  1. We've been renovating our house, so I like to buy home renovation magazines for ideas: Home Beautiful, Belle, House and Garden. I also enjoy cooking, so I often pick up a cooking magazine when I'm at the grocery store.

    Hello

    Hello and Welcome.
  3. Hi Loopyloo, It's funny you should mention that my forum name sounds calming to you; most os my family and friends are always commenting, on how calm and unflustered I always seem. In fact I think I may sound a little too calm, because nobody ever seems to be able to tell when I'm stressed or angry; it can be incredibly frustrating at times.

  4. Try not to worry too much about the packing, I'm sure it will come together once you are on holidays; it's amazing what you can achieve in a short space of time. I once had to pack an entire household for six in less than a week. Yes! I was extremely stressed at the time, didn't sleep, and was completely exhausted afterwards, but I did it.

Have thought about painting your new house yourself? I've painted two houses in the past few years, and I've found it to be hard work but very rewarding; it can be especially fun when you rope friends and family into helping. (Of course you have to bribe everyone with a constant supply of good music, pizza and drinks)

  7. I've never participated in a book challenge before, but this one really appeals to me, Echo, it sounds interesting. I had a quick look at your list of books, and the selection you've put together is great. I would really like to join you when you read: A Room of One's Own by Virgina Woolf Orlando by Virgina Woolf On the road by Jack Kerouac Howl by Allen Ginberg Please let me know when you get to these books.
  8. Hi Kylie, this is the saddest story, if it makes you feel any better, I also had to wait a very long time before getting my dog, Rufus. My husband always felt strongly that the kids needed to be older before we got a dog.

How is your preparation going for the move? You must be getting excited?

  9. The Old Man and the Sea is a wonderful book, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm a bit of a Hemingway fan, I love his simplistic writing style. If your interested in reading more Hemingway, may I suggest A Farwell to Arms, it is my most favourite of his work.
  10. Hi Loopyloo, I have to say I do like your name. Are you anything like your name suggests? Your Paddy reminds me very much of our Rufus, like Paddy he's very big (weighing in at 42kg), loveable and full of mischief. He also loves to jump on my bed, especially when I'm reading - I like to call this our bonding time.

I know you can't replace Paddy, he holds such a special place in your heart, but do you think you might get another dog eventually?

  11. Hi Kylie, I've noticed that we have similar tastes in books, music and films, so I thought I'd pop in and say hello.

  12. Hi loopyloo, I have just discovered your message, I thought I would pop in and say hello. Yes, our dog is very cute and we love him dearly, his name is Rufus. You said you used to have a dog, he sounded lovely, you must miss him very much.

  15. I really enjoyed reading your review, FreeWheeling Andy. I think I will recommend this book to my husband, as he did Russian Studies at University, and is quite interested in the subject.

    Hello and Welcome.
  17. Animal Farm - George Orwell To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne Romeo and Juliet - Shakespeare Lots of Australian bush poets - Henry Lawson, Henry Kendall - which I absolutely hated, and never ever want to read again in my life time.
  18. Hi Janet, I would like suggest that you give Schindler's Arc a go, or at least a couple of chapters before putting it down. Thomas Keneally is one of Australia's most highly regarded authors, and Schindler's Arc actually won the Booker Prize in 1982. I don't think it would be an easy read as the subject matter would be quite confronting. I personally have not read Schindler's Arc, but it is a novel I would like to read sometime in the future.
  19. When I was 18 my father gave me the complete works of John Steinbeck, as a gift for starting university. I love these books dearly, and would never part with them.
  20. To Kill a Mocking Bird is one of my all-time favourite books, every few years I like to reread it, just to experience the magic all over again. I am currently reading Anna Karenina, and loving it, it is one of the most stunningly beautiful novels that I have ever read. It has taken me awhile to plough through this one, as it is quite long.

  25. Thanks Kylie for sharing how you discovered the John Marsden series. One of my girls has not been much of a reader until her sister introduced her to this series. Now she can't put a book down, which is great! As a mum, it's always wonderful when your children find books that capture their imagination, and continues to nurture their love of reading. After reading how much you still enjoy this series as a adult, I think I will put these books on my TBR pile. It would be so much fun to be able to share these books with my girls. P.S. I told the twins about the Ellie Chronicles and they were very excited to have something to continue on with.
