    Welcome to the forum!!
  3. I love Border's! They don't charge anything to sit in their cafes, though. There are always a lot of people just sitting there with their laptops or just reading the paper. They also have a great rewards program, and I'm always able to earn free books and stuff. Also, their staff (at least at the ones to which I've been) are super-friendly and helpful, much more so than at Barnes & Noble. They also don't bug you while you're looking, so you're free to browse as long as you want. And their selection is great. Sorry, I felt the need to defend my favorite book store! I still love Half Price Books, though, and I'm known to hit the various library sale, too.
  4. Characters become our friends! My boyfriend has practically given up reading altogether because he can't stand finishing books...it depresses him! He wants to book to go on and on, and he becomes attached to the characters. I'm trying to get him to read again, and to convince him that he can always re-read the book if he misses his friends. Maybe we're all a little mad....
  5. Airframe gets better, believe me, and it has a great ending! Don't give up on it!
  6. There are so many things that have the potential to make a book great, OK, or bad, I can't name them all! I love books with complex heroes and heroines, those that aren't necessarily purely good. I love plots that reveal secrets about the past. I love a book that grabs me and forces me to stay up all night because I can't put it down. I love a book that leaves me breathless and dazed when I've finished it. I love a book that leaves me serene and happy when I've finished it. I love sympathetic villains. Things I don't like: tragedies where everyone dies...what's the point? Post-modern fiction...I HATE it. Most of you know my deep-seeded hatred for Rick Moody, probably the only author I've ever had a negative, physical reaction to. It's just not my thing. I don't like books with no clear narrator, like in The Jane Austen Book Club. That's all I can think of right now!

    hello there

    Welcome to the forum!
  9. Top 5 favorites would probably be: The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Shirley by Charlotte Bronte Bohemian Manifesto by Laren Stover The Relic by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
  10. Icecream - What's a carvery? Tonight I'll most likely have something small and unhealthy, like Spaghetti-O's or something.
  11. If I were ever to write a piece of fiction, I would write a fantasy. Then, who can ever say that there are factual errors!! You're in control of everything. I can't imagine writing a mystery or thriller, and having to research all of those fine points of police procedure and things like that. I have come across some spelling errors in books lately, but believe it or not, they're almost all in my college textbooks! I'm reading a horrible one for my East Asian Culture class, and it drives me crazy! The author also repeats himself over and over and over again.

    Hello!

    Welcome to the forum, Fae!!
  14. Although I like the look of brand new books, I also love my books when they're more obviously well-read, with cracked spines and bent pages. It's evidence that I (or someone else, in the case of a used book) enjoyed the book very much. Most of my books have a slightly distressed look and feel to them, but since they're mine, I don't care!
  15. Welcome to the forum, Natalie!
  16. How sad! I've been wanting to read some of his, as I've always heard about him.
  17. LOL! The best thing to do with LOTR is to have both: the one-volume and the trilogy editions. I like to have the trilogy so I can take it with me, and it's much more comfortable to read. My one-volume edition weighs about 800 pounds.
  18. I count each volume as one complete book. For instance, I am also reading a Poe collection, but when I catalog it in LibraryThing and in my Book Collector software, it will be one book. I can mention all the stories separately when I'm discussing Poe with someone, but I will only list the collection as one book, with one ISBN. I always list The Lord of the Rings as one complete book, which it is. It was never meant to be a trilogy, even though many people own three separate books. I bought a one-volume edition specifically for the fact that it's the way Tolkien wanted it. I'm not as sure about the Narnia series, because it seems more like an intended series, with separate books. If I had them, I would probably list them separately, unless I had bought them in a one-volume edition. In the end, though, you should do what makes you comfortable! These things tend to weigh on my mind somewhat (I'm a compulsive cataloger), so I understand your troubles. I hope I've helped, at least a little bit!
  19. I just recently signed up for Early Reviewers (what took me so long??) and I found out I'm getting a book, and it's only my first time. The book I'm getting is bizarre: Seven Days to Sex Appeal: How to Be Sexier Without Surgery, Weight Loss, or Cleavage by Eva Margolies and Stan Jones. I requested it on a whim...how weird is my library that I actually won that??
  20. Here are mine... Classic/Deceased: Jane Austen Adult Modern: Douglas Preson/Lincoln Child Children's Modern: J.K. Rowling...sorry, she's the only children's author I read, being an adult and all:tong: Author of your favorite book: J.R.R. Tolkien for The Lord of the Rings
  21. I had some iced green tea, garlic naan, and some mild chedder cheese. A light lunch, but oh so yummy!
