  1. Tihii! Nice to hear you enjoyed Macbeth and might be getting the Sonnets! I don't know about you but plays and poetry are a totally new zone for me, it's nice that after all these reading years there's still so much unknown ground. Too bad you didn't like Timequake though. Have you enjoyed Vonnegut's other stuff? I've only read Slaughterhouse 5 which I absolutely loved, and I'm really interested in reading anything by Vonnegut right now. Ooh and I see you're going to start Flowers for Algernon, so cool! I think you might enjoy it a lot! I have to restart reading it myself as well. And oh boy what about that Casino Royale? Well, at some point... But Kylie I'm not incorrigible, you are mistaken! Just yesterday I took Stephen King's Cell to the free book trolley at the library, having decided that I don't want to read it because so many bad reviews I've read about it. That was one book off the TBR! Also, I'm soon finished with my Ann Rule book and I'm going to give that to a true crime fan friend of mine... So I do give away, as well as hoard...
  2. Kylie, I did get Interlunar from the library but I just didn't report it on here. It was a big moment for me though I've copied the poem in the thread I have on the poetry section. Haha, I knew you'd be pleased to hear that I got me some Browning I got it mostly because of Rory, but also because I want to start reading poems and I knew you love her stuff, and also there's one poem by Browning that I like, but I just can't remember which one it is. I'll report!
  3. Melanie was the best <3 Such a kind, loving heart, always thinking good about other people. Edit: I just wanted to note that the novel also mentions Susan B. Anthony who was a prominent American civil rights leader and was particularly keen to promote women's rights.

    Ice Hockey

Yay for the new Finland's supporters (Sorry but I ain't going to root for US even if Finland doesn't win, I always root for Sweden if Finland's out) I've just heard that the Finnish women's team is heading for the finals, hurray!!! We'll be playing against US on Friday morning, I guess that Thursday night Vancouver time I don't usually watch women's hockey but I might watch this game
  5. Aww you
  6. Hello Reid and welcome to the forum! I'm sure you'll get loads of great recommendations, soon you'll hope you hadn't registered on here because you'll be spending all your money on books
  7. Yes it should, but will it?
  8. Got these today: Elizabeth Barrett Browning: Sonnets from the Portuguese and Other Poems Peter James: Dead Simple Rainer Maria Rilke: Letters to a Young Poet William Shakespeare: Complete Sonnets Kate Summerscale: The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, or the Murder at Road Hill House Amy Tan: The Opposite of Fate Kurt Vonnegut: Deadeye Dick Kurt Vonnegut: Timequake Jari Tervo: Pyhiesi yhteyteen Gloria Naylor: The Women of Brewster Place Toni Morrison: Jazz Daphne du Maurier: My Cousin Rachel E. M. Forster: Howards End The first 6 books are from play.com, the last 7 from the library (20 cents each, so only 1,40e for 7 books!)
  9. Here's finally the poem you have all been waiting for, and which I've tried to hunt down for maybe 5 years! Margaret Atwood: The Healer I do not wish to spend the rest of my time curing nosebleeds over the phone. Nobody here needs anyone raised from the dead, it's too confusing, with the notices already sent and so forth. Asthma and bruises, warts dissolved in moonlight, a touch and it's done. Anything worse and they'll call the doctor. Suffering is boring, though noticing this does not make it end. There are so many other things I could be doing with my hands: digging up the garden, digging up the garden again. Sometimes I think my life is over and there will be repetition but no more story. Only these compassions, which are also minor. I should be elsewhere, away from these neat farms, living among the people in dust-floored shacks who could still believe me. But I am old and lazy now. I know that being sick and being well are states of the soul, though I am losing ground, call it altitude, call it faith. The power is in me, but what for? What am I to do with my hands in this tidy place filled with those who do not want to be truly healed? Such arrogance, to have expected miracles. What was it anyway I thought flowed through me? Perhaps it was only a slight talent, this tinkering with the small breaks and fissures in other bodies, like a knack for crewel-work. Sundays I putter in the yard, arranging stones, raking grass, and the church-goers pass me, radiating their special hatreds. In the evenings I sit on the back porch in a stuffed chair covered with blue cloth printed with flowers, and look out across the ragged fields at the real flowers, goldenrod and purple asters, the light spilling out of them unasked for and unused.
  10. I got home today and found these books in the mail (ordered a week ago from play.com): - Elizabeth Barrett Browning: Sonnets from the Portuguese and Other Poems (Rory) - Peter James: Dead Simple - Rainer Maria Rilke: Letters to a Young Poet (Rory) - William Shakespeare: Complete Sonnets (Rory) - Kate Summerscale: The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, or the Murder at Road Hill House - Amy Tan: The Opposite of Fate (Rory) Then I went to the library to borrow Interlunar by Margaret Atwood and noticed these in the library clearance sale, each book for 20 cents only! I had to get them as they were only 1,40e, and the money goes to the library - Kurt Vonnegut: Deadeye Dick - Kurt Vonnegut: Timequake - Jari Tervo: Pyhiesi yhteyteen - Gloria Naylor: The Women of Brewster Place - Toni Morrison: Jazz - Daphne du Maurier: My Cousin Rachel - E. M. Forster: Howards End

    Ice Hockey

And naturally I'm supporting Finland! Any teams you definitely don't want to win? Who do you think might win? And when do the games start, I haven't even checked that out yet
  12. Like a sort of a Bible for being a better person? It's been long since I've read anything that has really inspired me to be a better person, I'm definitely due for improvement.
  13. I'm impressed by the cheekiness of the member(s) of the Mod Squad

I'm upping this thread, tis the Olympics hockey season Gather up, gather up!
  15. Helloooooo Bethany!

How are you this morning? :D I'm here to tell you, that it's that time of the year again... Ice hockey... Remember when you hated us last year for taking away ii from her off-topic threads and making her talk about hockey with us? Those were the days.... :giggle:

  16. I believe it was Ruth in her reading blog This book is now definitely something I want to read, I've already added it to my wishlist
  17. Ben, I'm impressed that you're impressed by the first Sookie book
  18. Well if you feel any better, my TBR is 246 books long, so you're still in the clear in my opinion
  19. Hm, well I just might give it a go then if it's not that graphic. I handle true crime books better than true crime graphic documents etc. Kylie, nice to hear
  20. Mr Whit, that video was soo funny The cat was like all
  21. Yep, but I started in the morning and finished at 7 PM, and I only had few breaks for eating and doing other life-maintening things. It's got to be the biggest reading stretches I've done, but I was determined to finish it, and I wanted to read it I started Ann Rule's If You Really Loved Me in bed. Mexicola, so glad you enjoyed Jane Eyre! And you're gonna have so much fun with the Eyre Affair, I promise! Edit: I'm heading home today and I've packed my backs*, and I can't believe how heavy they are. How can 16 newly acquired books weight so much Edit: Bags, not backs. I'm no hunchback for No Dame.
  22. I have to watch the movie! I thought I had it on my digibox and when I noticed the DVD in a store for only 5e, I thought I'll save me some money by not buying it. When I got home and checked out the digibox, of course I didn't have the movie I'm going to get it somewhere, I'm so eager to watch it! Regarding your Frank-spoiler, Katrina, so great to hear that you enjoyed the sequel, it gives me hope that it's not a total bummer
