  1. Happy Reading for 2021 one and all! I have really enjoyed my romp with Magnus Chase through his Norse quests in the Rick Riordan trilogy. Nothing like a life threatening quest through myths and legends to keep my mojo happy as we enter a new year.
  2. Any idea what classic novel you might read?
  3. I watched The Da Vinci Code. Easy viewing for sure, but was just what we needed at the time.
  4. Welcome to my reading thread. I will stick with my usual set up, of listing the books up here, and writing about them below. Happy Reading! 1) Magnus Chase & The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan 2) Magnus Chase & The Hammer of Thor by Rick Riordan 3) Magnus Chase & The Ship of The Dead by Rick Riordan 4) Tod Hunter Moon : Path-Finder by Angie Sage 5) Tod Hunter Moon : Sand-Rider by Angie Sage 6) Tod Hunter Moon : Star-Chaser by Angie Sage 7) Magyk by Angie Sage 8) Flyte by Angie Sage 9) Physik by Angie Sage 10) Queste by Angie Sage 11) Syren by Angie Sage 12) Darke by Angie Sage 13) Fyre by Angie Sage 14) 9 From The Nine Worlds by Rick Riordan 15) Hunting In Bruges by EL Stevens 16) Hard Time by Jodi Taylor
  5. I finished my last Heroes of Olympus (Greek & Roman gods and myths) book yesterday, the carry on series from Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series (Greek gods & myths). An enjoyable romp. Will be starting Jodi Taylor's annual Christmas Day short story from her Chronicles of St Mary's series. Thereafter I plan on sallying forth with Rick Riordan again, this time with his Magnus Chase Norse mythology series. Looking forward to keeping my spirits and reading mojo up and running with Riordan's enjoyable characters and pacey stories.
  6. Happy New Year! I wish you all a year of peace, health and happiness. (At the end of 2019 I decided that 2020 was to be 'my year'. After the gods finished laughing at me they gave us all the year we just had. Sorry folks! )
  7. Whenever I wake in the night, and it is one of those nights where getting up is the only solution, I do sudoko puzzles. They are great for calming my brain down. If I read I tend to get engrossed and then try to stay awake to carry on.
  8. We are expecting the first omnibus of Asterix today! I wanted to leave it until after the Christmas hoohah before I ordered it. My husband has actually given me strict instructions on what to do with his railway book collection if he dies before me! (With my cooking, this is the likely scenario. ) You've pretty much described all the reasons I enjoyed the book! Absolute, totally bonkers escapism, all wrapped up with a golden horse who smells of ginger biscuits! If you thought this one was unbelievable, I would truly avoid the second book....although I don't feel you need much persuading.
  9. Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all enjoy your day.
  10. Christmas Is here now I have seen this! Thank you muggle not, and I hope you enjoy a wonderful Christmas.
  11. Love it! We expect great things to be written at this desk, Hayley!
  12. Hello Booknutt, good to 'see' you. Earlier in the year I carried out a thoroughly immersive reading through the Mortal Instruments (City of....) universe. I started with her Infernal Devices trilogy (set in Victorian London), then onto the six Mortal Instruments books, and the later Dark Artifices trilogy. From there I danced through three extensive short story collections; that I had managed to get as complete collections; Ghosts of The Shadow Market, The Bane Chronicles and Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy. It was pleasant to lose myself in them. The character development for the central characters is good, and Cassandra Clare's paints interesting worlds, and the scenes therein. I do agree that age is no barrier, I have enjoyed a lot of YA fiction over the years. I really look forward to reading what you think of them when you have read them. Merry Christmas Booknutt!
  13. Wet, windy and 'orrible. Gloomy indeed.
  14. What a lovely gift, and yes, we really do need pics!
  15. I watched and enjoyed the first series, and felt comfortable with the changes they made from the books. The second series has been recorded, and I will settle down to watch that in the new year. Having seen a few of the previews I have been a bit worried about this second series, but will try to not be too nervous about it. *gulp*
  16. I went with a re read of his Percy Jackson series (starts Greek, heads into Roman territory) before head Norse! I did start the first in the Magnus Chase books a while back, but life happened and I have only recently bought the next in the series. I do remember that it was another good Rick Riordan read, presented in a familiar way to his other books. If you like Riordan's style, then the Norse series will not let you down. I intend on reading them, promise! I just had never got around to it. I have Latin dictionaries and whatnot here, so will keep them on hand when I do get them.
  17. My final shop of the year took place this morning, and I was happily back in the car by ten past six. Phew! Over the weekend I thought it would be better to get it done earlier than usual (I usually go in around 6am). From the numbers going in as I came away, I made the right decision. I only had a little 'topping up' shopping to do, so it was pretty painless. Now I can relax.
  18. I'm struggling to think of anything that fits what you are looking for. For dark fantasy I could recommend EJ Stevens' Ivy Granger series. Action, magic and the supernatural. SM Reine's urban fantasy series of books (a whole range of them) might also interest you, No castles with either series though. Good luck with finding something you'll enjoy reading.
  19. Apparently the films are considered a travesty by the 10-11 years old readers! I haven't seen them, so have no idea, but it's the age old book vs film kerfuffle. I can tell you, however, that your quip about Asterix has led to me looking to buy three Asterix Omnibuses (buses? busi?) in the new year. Husband loves them (I've said before - anything featuring Romans!) and I have *whispers* never read them.
  20. The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan is very good (to Raven). I'm reading my way through them at the moment. Gods, magic, Titans, monsters and mythology. Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments ( plus all the prequels and sequels and alongside books) series is another series you might consider. Shadow hunters, vampires, werewolves, demons etc Angie Sage's Septimus Heap series, and her TodHunter Moon series are both really good, with magic, dragons, wizards and castles. In each case the world building is pretty good, and you can immerse yourself in the books for proper escapism. Nicely written, with engaging characters to love and hate, action that is generally well paced, and character development. None of them are Harry Potter, but they all have quest aspects and paths that the protagonists must take etc.
  21. All sorts of people enjoy reading, so I would expect there are many who also wear make up. I wouldn't automatically put the two things together though.
  22. If it is longer than a day I will be rushing to The Netherlands to check you are OK! I am enjoying a meander through Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson Greek demi-god series. Currently on book 5, Percy Jackson & The Last Olympian. I enjoy being reminded of many aspects of Greek Mythology, all wrapped up in a merry YA romp-around. This, and the later related series will merrily see me through Christmas and into the New Year. All low effort but enjoyable.
