Thanks CaliLily, at least I know it's not just over here then
I have to admit, I love vinegar on my chips (fries) with just a little bit of salt, and can't eat them without it, so to think that it could be used as a punishment is just strange!

Salt and vinegar?
This has got me wondering ... is salt and vinegar a British thing? I remember getting very strange looks in Australia when I asked for some vinegar to go with the salt on my chips. I know it's a bit off topic, but can anyone tell me if we're unique in our appreciation of salt and vinegar on our potatoes?

Decided once a year isn't enough, so we've just had another batch of pancakes with lemon juice and a sprinkling of sugar

That makes me laugh, just imagining him saying it! I still can't forget the rant over The Da Vinci Code - when I hear anyone else talk about it or see the book or DVD of it in a shop, and I have his voice in my head shouting "SOMEONE TURN THE LIGHTS ON"

Hi Chesilbeach. I see your reading Mark Kermode at the moment. Is it an autobiography or just some memorable moment from some of his interviews etc? I absolutely love the radio show on Friday's on radio 5 and think this will be a must purchase for me. Look forward to hearing your views on it.
It is sort of an autobiography but looking at how film has affected his life from a very early age. I too love him with Simon Mayo in their wittertainment programme on Radio 5, and I have to say, I'm about 120 pages in, and it's just like having a written form of the programme! I've laughed out loud a lot, especially when he's talking about Mamma Mia!
I can't think it's going to get worse, so I'm already heartily recommending it to Kermode fans without having finished it.

Ok, ok, I'm convinced ... series two, here I come!

Although I enjoyed Brazzaville Beach, for some reason I just didn't enjoy it quite as much as the others I've read, but still a great read
He certainly writes well from a female perspective though.

I'd convinced myself I wasn't going to bother with series two, and then you all start talking about how much better it is than series one, and Eric being funnier, and now here I am looking up when it's on!

Ok, try this one ...
All I'm saying is that somewhere out there is the man you are supposed to marry. And if you don't get him first, somebody else will, and you'll have to spend the rest of your life knowing that somebody else is married to your husband.

Glad you enjoyed Restless; I liked it a lot when I read it a couple of years ago. I'm (slowly) working my way through Boyd's other books, but my favourite so far is Any Human Heart.

I'll pick up the next one, just to get the game going again ...
