  1. I think of them as very different countries. Regardless of political technicalities, Wales has its own language, culture and so on. Scotland is very celtic like Ireland. England is England as we all know it. The Republic Of Ireland is I suppose the only distinctly seperate one since we've a president and all, but I don't know. I guess its because I live here that I think of them as such, like you say with dividing states. Although, theres a new challenge in itself. One book from each of every United State!
  2. Oh I know you weren't haha I can completely understand why people would get sick of it. I think its prolly coz I was 15 when I read it first, so I read it on a more childish level, and now I just love the characters too much for repetition to bother me.
  3. Ah right. I didn't even think about it tbh, I just took the list someone else had already used. Although, considering its easy to get books from scotland, wales and england seperately, I don't mind reading books for each of those. I'm not really concerned with the politics, its really only a guideline to get me reading differents kinds of books, and the whole challenge is open to interpretation anyway.
  4. Well you're entirely entitled to your opinion, and I do agree it drags a bit at the end, but the story ended up being secondary to character development for me in the end. Like I say in my longer ramble, I love Dustfinger. He is why I loved the book, and indeed the second which i'm going re-reading. I just think hes brilliant, the way he starts off as a mysterious guy you don't quite trust, to being the one who probably know the most detail about. I really think hes a fantastic character.
  5. Ohhhh sorry!! I totally misunderstood. The list actually came from another challenge on this forum which someone was doing. We ended up discussing it on another thread, and then created this one (several of us, not just me.) I think it matches Wikipedia's list of countries though. Why, how would you have done it?
  6. This isn't actually on my reading list (its two sequels are) but I'm including it because I don't think anyone here has read it, and its really worth a mention if you like kid's books. Its really brilliant. Inkheart - Cornelia Funke (2003) Genre: Children
  7. Everyone should read it, yes. And note when you do - contrary to popular belief, it is not a love story. It is so very much more than that.
  8. I also have a first edition hardback of Inkspell, the second in the Inkheart Trilogy. (Only have a paperback Inkheart, and no Inkdeath yet.) Its not worth anything monetarily, obviously, since its only 4 years old. But its got a beautiful dustcover, blues and greens with a shimmery gold frame. So i'm going getting the first and third hardback first editions a.s.a.p and in years to come they will mean a lot to me. Books I want: Early edition Wuthering Heights, theres some lovely ones, and I'd love to get a first edition Winnie-The-Pooh or House At Pooh Corner. Theres a first edition Winnie-The-Pooh on ebay, only at
  9. Hah, people telling me I make sense. Thats very rare =P I'm only reading one right now, What Dreams May Come. Its.......not very good thus far =/ It read's like B.F. Skinner's Walden 2, which was essentially a behaviourist making a point about psychology in novel form. He had his main character explaining the theory, and other characters asking every possible question the reader could think up, to make the theory watertight. Thats what WDMC is like. Meh. Maybe it'll get better.
  10. I meant to check my copy of The Counte Of Monte Cristo when I was at home.... How did I forget???? Grr. For some reason I think its an edition from the 1800's, but at most its the early 1900's. I really must find out >_<
  11. ................. You fall over WAY too much.
  12. 'I'm sorry, she was having a Cathy moment.' Hehe. I can see the attraction, totally. Its my favourite book, I adore Heathcliff and Cathy and the relationship between them.
  13. I doubt there would be threads enough to sustain it. This is techically non-fiction, even without being fact. I don't see the problem in it being here, if people are going to get offended, stay out of the thread with 'prayer' in the title.
  14. I do it out of habit, when I was small and used to get two library books out, I used to read both at once. As I got older I could take our 3 and 4, and read them all at once too. My brother used to tell me I was stupid, but still, its a habit that stuck. I easily remember whats going on in a good book and to me its like eating breakfast lunch and dinner - sometimes I want something savoury, sometimes I want something sweet, and I always like having a book nearby to accommodate my mood!
  15. Yeah this is a great challenge idea, one I had already been planning on doing next year or the year after, so it'll be interesting to see how you get on Good luck!
  16. Sure, we all researched seperately so I can't speak for others. I looked through blogs which did similar challenges and looked through wikipedia for more information and things. Having said that I think Lexiepiper was the biggest contributer. The list is a rough outline, personally I've chosen to also include books ABOUT countries because I really want a complete list. (Thats in my own blog list, not on here, this is strictly country by author.) So really its an aid for people to develop their version of the challange, or as Lexipiper suggested at one point 'not something anyone will actually complete but will encourage us to read outside our comfort zone.
  17. Hey - just saw the religious book/thread thing.

I'm not posting there coz I don't want to cause hassle - personally I agree with you, but I'm biased because I hate organised religion. I don't think its that you don't fit in here, I think its just this isn't the kind of forum that debates really deep and personal things like religion.

I wouldn't take it personally, most people here are just very easy going and try to avoid any confrontation at all.

    :D

  18. I love the Christmas one. 'even at the home of the Black Stuff, we're dreaming of a white one.' Its a lovely ad.
  19. Whoops, sorry The Da Vinci Code seems to be the most popular vote, and other people said 1984, Atonement and I said Twilight. Anything else?
  20. LMAO!!! Hahahahaha awwwwwhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
  21. Don't slap Charm O_O I love 1984, but I won't be impressed if anyone slaps Charm
  22. To be totally honest Charm, its a case of it being SO hyped that it wasn't actually appreciated at all. Its a damn good read, but the excessive hype spoiled that. I read it when no one had heard of either book, and I thought they were both superb, if a little samey. Angels And Demons is better, as I keep saying, because its religion versus science as opposed to just religious controversy.
  23. Mine are chucked unceremoniously in a huge cupboard with very deep shelves. 5 shelves. Tis cool.
