  1. I finished Down to the Bone and started reading Albert Camus's The Outsider since I have two hours before I need to go. It's a short novel so I figured I could pick it up.
  2. Karen Harper's Down to the Bown is getting pretty chilling, I have 30 pages left. I don't think I'll have time for other bookish activities this weekend
  3. I've already read it once before, but I loved it so much that I want to reread it and own it as I know I'll go back to it from time to time. Such a funny, enchanting novel, Kinsella's best in my opinion I should finish Gone with the Wind by this weekend, but I don’t want it to end! It's an amazing novel isn't it, once you get it going. We did a mini reading group on this a few months ago, I loved the novel and was really sad when it ended. Maybe you'll want to read the sequel, Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley? I've not read it yet myself but I have it on my TBR. There's also Donald McCaig's Rhett Butler's People, which is apparently written from Rhett's perspective. Enjoy
  4. Ach, so you're having a case of the serious series reading bout I thought you'd be finished with those books by now, but now that I know that there are various series you're reading, and some contain 18/19 books, I have a better understanding for your current recreational readings I'd love to have a go with the Laurell K. Hamilton books but they don't have them in the library, I've checked many many times, and I shouldn't buy any more books before I've read some off my mount TBR Happy reading
  5. What do you mean 'more', I've only just begun... The Ring of Fire will be left alone, I won't be venturing with it in a long while, I can tell you that much. Oh ****, are you sure you want to wait half a month? Well I think we're both off the hook this time, I think it's better this way. What have you been buying btw, missus? It seems like it's been ages since you and I have been reading the same books, doesn't it :/
  6. I bought Sophie Kinsella's Twenties Girl for a reading group on another book forum, and for my own pleasure
  7. Now that you mention it, it does sound like a description of this place
  8. Nah, I'm not disappointed, I'm proud of the method you chose and that you've stuck to it Too bad you didn't get much reading done though I've kept on going with Karen Harper, it's an interesting thriller about an Amish woman, I find the Amish ever so intriguing.
  9. Does he have Finnish blood in him by any chance? The last name is Finnish I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'll be expecting to hear which books made it to your list on account of the book Here here!! Broken?? Which novel is this? A new one I hope?
  10. I didn't know it was out yet either, I thought it wouldn't be released until next month. I'm glad I preordered the thing so it came as a total surprise You know, I haven't read the fourth Dexter novel yet... The third one was such a disappointment that I didn't feel like continuing on to the fourth novel and decided to wait til it was time the fifth one got published. So now I've got to read it asap. And, I'm in the beginning of Karen Harper's Down to the Bown. And, it's Ilosaarirock festival this weekend, I dare say I won't get to the Dexters before next week Are you gonna order the book now straight away? I hope we'll love it
  11. Maureen, Grishamish Deaver sounds... intriguing? CaliLily, I've already read the Kathy Reichs books but they're awesome and I want to collect them all because I'll be rereading them in the future Ooshie, you like Deaver? Awesome Yay, I just got the latest Dexter novel in the mail, I'm really excited
  12. Hurray!!! I just received the latest Dexter book in the mail It arrived as a total surprise, I thought the book wasn't due for another month! Yaaaaayyyyy Delicious, should I say??
  13. Sure I want to know about swimming and stuff  I was at my cousin's wedding this weekend and that's why I've been offline and haven't replied to you message yet. And I don't have time to reply it now either, I'm off to bed and will be getting up early to do my voluntary Ilosaarirock festival duties tomorrow, so I'll get a free ticket to the festival itself. I'll have to write you later :)

How was your weekend and how've you and the missus been? :)

  14. vodkafan, brutality is indeed necessary. I managed to find 20 books I want to get rid of and I think that's a pretty good number, I'm happy. I was in Helsinki this weekend, at my cousin's wedding, and I had some time to go to this huge mall for a couple of hours and I visited a secondhand bookshop. What great finds I made! I got these: Elizabeth Gaskell: Mary Barton Kathy Reichs: Grave Secrets Kathy Reichs: D
  15. What movie was that? Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde?
  16. http://www.riemurasia.net/jylppy/media.php?id=72308 Cat does not like.
  17. I kind of figured that this was the case. That you wouldn't go and rush to buy a Hoeg book because of your respectable mount TBR but I also figured you wouldn't totally abstain from his novels if you were to hear absolutely great things about one of his books or another I happen to own one of his books already and it would really do me good to keep up my Swedish skills so it's easier for me to explore more of his stuff Rest assured, I didn't think you absolutely hated it or anything like that
  18. vodkafan, I know, I've been thinking about going to one of those adult classes where grown up people learn how to swim. I mean I do know how to swim a bit, I can keep myself above the waterline, but I panic the minute I know my feet can't touch the ground. And I hate it when I can't see what's in the dark waters. Hey, I'm 28 Maybe this is the year to do it. I've started both gym and zumba which are totally new territory for me so why not learn and swim? When I go to UK maybe I'll go to the swimming pool with CW and the kids and learn there. And it's not just myself to whom I owe it to learn to swim, it's my future kids and grandchildren as well.
  19. G'day mate! Glad you found us, I hope you enjoy the forum
  20. I've now realised that while it's a good thing for the reasons I explained in my previous post, there are also other repercussions to it...
  21. Thanks joe Helsinki Pride 2010 is already over but I quite like the gay pride man myself, he's so cheerful and cunning-looking, I've decided to keep him a little longer
  22. Pamela Anderson?? I've heard rumours they're planning on getting her and she is interested I'd love it!!
  23. Yes, poor Peter is who we're talking about. Did Smilla really have that kind of effect on you? Personally I'd hate to give him up just based on that one single book, it's so rare to find promising Danish authors. I'm sure there are loads but he's one of the few I know.
  24. I'm quite sure it was The Complete Oxford something, so I suppose it might be The Complete Oxford English Dictionary Haha, that should definitely be on the list. Do you think Rory read it religiously, from start to finish?? If she did, so should we! I completely understand what you mean. You are taught those words in school right from the get go, they don't go and bother to tell you about each and every single word where they come from. That would take ages! To me, as a non-native, though, words like 'dachshund' and 'schadenfreude' are so obviously non-English, because I've learnt them in my German classes first, and then I've come across them in English. Our uni professor even talked about the word 'schadenfreude' in one of our classes and I found it peculiar that you wouldn't have a word of your own for it. I guess the English speakers are not naturally keen on 'malicious pleasure', which is the English equivalent for the Finnish 'vahingonilo', 'schadenfreude' in my dictionary
  25. I think I already mentioned a few reasons in my first post which answered all the questions..? All in all, I was interested in the detective novel aspect and the whole Copenhagen meets Greenland and Eskimos aspect, and I liked a lot of the characters or was at least very interested to get to know them a bit better. However, at some point the style of the writing, in all the technical parts about ships and such and such started to get to me. I'm scared of water and can't swim and I think that my not enjoying the ship part of the story has a bit to do with that. And in hindsight, Smilla went all Jane Bond on us while she was aboard, didn't she? I guess I just like it when stories have more to do with people and are written from a people-focused perspective, not the machine one. Edit: I hope this thread won't be closed after a few weeks, because I still would like to try and read all the other comments other people have made, maybe I'll get rid of my dislike for the book later one and will comment more. That's not a promise though!
