Has anyone read The Library of Shadows by Mikkel Birkegaard? I did a search on the title but there were no specific threads on it, it only showed that some people have possibly mentioned the book in their reading blogs and it would take me quite some time to browse through all of them. Uh oh Well it's my first time reading the book and I've heard some people on here say that they didn't enjoy it (as much) the first time around and they've learnt to appreciate it more each time they re-read it. I certainly don't want to get a bollocking from the WH fans just because my view of it made you not want to read it But I have to admit, at this point the book seems very overrated to me I hope you like The Lovely Bones It's really sad right from the get go but it's also really captivating. As for the forum being quiet, I hope people were too busy reading for once On my part I can say that BF was visiting and we had to share my old PC since his and my laptops are both broken at the mo. Very annoying! I bought that book last summer, the blurb was really chilling! I'm glad that it's bringing your mojo back! Looking forward to your review Mac!

Wow, 10/10! Glad you liked the novel so much, I cannot wait to read it myself If you're interested in Sylvia Plath, you might want to check out Ronald Hayman's biography of her, The Death and Life of Sylvia Plath. I found it a really eye-opening book about Plath.

Yes, that usually does it Another translational issue that came to mind is the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. He plays with words so much and so cunningly that it's just impossible to get everything translated, which is why I'll never even try and read the books in Finnish. It's certainly not the translator's fault; it just simply cannot be done. Sure there are translations but it's not the same.

Although I'm not sure if the others would agree on what I said, I'm pretty sure they are less neurotic and more liberal book challenge doers

I have to say this even at the risk of sounding like a complete tightass: As much as I want everyone who's able and willing to join in on the group readings, I do personally wish that the books that are going to be read at a given time would be selected by the people who are actually following the whole Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge. My reasoning for this is that if more and more people will pick up on the challenge and will want to read some of the novels from the list without wanting to do the actual challenge, the more difficult it gets each time to pick a book that would be suitable for most of the people. So far it's been easy to pick the books because there aren't that many of us and the two books that we've done so far have been agreed on by nearly all of us each time. This is just MHO, and I do hope that no one takes it personally and/or the wrong way And that's only my views on the selecting process, I do wish that as many people as possible would be interested in reading the books that are chosen each time.

I'm not quite sure how you got that idea from my previous post? Not that Finnish isn't a complicated language to learn, but I was merely pointing out some errors in translations, or rather just the one that I've always found funny as heck! Maybe I explained it poorly. I mean, a baby doll pyjamas (or maybe a baby doll nightgown, it doesn't really make a difference) is just a term for the style of the outfit, the pieces of clothing don't actually have anything to do with a baby or a doll. And the Finnish translation was the Finnish equivalents of 'baby', 'doll' and 'pyjamas' put together as one word. That's so weird to me, I don't even know that song and it always takes me ages to realise that no you're not talking about some Manson song but a Beatles song Quite true, but I'm usually too busy to hunt down other books to borrow and read (or to put in the closet to be read). When Nollaig asked me about The Neon Bible I wikied Toole and noticed that there's actually a biography of him called Ignatius Rising: The Life of John Kennedy Toole. It sounded intriguing, it's going on my wishlist. Things like 'baby doll pyjamas' are really, really rare, that was definitely the worst translation I've ever come across with and it was so bad it was corny and I wouldn't have changed it for another edition for the world. I was upset for King's sake but I got too much fun out of it. For me, noticing a bad translation begins when you realise that you're actually thinking about the translation rather than going with the plot and the flow of the book. A really good translation does not make you think about the translation itself for one minute. In my opinion, you know you've got a bad translation on your hands when you start noticing the phrases and know exactly what the English version says, and the translator has translated that straight into Finnish without bothering to think if the phrase sounds Finnish at all. I wish I could remember an example for you guys.
