  1. Desperate Housewives is just about to start but apparently they're taking another week's break next week so they're on in two weeks. Again!! I hate it!! Well, on the other hand, they're going to show 2 episodes of my most favorite series at the moment instead of the usual 1, covering the free spot
  2. I whole-heartedly agree. If the movies were made I'd never want to go and see them because Shadow of the Wind as a book is something that can't be translated into a novel, in my mind at least.
  3. Here's a thread for discussion on true crime titles
  4. Cool, I love wackiness and crazy characters and situations I'm very tempted now to go to the library and borrow it...
  5. Glad you liked it so much Emily, I pretty much agree with you on everything you said. Also, I remembered that Shadow of the Wind is one of the books that made me cry massive amounts. I nearly dehydrated.
  6. It does seem quite a short "book", what with all the fluffing it with pics and empty pages to make it look longer. And making long introductions which one might forget to read after reading the poem. But as long as it was on sale I might take a look at the poem online, thanks for the link! I'd feel a bit dubious though if I added it on the read-pile. I have the same problem with Rory's challenge, there's Allen Gingsburg's poem Howl on it, and while I could cross it off the list after reading it, I'd feel dishonest to add it on the read-list. Tricky! (That's just my personal opinion of course) What a good friend, s/he's definitely a keeper =) Happy browsing! Ah, don't feel silly! You know it's probably just because you have so many lists to update! You read one book, and unlike some of the others you don't have to just cross it off from TBR list, you also need to cross it off from other lists as well, such as the Rory list, 1001-list, dystopian challenge etc. The same goes for adding TBR books. No wonder if you make one tiny slip sometimes, no matter how much you enjoy updating the posts (I love it too, crossing off books from the lists as read titles feels so rewarding ) Oh boy oh boy! 6 weeks seems like such a short time. Where have all the months gone?? By the way, I loved your idea about you harassing that certain person down in Australia and me continuing the harassing in here, maybe if we put our plan to use immediately I'll be having them plane tickets before the fair?! (Can you believe it, he actually mentioned where he lives so now I can bomb his home address with "slight" hints??) Excellent idea, visiting the bookshops beforehand so you can concentrate totally on the book fair itself the weekend it's held I wonder if you're going to top my book buying numbers this weekend already...
  7. I remember a character in a TV-series enjoying the novel and that's about it. I remember the book was discussed in one of our lit classes but it wasn't obligatory reading material for the course so I never tried it. I'm going to, though, for various reasons. I know it's supposed to be a difficultish read but other than that I have no prejudices and I hope to like it.
  8. You're right. All you others can still do a group reading on it and I can read something else at that point. The book was just too tempting! I know what you mean, I had to draw a family tree for myself and I'm still a bit confused. And I'm mixing the surnames Linton and Earnshaw How is it possible when there aren't that many characters, it was easier to follow all the numerous Russian characters (with Russian names!) in Anna Karenina?!
  9. Nice to see you got some new books for your library Kylie I haven't heard of any of those titles before but The Rape of the Lock sounds appealing Wow, I didn't know you're up to something like that! Good job getting the reference books, hope you have great and exciting times reading them Way to go!
  10. Whatwhat whaat, I can't believe that of my best friend Wikipedia It's a real shame, the book not being what you were after and being a bad one as well. Read more of Wuthering Heights. Slowly but steady.
  11. It's only good that you haven't seen it before so you don't know what to expect I hope you enjoy it when you have the chance to read it! And sorry guys for reading it on my own, I now recall it was on the list of the books we agreed we could all venture together, I just couldn't wait to read it when I happened to notice it in the library I'm now on page 45 of Wuthering Heights and I'm enjoying it. However, as much as I like it, whenever I pick it up I feel I can't remember what happened in the last 10 pages or so and therefore I always need to browse through some of the previous pages to get the plot in my head again. It's rather annoying
  12. Hello Emily and welcome to the forum!
  13. Book 24. Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin I picked this one up purely because it's on the Rory Gilmore book list, but I also know the movie is a classic and I figured it would make a decent read. I've never watched the movie so I was unfamiliar with the story which definitely maybe it more enjoyable to read. I won't bother writing down the synopsis because some of you must have seen the movie and besides, the blurb on my edition gave away some of the details I would've liked to read in the story itself. The book is quite short (237 pages) and it's a really easy read and also very compelling: when I picked it up I couldn't bring myself to putting it down. I was rather surprised at how creepy the book was and how Levin was able to create this haunting atmosphere. Yikes! I was also kind of surprised at how quickly the book came to an end, and what the end result was. Overall a very gripping read for me at least, I had to give it 5/5.
  14. I've started reading Wuthering Heights today. I've never seen the movie, and this is my second attempt at the novel: the first one ended after 10 pages or so, it was years ago and I found it all rather confusing. This time I'm liking it so far but when the narrator and his housekeeper were talking about the different relations and connections between certain people I found it rather confusing and I had to draw a family tree for myself to help me remember it Then I figured I'd just have to read it and sort it all out in my head as the story moves along.
  15. Well that was a bummer in every way! How did it end up on your list of dystopian reads? Well I've only read 39 pages or so and I'm liking it so far, if not loving it. I think it's still early days to say anything decisive about it Some of us are reading the novel this month for a certain reading challenge we have, if you think you'd like to read the novel but need mental support for it you can join our ranks
  16. Hello Gemz and welcome to the forum!
  17. Morning Mac, you're up early! I'm good thanks, little stress with uni stuff but that's always the story with me until I manage to finish my thesis :D How've you been? I don't think we've crossed paths on the forum lately, which I guess means that we haven't been reading the same kinds of books. I've just started Wuthering Heights, I'm rather embarrassed that I've managed to neglect such a classic for so long. What are you reading?

  18. That doesn't sound like a delightful read at all. But like you said it's short, and then you'll never have to read it again You can also curse the book to your heart's content after you've finished I started reading Wuthering Heights.
  19. I'm interested in hearing what you think of it after you've finished, I bought the book rather spontaneously and I'm not that sure if it's really any good... Edit: Finished Rosemary's Baby last night, it was really great
  20. Hello Angie and welcome to the forum! You might want to take a look at this true crime -thread, there might be some ideas for you of what to read. I'd definitely recommend Ann Rule's Stranger Beside Me, it's about Ted Bundy. What makes it better than the other Ted Bundy books is that Ann Rule actually knew Ted Bundy herself, she used to work with him on a crisisline, not knowing that all the while he was "doing his thing". Have you read Chelsea Cain's Gretchen Lowell -series? (Heartsick, Sweetheart and Evil At Heart) They're horrific but excellent. And how about Jeff Lindsay's Dexter novels?
  21. Happy Birthday Purple Poppy! :)

  22. I agree about UtS, I had no idea at the beginning of the novel what it would all turn out to be. It was freaky but freakishly good TCPatW must be really good if you're making faster progress with it than with a book with fewer pages, I think it's very encouraging to hear. Happy reading! I hope it's good and you'll enjoy it, that one's on my TBR
  23. I'd read that he would have a new book out at some point during 2010 but I didn't know it's been published already. I read the blurb and it sounds like it's right up my alley, I wants the book! Thanks for the info, this one's going on my wishlist, pronto!
  24. Under the Skin was really gripping wasn't it, the story unfolded itself slowly and the more I got to know about what was going on the more creepy it was. A very great read indeed! I'm glad you're enjoying The Crimson Petal and the White as well, I'll look forward to hearing your thoughts on it when you've finished it. It's quite a long read, aye? I have it on my TBR but the size of it seems really daunting.
