  1. Please ignore my request from two below, now the heady excitement of such a recommendation has passed, I realise this was an inappropriate request! Put it down to youthful exuberance (that's my excuse anyway!)

  2. Chimera I'll second that one too. I had forgotten that book about Helen Keller. Quite a remarkable story.
  3. ps: Cute little girl! I've two girls and one boy myself...the baby wriggling off my lap as I type! mst go feed her!

  4. I am so excited! we have just got our first major review done by another book review site. Can I post a link or wait until your review is done?

  5. I have two that I loved. Both are personal journeys but also follow earlier generations of their respective families. White Swans, three daughters of China by Jung Chang documents the change in life in China, from the feudal system and the life the grandmother of the author had, her mother under Communism and then her life. My Place by Sally Morgan documents the discovery of the Aboriginal family she never knew existed.
  6. Hi there I heard someone (a reviewer I think) lamenting the fact that here in Australia, none of the large publishing houses will publish poetry. Is this a world-wide pheonomena? If so, what do you see as the future of poetry?
  7. Interesting spread of opinions. I had heard of it...don't think I'll worry about getting it by the sounds of things here.
  8. Nothing...they are great by themselves. Or maybe a little bit of butter after you have dusted it lightly with cinnamon. eta: just realised I repeated the suggestions of those below...should read other posts first huh!
  9. Lovely!
  10. The Eleventh Sheep. Enjoyed once again by all!
  11. I haven't had time to read all the posts so it may already be here....April Fool's Day by Bryce Courtney. It tells his son's story from a childhood lived with haemophilia until his untimely death through contracting HIV from an (ironically) life-saving blood transfusion. I couldn't read it in the train, I would have run out of tissues. A brilliantly written account though. And Dead Man Walking...the barbarity of capital punishment.
  12. That was the name of that movie....dreadful (and to think I chose it over something that would have been far better on one of the few kid free nights we get !)
  13. It seems to me in every good book there is at least one sentence that is just the most beautiful pearl of wisdom. Here is one from the book I am currently reading. :writing:"Being a warrior is more about courage to stand against evil than about fighting." What is yours?
  14. As a forum of book lovers I know you will enjoy this little gem from last night! Two nights ago, my hubby bathed the children while I finished bits and pieces around the house. I will still busy so he read the children their bedtime story. The older two were bouncing around and not interested, but the 4 month old was engrossed in the story (trying to eat the pages as they are want at that age ). Last night, I had fed the baby and the older two were ready for bed, so I swaddled the baby as normal and put her in the cot. As I asked the older two what story they would like tonight, the baby started crying. I though it was just a little winge before she fell asleep as sometimes happens. Anyway, she didn't quieten, so hubby came upstairs, picked her up and brought her into the room where we were reading. Immediately she stopped crying and sat there with this huge gummy grin on her face. We finished the book (ABC Zoo), tucked all the children into bed and she went to sleep without a murmur. So how about that, a 4 month old who loves her bedtime story!! (Is she too young to join this forum?)
  15. THE worst ever was a Tom Hanks film. I think it was a remake of an old one. A group of bankrobbers con their way into boarding with an old lady whose house ajoined, or was close to a bank they wanted to tunnel into. I can't remember the name, and really nor do I want to except that I would want to avoid it! I've just looked at the other posts, maybe I am talking about "A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"?
  16. That's where I saw it. You had mentioned that you had a son on here named Kenny who likes reading fantasy/sci-fi stuff

  17. Love the hungry caterpillar, spot and charli and lola (we only have one at present though) The others sound interesting...we have shelves of childrens books, I've listed only a few on my librarything thing, but always room for more good ones!
  18. Yes that is correct.
  19. Happy belated birthday!

  20. The plot thickens....our sons have the same birthday...though mine was born in 2002!

  21. We have just had a 180 000 word novel edited and there are mistakes (8, I think, so not huge in number) despite being re and re-read 3 times! That said, we found that numbers of those mistakes were automatic corrections done by a certain wordprocessing programme that many of us are kind of forced to use, not naming any names ....microsoft! It does not have the intelligience to work out that holies IS different to hollies for example. And that dear do not live in the forest!
  22. I think I am putting this in the wrong place, but it follows the The Book Depository thread. I love childrens picture books and have noticed that I don't know some of the authors listed by this site. Can anybody out there in bcf point me in the direction of their fav childrens picture books (FYI: I have a 6yr old boy, 4 yr old girl and a 4mth old girl) As I mentioned in the other thread, there is no shipping charge from this company so makes it worthwhile buying from them!...though with the way the $A is going at present......
  23. I noticed they also have free shipping overseas...for someone like me shipping is often the killer for buying os! We have recently sent a book to the UK for review and it cost more to send it than the book retails for! go figure, but still that is the price you need to pay sometimes to get soemthing off the ground!
  24. I think I just became your friend...if I did the right thing! Got to go now...10pm here and baby will wake only too soon for a feed!

  25. For the most scrumptious cakes, slices etc I can't go past Belinda Jeffries Mix and Bake. Her things aways work! And she tells you what freezes well. So what I do, is make whatever, cut it, pop it in the freezer so there is always something yummy there...well not at the moment. Kids are on hols, so not much thinking time for that type of thing.
