  1. Good on you for borrowing so many more books than you bought.  :friends3:

Have you seen a new comedy show called The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? I thought of you the other day while watching it because it referenced The Baby-Sitters Club! How cool. :D If you haven't heard of the show, Kimmy Schmidt is a character who was kept in an underground bunker for around 15 years by a guy who told her (and others) that the world had ended. The show is about her being found and then adjusting to life again. I think the only book she had down there to read was BSC Mystery #12: Dawn and the Surfer Ghost, and she uses the plot of the book to work out something about someone. :)

  2. Just learnt that China Mieville has a new book coming out at the end of July. It's a collection of short stories called Three Moments of an Explosion. From the Book Depository:

A highly anticipated collection of short fiction listed in the Guardian's 'Essential Literary Calendar' for 2015 from one of the most exciting and original authors writing today. The multi-award-winning China Mieville has been called 'the equal of David Mitchell or Zadie Smith' (Scotland on Sunday), whose 'inventiveness and precision is awesome' (Independent), and who writes with 'an imagination of immense power' (Guardian). In this extraordinary series of stories, defying definitions and literary stereotyping, he once again proves why he 'is one of the most interesting and promising writers to appear in the last few years in any genre' (Carlos Ruiz Zafon). In these stories, glistening icebergs float above urban horizons; a burning stag runs wild through the city; the ruins of industry emerge unsteadily from the sea; and the abandoned generations in a decayed space-elevator look not up at the stars but down at the Earth. Ranging from portraits of childhood to chilling ghost stories, from dystopian visions to poignant evocations of uncanny love, with beautiful prose and melancholy wit, this breath-taking collection poses searching questions of what it is to be human in an unquiet world. It is a humane and unsentimental investigation of our society, our world, and ourselves.

  3. I agree, Felidae! It also had a Contact vibe for me. Even one of the sound effects (can't remember which one) sounded similar to the noise that was pumping through the speakers when Jodi Foster first heard the signal. Speaking of 2001, did you know that the robots in Interstellar were inspired by the monolith in 2001?

  4. I tend to close my eyes because of all the spray, even though they put glasses on me. I just try to focus on keeping my mouth open wide enough and not giving in to my desire to swallow, which tends to cause more spray.  :blush2: I think I only open my eyes to see what's coming next when they've stopped for a bit.

This thread is depressing. I'm overdue for a dentist visit and I'm going to get into trouble because I was referred to some specialist the last time I went, but I never followed it through.

  5. I'm sorry to hear that :friends0: Hehehe 'taken steps'. Does sound rather ominous :P You seem disappointed you didn't get to whack anyone with a book. You can whack me if it helps, just maybe not too hard  Well if you ever want to chat/rant etc I am always happy to listen, be it here, facebook, pm whatevs. I don't doubt you've got plenty of people you can already talk to but the offer is there :)

:D I said 'taken steps' because I didn't want to bore you with the details. Thanks for the offer to whack you, but that wouldn't be kind, as you haven't done anything to wrong me! (That I know of...  :ontome: ). :D

  6. That's good, after that Jeff Bridges article I read.  Should I read the book first or see the movie first?

Definitely read the book first. I think it's always better to have your own picture of the story than to read it while imagining everything from the movie. :)

  7. Is it based on the book The Giver?

Yesterday we rewatched Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, it was fun to see it again.

Yes, it's based on the book. :) It has been so long since I read the book that I couldn't remember much of it at all, so it was good to be reminded. It helped tie it together with the other three books I read recently.

Midnight in Paris again, brilliant charming film that really brings to life the 1920s, especially the art and literature. Love it!

I bought this ages ago but still haven't watched it yet!

  8. I don't known what I was thinking the other day when I said I bought The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches, because even though that's the book I meant to buy (book 6) I instead purchased The Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust (book 7). Ugh!

Hmm, sounds like a perfect excuse to buy another book! ;)

  9. Yay for East of Eden! I have that in my jar of priority reads for the year. Even though I'm a bit daunted by it, I really hope I choose it at some stage!

And you are correct, I would never be ashamed of Frankie.  :friends3: There are so many wonderful authors around that it can be hard to remember all of our favourites when put on the spot and asked to list them. I know I always forget a few!
