    Room by Emma Donoghue

    Synopsis:

To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world. . . . It's where he was born, it's where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.

Room is home to Jack, but to Ma it's the prison where she has been held for seven years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in this eleven-by-eleven-foot space. But with Jack's curiosity building alongside her own desperation, she knows that Room cannot contain either much longer.

Room is a tale at once shocking, riveting, exhilarating--a story of unconquerable love in harrowing circumstances, and of the diamond-hard bond between a mother and her child

    Thoughts:

Wow, what a book! Loved the first half, was hoping for a little more from the second half, but overall it was a great read. I highly recommend it.

  2. I have the Valley of the Dolls on my shelf waiting to be read, sounds like a great guilty pleasure read! :)

Me too. In fact, I've had Valley of the Dolls on my tbr for years. Yes, years! I'm glad you liked it Erin; your review has encouraged me to bump it up the list a bit!

I hope you both enjoy it! =)

  3. Room was my favorite book last year, I hope you enjoy it! Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Book Thief are also awesome. And The Art of Racing in the Rain is pure gold, that's an amazing book. Have some Kleenex near by when you read it!

frankie, I actually have you to thank for my purchase of The Art of Racing in the Rain. You recommended it to me about two years ago after reading my review of Marley and Me. Hopefully I get around to reading it before another two years passes. ;)

I felt the same way about Gone With The Wind. It was so big I couldn't face reading it for ages. Finally picked it up last year, and loved it. And even though it was such a long novel, I honestly don't think any of it needed to be cut out. The film is long too - about 4 hours - but well worth watching.

The Art of Racing in the Rain is an AMAZING book. I totally agree with Frankie, it's just a fabulous read. Ditto The Book Thief - terrific. I loved Breakfast at Tiffanys too. Different from the film, but just as enjoyable. (And I have The Hunger Games trilogy on the Kindle, but am saving those for holiday). I hope you enjoy the other three as much as I did :)

Thanks, Ruth, I'm sure I will! Oh, and I loved the movie too, but as always, the book was better.

Room & The Book Thief are two of my faves....you'll love them :D

That's one awesome book haul, bookworm! The Book Thief, Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Hunger Games are all among my favourite books. :) I really enjoyed Room too.

Sounds like you have some great reads coming up -- I agree with the majority: "Room" was definitely my favorite of last year, and "The Book Thief" and "THG" were both reads I really enjoyed, also! I'm kinda jealous you get to start at the beginning with all of these.

After all the positive comments I've heard about Gone with the Wind, I think I'll probably make it my next read.

You are in for such a treat with these two books. I read The Art of Racing in the Rain a short while ago, and absolutely loved it. Cried buckets, but it's so uplifting. And of course, The Book Thief is just wonderful as well. Very well written, and it just tugs at the heartstrings. I hope you enjoy them.

So happy to know you all loved reading the books I purchased. I'm looking forward to reading them even more now!

bobblybear, I'm so happy to see that you've decided to read Gone with the Wind. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.

I'm 100 pages into Room and enjoying it.

  4. I look forward to your thoughts on Valley of the Dolls, which I have on my TBR pile.

It was a tad depressing, but I couldn't put the book down. I'd definitely recommend it.

Just started "Anna Karenina" on the train this morning. :)

I've wanted to read this book forever, yet I never get around to starting it.

Finished The White Tiger. Now I'm trying to decide between The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton or The End Specialist by Drew Magary. Gone With The Wind keeps tempting me as well, but I'm not in the mood for a long read.

I put off reading Gone with the Wind so many times because its size scared me. I finally took the plunge and read it two summers ago and now its my all time favorite. It was so captivating that you completely forget you're reading a 1,000 page book. Hope you enjoy whichever one you choose. =)

I started Room by Emma Donoghue. I also received a few books I ordered.

    I got:

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote

The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann

    Synopsis:

Dolls: red or black; capsules or tablets; washed down with vodka or swallowed straight - for Anne, Neely, and Jennifer, it doesn't matter, as long as the pill bottle is within easy reach. These three women become best friends when they are young and struggling in New York City and then climb to the top of the entertainment industry - only to find that there's no place left to go but down - into the Valley of the Dolls.

    Thoughts:

This was my weekend guilty pleasure. It was enjoyable, funny, and ultimately heartbreaking. I actually felt pretty sad for a bit after finishing it, but I'd still recommend it as a good read.

  6. Pretty picture! I'm really glad you're enjoying the book. I might have to bump it up my TBR pile. :) I also bought the movie recently, but haven't watched it yet. Have you seen it? It's supposed to be pretty good.

Thanks, Kylie! No, I've never seen the movie, and I've heard mix reviews, so you'll have to let me know what think after you get around to watching it.

Do you take the pictures of the books you are reading/have read yourself? I love them all :smile2: Really beautiful! I love it how you (?) have used a pale blue/gray square background on which the actual picture is set, and the picture has rounded edges. Awesome :)

frankie, yes, I take all the pictures with my iPhone and then I use the Instagram app to edit how the pic looks. I'm glad you enjoy them!

  7. 28. The Paris Wife - Paula McLain

The Paris Wife tells the story of Ernest Hemmingway's first wife Hadley and the eventual breakdown of their marriage. Set in 1920s Paris and featuring many of the eras influential writers (eg Ezra Pound), it is a wonderful story. I really felt for Hadley and couldn't help but feel she was better off without Ernest. The writing is beautiful and really transports you there. My only problem was that it was a little bit slow in places.

    4/5

I've seen this book around, but I had no idea it was about Hemingway's first wife. I'll definitely be adding this to my tbr pile. Thanks!

  8. I've been reading more of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society - I love it!

I got a new bookcase yesterday and have put it together. :)

Kylie, another bookcase?! I'm so jealous! Anyway, so happy to see you're enjoying The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. I read it last year and absolutely loved it!

I'm about half way through Valley of the Dolls. Hopefully I'll be able to finish it today or tomorrow. I'd really like to start Room by Emma Donoghue this week while I'm off from work. Definitely sounds like it's a book I should be reading during the day instead of my usual routine of reading before bed.
