Am plodding along with Small Island and am making progress. One of the characters called Hortense is becoming more rounded and real to me now.

You really read a lot!
I've got the Barbara Gowdy book on my 'want to read list'
I am running a bookring on here for "Helpless" by Barbara Goudy. If you wish to join it you can by adding your name to the list in the Bookring section.

Excellent!!! Your avatar is good too

Have put aside The Stand having reached the end of the first section. I now have to get stuck into Small Island by Andrea Levy for the U3A Book Club which I have joined. Have already read the first couple of chapters and am finding it interesting so far. Shouldnt think it will take long to read, 1 week if I am lucky lol

I thought I'd been to Africa.
Small Island by Andrea Levy

I am still plodding away with The Stand and enjoying it. I am nearing the end of the section called Captain Trips. The next section is call On the Border. I am enjoying his style of writing and his amazing imagination. I will have to have a break soon to start on the choice of the book group I have joined - Small Island by Andrea Levy

I like the Citroen car advert, where the car comes apart and dances around like a robot and then drops back down into a car again. I think it is really clever. I actually think all car adverts are good, a lot of imagination seems to go into them.
I also like the latest Post Office ad, very ingenious.

Does anyone know a good book that will teach me to sew? I am not very good. Anyhting I did learn at school (not much) I have forgotten.I just want to do some basic stitching first, as well as learning how to start and finish properly, so that I can sew bits of cloth together to make fun things for the children or repair clothes. I can hand sew for those things, which is what I want to learn. If I progress any further then I might purchase and learn to use a machine, but stitching by hand is good enough for now, and if it teaches me to cut cloth properly (i.e straight and without fraying) that would be great. I was lucky that the cloth I used for Katie's pirate costume was easy to cut.
There are loads of books Emma, but for such a beginner as you, a class to learn to sew would be better, or if you can't stretch to that, I am sure there are some on line tutorials, there are for painting so I am sure there will be some for sewing as well. Good luck.

Nici I just looked at your blog and so agree with this -
The art of happiness is being content with what you have.
If only everyone else followed that philosphy, the world would be a better place I think.

Oooo - thanks for the link, Ann - it looks great.
I've thought about OU but it's so expensive that it's out of the question at the moment. I've had a good look at history on that link and there is some interesting stuff, although there is clearly a Scottish bias so I guess perhaps this started out as a Scottish venture?
Not that it matters - I'm happy to study Scottish poets/history - it's all interesting, after all!
When I did the OU courses in the 80s, I was able to get a bursary from the local council and they paid all my fees. Its worth a try I think. Its interesting what you said about the perceived Scottish bias, I have only browsed through after I registered and didnt notice it. I am more likely to concentrate on the Science and Nature subjects. It may all be above my head now though . The U3A have suggested the Open Learning to members with a view to forming groups of like minded people (in terms of subjects) to discuss and work together on projects. I thought this was a really good idea.

I like a lot of food that other people hate - e.g , sprouts, squid and olives!
Yuk!!!! What is it about sprouts that people love so much. I keep trying them, but to me they are yukky:rant:

You are right Nici, I am enjoying The Stand. One chapter last night had me yawning a bit, but it has picked up again and I am well into it once more. "Rebecca" has been put aside for the moment

I doubt it. I think I'm running out of options! Over the last few years I've done GCSE Maths, GCSE Psychology, AS Level Psychology, GCSE English Language and AS Level English Lit.
It's very hard finding day-time courses and with my husband's hours of work being irregular it's hard to commit to an evening class because of the children.
I agree, the texts listed are great!
It seems to be the OU would be perfect for you Janet. There is an OU Open Learning site you might like to visit.

I read The Thorn Birds before I saw the series (many moons ago). I think the book was better, much better.

That sounds like a really lovely read Michelle.

Been away for aa few days.
Finished Forbidden Places and Sheer Abandon both by Penny Vincenzi and both very easy reads and very enjoyable.
Am now starting to read 2 books -
The Stand by Stephen King and
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Good start on both, think I will enjoy them.
-
Thanks for that review Janet. My OH has always recommended that I read that book. You have tempted me to do just that.

Included in my dinner guest list would be
Barbra Streisand
Sean Connery
Bill Clinton
Stephen Redgrave
Mark Foster
Judy Dench
Sarah Ferguson
Fiona Bruce
Kelly Holmes
That'll do for now:D

Watched it and loved it!!

I think Don Warrington should have gone. He was so wooden in his movements and unsmiling. Out of the two I preferred Phil Daniels, at least he was funny
-
It was a pretty good show for the first one wasn't it? And isn't Mark Foster a hunk!!!! whoooooeeee. I enjoyed all their performances and thought they were all pretty good. I wonder who will get knocked out? My guess either John Sergeant or Gary Rhodes.

I am pretty sure it was "maid", in those days a maid was a virgin, so that is what he was saying - she wasn't a virgin.

Don't think they do it quite as much as the commercial channels do they?
