  1. Great progress Athena! If you don't feel like reading all your loans, maybe you could just ignore the ones you don't want to read now and go for something you truly want to read? Reading's no fun if you have to force yourself. Do you have a particular book in mind that you really want to start? My progress for Friday: 60 pages of Blackbird Sings at Dusk. Not all that much, but I was tired after work and I'm not enjoying the book as much as I did before. I can't wait to finish it and start something else!
  2. Ooooh fun! I shan't think of my replies too much, I'll just wing it. Thanks Kylie for the template! If that's the word. A — Author You’ve Read The Most Books From: I can't be sure but I'm fairly certain that it's Anni Polva, who wrote the Finnish girls' book series Tiina, which I loved as a kid. She also wrote a number of chick lit books, some of which I've read. They are a bit dated, but rather darling anyways. B — Best Sequel Ever: Without thinking too much, Dexter Is Delicious by Jeff Lindsay. C — Currently Reading: Look Me In the Eye by John Elder Robison and Blackbird Sings at Dusk by Linda Olsson D — Drink of Choice While Reading: I don't usually drink anything while reading, but I'll say water or coffee. E — E-Reader or Physical Book?: Physical book! F — Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Dated in High School: Does this mean I would've wanted to date him or I would've probably dated him even though it would've been no good? Never mind... No one come to mind anyways! G — Glad You Gave this Book a Chance: Peyton Place comes to mind at first H — Hidden Gem Book: What does this even mean... I'll say She Who Remembers by Linda Lay Shuler as I totally love the book and I think it's amazing and I wish more people would read it, but nobody ever does. I'll also mention the Shadow-series by Maria Gripe, and that one is a hidden gem because it's not been translated into English I — Important Moment in Your Reading Life: The times when I got my library cards. And when I found this forum. J — Just Finished: Veljen vaimo by Henna Helmi Heinonen. Finnish chick-lit. K – Kinds of Books You Won’t Read?: I'm trying to think of a genre and then I keep coming up with books within those genres that I have read or have on my TBR or wishlist. I guess I'll say Harlequins. But I do enjoy other sort of fluff! L – Longest Book You’ve Read: Quite possibly Anna Karenina or Gone with the Wind. M — Major Book Hangover: The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon N — Number of Bookshelves You Own: Number of bookshelves I'm currently renting from landlord: 22 O — One Book You’ve Read Multiple Times: The first one that came to mind was In Her Shoes by Jennifer Weiner. P — Preferred Place to Read: Bed. Q — Quote that Inspires You and Gives You All the Feels: I'm bad with quotes. R — Reading Regret: Alchemist by Paulo Coelho S — Series You’ve Started and Need to Finish: The Lincoln Rhyme series by Jeffery Deaver! T — Three of Your All Time Favorite Books: The Shadow of the Wind, A Tale of Two Cities, The Art of Racing in the Rain U – Unapologetic Fangirl/boy for: Augusten Burroughs V — Very Excited for this Release More than Anything: I'm bad at keeping up with new releases W — Worst Bookish Habit Borrowing more than I can read. X — X Marks the Spot – Start at the top of your shelf and pick the 27th book off it: The Lies We Told by Diane Chamberlain Y — Your Latest Book Purchase: There's six of them The one that I put in my basket at the end of today's shopping tour was Charlotte Street by Juliette Mead. Z — The Zzzzzzzzzzzzz Snatcher Book (Book That Kept You From Sleeping): I can't think of any, but a Lincoln Rhyme book probably!
  3. It's such odd weather, for the past few days, it's so humid! I've felt so drained. It's like there's electricity in the air... I feel like I can't think straight! Anyhow, yep, I went to the Red Cross charityshop. At first glance, I saw loads of bookshelves and was thrilled, and decided to first check the shelves that were on the wall, and then come back to the other ones. Should've checked the others first, as it turned out that all the non-fiction and comics and the miscellaneous stuff I'm not interested in was stacked on those bookcases... Anyhow, I was a bit disappointed by the (small) number of English titles, but hey, it meant I didn't have to spend as much money and bring as many books home I got a novel by Marie Desplechin, and it was titled Sans Moi (Without Me). I don't know if it's been translated into English. I liked the premise of the novel and I have a thing for modern French stuff, so I bought the book on a whim. 2€. Then I got a copy of the 1931-1934 diary by Anaïs Nin which was missing from my collection, yay! Also for 2€. They also had a 4 paperbacks for 1€ -deal, to celebrate the opening of the charityshop. I went over the paperbacks and first saw Timoleon Vieta Come Home by Dan Rhodes, which was a great find and which I took to mean I was meant to buy 4 paperbacks. Then I saw a Finnish copy of Running with Scissors, and I thought, if I don't find 3 other paperbacks that I'll want for myself, I'll get the RwS for my Boss, who now loves Augusten Burroughs. And then I saw a copy of The Collector by John Fowles, which I've been wanting to re-read for a while now! And then, for the fourth book, I got Charlotte Street by Juliette Mead. Sounded fun enough. 6 books! 5€. Not bad! Edit: Acquired books 39. Read TBR books 4. Shite!
  4. I used to buy a lot more, but my TBR was getting out of control... I prefer having a number of TBR books which I think I can tackle before I die... That depends... Do you mean a murder mystery or more of a general mystery? Good to hear you liked The Lies We Told! The book was likened to a Jodi Picoult novel, according to the cover. Would you agree? My TBR is never going down... But sometimes the urge to go into a secondhand bookshop / charityshop is too big! One must live a little, and splurge... Ooooh, the cows have finally come home! My reading is indeed at a good place at the moment, and for some reason I've just felt like I deserved a bit of book shopping this week I've been very good for so long, and it's not healthy to starve oneself! BTW, good to see you on the forum, poppyshake! It's been a while, and it feels like it's been ages!!!
  5. Am at work, quick post: new Red Cross charityshop opened at Itis, saw it when shopping for boos. Many books! Must visit after work Edit: obviously not shopping for boos, nor booze. Boss
  6. I'm sorry to hear you didn't like it at all, having liked the book very much myself. But they can't all be winners, to each and everyone of us. Better luck with your next read Edit: Almost forgot: I started reading The Blackbird Sings at Dusk by Linda Olsson yesterday. I think Linda Olsson was all the rage back in 2012 when I was working at the library... This is my first book by her. It's going really fast but I'm not sure I would highly recommend it...
  7. Okay, I understand. I hope you can join next month, at least! There's no harm in that But no pressure, of course!
  8. Even if you don't want to read the book fast, don't you want to join by recording your page count? The more the merrier! Edit: It's not always about the most pages read, you could record the hours you spend reading the book, even if you stop mid-page and ponder for fifteen minutes Who cares if you don't read that many pages as you normally would, with a quicker book!
  9. Great going, Athena I'll be taking part if the weather stays rainy. My progress so far: Thursday: 166 pages of The Blackbird Sings at Dusk by Linda Olsson
  10. I went to a charityshop yesterday, and a flea market today, and came home with the following: Books: - The Lies We Told by Diane Chamberlain - The Dirty Streets of Heaven by Tad Williams (added this on my wishlist after reading Timstar's review) - Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey - Kill the Dead by Richard Kadrey - Nenäpäivä by Mikko Rimminen (a Finnish award-winning novel that I've read before and really liked) Movies: - Stranger Than Fiction - Rööperi (a Finnish movie which I've seen and loved) I've now acquired 34 books, which is only three short of 37, which is my last year's total for acquired books...
  11. July - summary 32 - The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams - library loan 3/5 - Our Endless Numbered Days by Claire Fuller - library loan - had to take back to the library before I was able to read it, as someone had reserved the copy - Beside Myself by Ann Morgan - library loan - abandoned - couldn't get into it. Will give it another go at some other point. 33 - Upstairs Downstairs by John Hawkesworth - TBR book 4/5 34 - Kevyesti kipsissä by Veera Vaahtera - library loan 4/5 - The Butcher's Hook by Janet Ellis - library loan - abandoned - couldn't get into it. Will give it another go at some other point. 35 - Onnellisesti eksyksissä by Veera Vaahtera - library loan 4/5 36 - Sattumalta sinun by Veera Vaahtera - library loan 4/5 37 - Rakkautta, vahingossa by Veera Vaahtera - library loan 4/5 - Jane of Lantern Hill by L. M. Montgomery - library loan - abandoned - liked it while I was reading it, but lost the plot when I opted for something more chick litty A very good month ratings-wise! I'm also happy that I read so many books, having had worse months recently. I read a lot of books in Finnish, by a Finnish author, and that was really refreshing
  12. I hope you don't put them all in just one, though? Sorry, I couldn't resist! I always used to keep my tomatoes in the fridge, too! Then my flatmate who's a cook told me that they are best kept on the counter, otherwise they'd lose their taste and stuff.
  13. Hello there, stranger! Welcome to the forum!
  14. Oh I'm sure I will be able to spend it alright I just want to buy something I really, really want! I don't want to get just 'any old thing'. I want it to be a good book(s) that I'll treasure the rest of my life. Which is a difficult task if I buy books that I haven't yet read
  15. Hello and welcome to the forum!
  16. I'm delighted by this! Also, I've really liked Gillian Flynn's books and would totally like to hear what you think of her books. I searched the forum and we do not have an already existing thread for the author but we do have a thread for Gone Girl over here if you want to check it out. Feel free to post your thoughts of the novel in there! Also, you could start your own reading log if you wanted to...
  17. I hope it will live up to your possible expectations! I personally really liked it. Wish I could read it for the first time.
  18. Must confess, I hadn't even heard of Stranger Things I don't think it's on telly over here I've now started the 7th season of Modern Family. When I started re-watching the series, I thought I'd only seen the first two seasons but turns out I'd seen pretty much all episodes from the first five seasons and some from the sixth. At least the 7th season is all new to me! I'm looking forward to seeing how things go. Regarding a few certain characters, especially. What a great series!! Thanks Kylie for watching it and making me watch it, too
  19. Reading the fifth Finnish chick-lit book in a row
  20. Can't say that I've read any of the books you have, so don't know what to comment on those, per se However, glad to hear you're still reading books! Has the not counting of read books and not writing reviews of them been fun? Has it been liberating? I hope it has
  21. The library is totally a beast! I go look at their new acquired books list online every week and make too many reservations. I always borrow more than I can read But hey, at least we are supporting the libraries! I'm glad I'm not the only one who's bought more books than they've read off their TBR pile I'm in good company! Another worrying thing I just realized: I still have the 30€ gift card for the big bookstore downtown. I've been there a few times but they've been under construction/renovation and so my visits have been short, and another time they had a sale but had more books in Swedish than in English I wish I was only tempted by Finnish and Swedish literature, it would be so much easier for me Anyhow... I have less than 4 months to spend that money. I was kind of tempted to buy a copy of The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows, but the quality of the paper on the paperback was rather poor, as the lines were visible on the next page and stuff. But I would've preferred that copy to the huge, big ass hardback I have borrowed from the library...
  22. Hello and welcome to the forum! I think I read The Girl on the Train last summer, and really liked it. I read Disclaimer by Renee Knight a bit before that, and I felt the books were similar in a sense - in which sense, I won't say, so as not to spoil anything. I'd heartily recommend Disclaimer If you are looking for other great thrillers / crime novels, I'd recommend Karin Slaughter's, Jeffery Deaver's and Linwood Barclays novels. The Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay is also really great, but it's really gruesome and I don't know if you prefer less graphic stuff. Feel free to ask for more recs if you wish! And there's also the particular section for this particular genre on here, I'd suggest you take a look around I hope you like it here!
  23. Life's just been in the way, and it's been too stressful... I'm not sure even the most promising book could've enticed you at this point! Sometimes life is what it is and reading takes a backseat, unfortunately. It's not great, but what can one do. It's not fun to force one's reading... Reading should always be a pleasure, not a chore. I hope you'll find better and more relaxing times ahead of you, to catch up on your reading (and to catch up on some serenity in your life)!
  24. Oooh this is delicious I'm sure we all have added books to our wishlist recently... I've not physically added anything on my wishlist on that particular post on my reading log in ages, but I have many titles scribbled down on pieces of paper. The one recent addition that first came to mind is The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows. I can't remember any other ones at the moment, although I'm sure there are loads.
  25. Oh, that must be horrible! You have my deepest sympathies Thank you for posting pictures! You have a lot of titles there What I really like about the shelves is that... there's also room for more books
