12. While I was writing my dissertation at the British Library last summer, there was this guy who used to come and sit at the desk next to me, read about a page, then roll his woolly hat down over his eyes and go to sleep. Pretty much every day he'd snore for hours on end while I was trying to make sense of Shakespearean criticism, I wasn't amused at all yet I'm so much of a pushover I never got a librarian to kick him out. I should have, really.
  13. It's one of the very few shirts I have to wear for job interviews so I think I'll pass on your suggestion, Raven...!
  14. My tuppence: - Oxford World Classics (the new white banded ones): good paper/ink, excellent introductions - Penguin Classics (the new black banded ones): decent paper/ink, good introductions - Wordsworth Classics: average paper/ink, usually no introduction - Penguin Popular Classics: ghastly paper/ink, usually no introduction
  15. Just researched it - a bottle of Wine Away would cost me nearly as much as buying the shirt again...! I'm not really a wine drinker you see (I only had a glass last night because a friend took me to a theatre press night and the free drink voucher was for wine) so it wouldn't really be an investment; I was hoping for something more along the lines of a household remedy...?
  16. My sister says to handwash the item with cold water and bleach but it's a cream shirt with black polka dots so I'm terrified bleach will ruin the pattern... help? I only have 5 shirts in the world so I'm not in the financial position to throw it away!
  17. I know being a cashier is a lame job and don't expect them to be overly cheery or anything; I also don't expect them to pack my stuff. However, considering it's quite obvious I need help (I have problems standing up and my coordination and multitasking skills are appalling so you can really see me struggle as I narrowly avoid falling over while trying to pay and unstick the silly plastic bags at the same time) it would be nice if they asked rather than looking at me like I'm a spaz. Yes, I know I'm a spaz. Can I have a hand now please? I never say it but boy do I feel like it.
  18. Are the notes any good, do I invest?
  19. If you like be warned though Noll, my cooking isn't exactly slimming. Definitely tasty though, I remember my housemates back in Liverpool stealing food off my plate all the time!
  20. Dinner tonight will be chopped-up beef burgers curried with a blend of Korma sauce, Rogan Josh paste and creamed coconut with added red & yellow peppers and fresh ginger. Good news is it's already cooked and marinading in the fridge so all I'll need to do is heat it up and boil some rice. There's noodles with apple sausages in ginger and oyster sauce leftovers to be eaten too, so we might have to scoff those as well !
  21. My feeling exactly, and it's hardly a nice feeling. The way I understand it is that he worships women as the key to a man's happiness (so far so good, except he equates happiness with sexual fulfilment)... but nothing more than that - individuals with a mind and aspirations? Nah. His attempts to make this sound better by claiming that no job in the world is more important than making a man happy just make things worse, IMHO. Seriously, Nathaniel Hawthorne died 19 years before Lawrence was even born and had a better understanding of women !
  22. Dexter, S02E01 ah, how I missed this show!
  23. It's not the second-handness I mind per se, quite a few books in Oxfam look brand new and none are really bad - we have to recycle so many, it's unbelievable the things some people dare to donate (a book I binned on Thursday, for instance, had half of the cover torn off ) - it's the pencilled-in prices I can't stand. I asked a colleague whether they could price the books I want to buy on a post-it note rather than the flyleaf, and I was told that we only use soft pencils that are easy to rub out - I found it very hard not to open my mouth to disagree... erase as much as you want, you'll be able to tell forevermore that a book's been priced.
  24. Clearly ! Seriously though, I admire your restraint and commend it as the most sensible course of action. I remember when I skimmed ahead in HP to I put the book down for ages because I didn't want to get to that bit!
  25. Ugh, Kylie - that would send me right up the wall, down again and right through the roof!
