Hi Madcow! I cried RIVERS!! I am a real animal lover and I also get soppy over the Disney Cartoons (eg The Lion King). As it is a true story, my husband couldn't even comfort me by saying that it was on a story. This book and this amazing,kind dog will stay with me forever (especially the part where he stays with John's wife when she came home from her miscarriage and just her cry into his fur.....) I have like that. Got to go, I can feel myself welling up......

I am on my 9th book to date, which is very slow for me. It is because I am so busy at work - too busy to sit and read for half an hour at lunchtime. With the better weather, I am going to make sure I take my hour and sit in the sun with my book!! My favourites so far are: Marley & Me by John Grogan The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Currently reading 'The Remains of the Day' by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Millie is the most literate feline I know - even beating Samuel Johnsons' cat (in my humble opinion!) She will read with me tonight after having been out all day sunning herself whilst I am at work!! Funnily enough, Millie always knows when I am reading The Bible. She comes right up to it and purrs ( I am not joking). Once she was so happy, she dribbled on it, but I couldn't get cross with her as it was an accident and she is getting on a bit. She always rubs the hard cover of my Bible, but never ever does that to any other hard cover book I have. A very clever, well read and learned cat indeed!!

Hi Millie and I have 'The Book Thief', 'Rebecca' and 'My Family and Other Animals' as well as 'Catch me a Columbus' on our TBR List, so well done!! I studied 'To Kill A Mockingbird' for GCSE and I absolutely loved that book. I want to read it again. The depth of the book, the message and the way it was written has always amazed me. When I read Millie your email she did lick her lips at the mention of Tish I have nearly earned 1 credit for finishing my 3rd book from my Mount TBR. ( Wooooo-Hoooooooo)

Hello Again!!! Millie and I had to try about 12 times (no joking!!) to get into Emma, but we were determined to read it and we are glad that we were not defeatist. We found from Chapter 4 or 5 onwards it rapidly picked up pace and wit etc. But, it is horses for courses. How boring if we were all the same!! My husband hated Catcher in the Rye, too. I thought I would not like either, the way he went on and on about it:lol:, but I really enjoyed it. Millie has asked for recommendations from you, if you purrrlease:lol:

Often, when I read in the evening I stop for a cup of tea - or top up and I will look at the bookshelves. I often plan in my mind which book I will read next whilst drinking my tea. If I am 'stuck' in a particular genre that I want to continue reading then that often helps me choose either from my bookcase/coffee table/under the bed/wardrobe/desk etc etc. or my list Every year on New Years' Day, I write a list of books that I want to read that year (very odd, I know! and I slowly try and work my way through the list, but not necessarily in order. Obviously, I start with the books I possess so I can pass them on, swap them etc. to make room for the others and the ever-growing books on the Mount TBR!!

Hi Janet!! I have consulted with Millie and she highly recommends: Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens, Emma, by Jane Austin Atonement by Ian McKewan The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger O'h, and she thoroughly enjoyed 'London' and 'Sarum' by Edward Rutherford. She also liked the Philippa Gregory books about Anne Boleyn and Henry: 'The Other Boleyn Girl' 'The Virgin's Lover' 'The Queen's Fool' 'The Constant Princess' 'The Boleyn Inheritance' and she is waiting for the latest one in the series to come out this September (She has forgotten the title - she is in her dotage at nearly 14 human years, which is 77 in cat years...) Weirdly, I find it difficult to read books about hot countries, summer time etc in the winter and vice versa. Yes, I know, I am weird!!

I like to start at the beginning of a series and I also like to chronologically read through a good author's previous books.

Hi Echo! I think Nicholas Nickleby is a truly gifted and talented, well thought out piece of literature. I really felt every single emotion that was described and really felt as though I WAS there. Kids and Teenagers nowadays who don't read really do not know what they are missing when there are such marvellous authors as Dickens (and modern authors) are out there waiting to be discovered and immensely enjoyed. (Rant over, before I get carried away again....)

Both my husband and I are really into our books, but he is a faster reader than me and he also has an hour or so to travel each way on the tube to work so he gets more time to read. Our cat, Millie, also likes to curl up with me to read a good book. She also likes to lie on my husband when he reads in bed. I would say that Millie is the most prolific reader in the house and has the broadest taste in books!!

You have a good point! However, the other question is whether or not you will ever see your book again -people move, forget etc. and it gets embarassing to keep asking for it back.

I read them if it is an author who I like and have read quite a bit of their work and will more then likely enjoy another book by. You know, the type of author who writes a book and although you want to know what happens, you want the book to never end.... If I have not been that impressed by the book I have just read, then no, I won't bother to read the taster(s).

I am generally careful with my books as I pass most of them on to charity shops,or swap them, so I like to think that they will look enticing. Often, though, the more battered a book is, the better the writer as people can't put it down and pass it on and is generally a well travelled book! I am not too fussy about the condition of books from Charity Shops - as long as I like the synopsis, I am happy to buy the book. However, if it is a fantastic story and a book that I can not see myself parting with, I often buy a New Copy and will not let anyone borrow it! (Probably why we are so short of space on our bookshelves:roll: ) I then return the original to a Charity shop. It is unfortunate, that sometimes my books end up a bit battered, but that is due to me carrying it around all the time. Still, like I said earlier, it shows that it is a good read.

Definately! I am a HUGE fan of Philippa Gregory (author of historical fiction) and have got every one of her books. I have read the complete Anne Boleyn series and am going to start on the books written before (seperate topics). I am also A HUGE Dickens fan ( bit difficult to stalk him, though although I am going on a London Walk the week end after next and we get to see his residence Kirstykat

Hello People, I am sorry if I offended you. Looking back, I agree that I was a bit harsh and stood on my soapbox far too quickly. I think I got too carried away. Well, at least you know the genres and authors that I really don't appreciate.
