Yes! That sounds perfect
It would give that extra little boost of time to relax and actually do some things for pleasure rather than for school or other things I have to do.
That's right! Except our governments would probably just make us work more hours per day.
I haven't done much reading lately. I'm plodding through the last part of Underground but having a bit of trouble with it. And I may have ordered a few books online last night.

I just watched Hair, one of my favourite musicals. I have it on DVD, but it was showing on TV, and I haven't seen it on TV for decades, so I was pretty excited.
-
I was going to write something along those lines, but thought better of it.
-
Very interesting article. Thanks for sharing. It's all a bit confusing to me, but frankly I'm in favour of anything that might help to reduce the price of books in Australia.
-
I haven't heard of most of the books being mentioned here.
I'd like to see a British TV (BBC) adaptation of The War of the Worlds; I'm pretty sure that CGI has come far enough now to make this possible.
Would you like to see an exact adaptation or a series that takes a few liberties to expand it into a longer series? (I suspect the latter—you're more of a purist, aren't you?)
-
I must say .. I think it will look very well on your shelves
You mean next to all of the other books I've bought based on your recommendations?
I should add them all up one day and work out actually how
badgood an influence you've been on me.Sounds extreme but necessary. We are sometimes in need of paper for the wood burner .. I will bear Miss Smilla in mind
Yes, please do. I hated Miss Smilla.

I'm reading The Spire by William Golding at the moment. It's fiction, but is based on Salisbury Cathedral, which is somewhere I love to visit (it's a beautiful building and they have a wonderful café!). I'm about a fifth of the way in. I've not read anything by him before (I have Lord of the Flies on my 'to read' pile) but so far so good.
I wasn't a fan of Lord of the Flies, but I'm glad to hear that The Spire is good. I visited many cathedrals on my short trip to the UK. I probably visited too many actually, because they started to blur together after a while.
York Minister will probably always be my favourite because I visited it first, so it had the biggest effect on me. The main thing I remember about Salisbury Cathedral is how much trouble I had trying to fit the whole darn thing in my photo, including the spire. Practically had to walk halfway across town to do it.
I'm loving The Rosie Project. So far behind most on this forum
At least you have the book and you're reading it. I probably won't get around to it until after it's released in the smaller paperback format!
I have that same problem too. I'm reading a great book, but I have so much stuff going on that I have to either neglect the book or neglect my schoolwork and friendships. Why is there not more time in the day?
I've spent to much time thinking about this.
I've decided that a 30-hour day would work better for me. Two for sleeping and four for playing.

Am I the only one who sticks with a TV show no matter what?
Even if I don't necessarily like the direction a show is going in, I always have to keep watching to see what happens! Otherwise I'd always be curious. I guess it's the same reason why I always have to finish books.
Peacefield, I had to look up Kevin Williamson to see who he was.
I can't believe he's the creator of both Dawson's Creek and The Following as well. They are such very different shows!

Anna's post about The Odyssey being made into a movie (or movies) got me thinking...what books would you like to see made into a movie, movie franchise or TV series? Or what books would you like to see adapted again (either because the original was bad, or because you'd like to see a more recent adaptation)?
The first one that comes to mind for me is The Count of Monte Cristo. I saw the movie starring Guy Pearce and really disliked it (although I can't quite remember why now—I think I thought it was too rushed or something). I'd love to see TCoMC given the Game of Thrones treatment: a big-budget TV series that allows viewers to really get to know the characters and their motivations. The book is so chock-full of, well, everything that you could want—prison escape, hidden treasure, love, revenge, betrayal, murder, etc.—that I've always felt that only a TV series could do it justice.

Thanks Janet.

Wow! It's just like the lovely big houses I've come to associate with America through movies and TV shows.
Is that an alien in the berry patch (the round thing with big eyes)?
Or perhaps a scarecrow-type thing?
-
Aw, such a shame that you didn't enjoy The War of the Worlds! I remember it being quite atmospheric, and I enjoyed the prose, but to each their own.
My grandfather (since passed) remembered hearing the radio broadcast!
Are you talking about the Orson Welles broadcast?
-
Thanks for the info, Raven. I've always felt like I would never be able to catch up with all the Discworld books (up to #6), but now that I finally can, I don't really want to.

Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman. I'm working my way through from the beginning and am up to the beginning of season 2. I never get sick of this show. Dr Mike is surely one of the greatest female characters to ever grace our screens. I love her fiery spirit and the way she constantly stands up to the racist and sexist townsfolk.

Emoticons culled.
Wow, you got it exactly right
(Never mind that you were talking about a whole decade...
)
I was oh so close to being wrong, wasn't I?
Someone should write someone and suggest someone do something like that!
Hop to it, then.
I can't believe I already forgot about the 30 books list
I honestly forgot I'd posted it and was meant to do the whole thing again
Have I ever really thrown a book. Have you? I've done it in my head a number of times but to actually throw a book. I may have slammed one next to me on the couch but across a room...
Colin Firth? Well, maybe all the books that had nudity in them
You usually have a much better memory! Fancy forgetting already.
I've heard of people throwing books across the room before, but I can't imagine doing it. It seems a rather extreme/excessive reaction to have to a book. I mean, I've really, really disliked certain books, but it's never caused a physical reaction. Even if I hate a book, I wouldn't like to risk physically damaging it. I'd rather pass it on intact to someone else.A book group I follow on FB posted a link to an article today about the best actors who have placed Mr Darcy and asked who was people's favourite. I immediately thought 'There's only one Mr Darcy!' but lots of people had beaten me to it and posted the same thing.
The Railway Children is one of my favourite children's books ever!
^ I was going to jump in and say I thought perhaps Janet had spoken about it before...but she beat me to it! Was it one of the books chosen for the English Counties Challenge? I can't remember where it's set, but it certainly seems like it would be an appropriate candidate. -
Yes .. I love all three. I particularly love The Grand Budapest Hotel and bought it for them .. forgetting that a lot of its charm is in the visuals. It's so madcap etc too .. and not being able to properly see it Dad couldn't follow it and Mum just about clung on.
I felt bad then .. for not thinking it through properly
Aw. We have to choose movies for our parents very carefully, don't we? My Dad would watch pretty much anything with me, but Mum is more picky. She doesn't like anything that jumps all over the place or is too weird, so I wouldn't recommend The Grand Budapest Hotel to her. Then again, I thought she wouldn't like Across the Universe (the Beatles musical) because it was a bit strange, but she really liked it and has seen it several times.

I tried not to imagine Poppyshake actually walking the book, because I knew it wouldn't end well. I only let my imagination go as far as the book resting quietly on the ground.

I wonder how old the movie is. I wonder if it's been on TV over here.
I think it dates back to the 70s. I'll have to check now...yep, 1970.
I do borrow books when I go and visit Nurmes
Especially if I'm staying for some particular holiday and will therefore be staying for longer.
You make an interesting point: whether we buy fewer books because we borrow so many. I really don't know how those two things correlate. But as the prices of books are on the same level over here as they are over there, I'm betting we aren't the nation that buys the most books per inhabitant, percentage-wise. Books are hella expensive
Hopefully someone will do a study of the ratio of book purchases to library loans one day. But like you said, books are expensive to buy
, so I'd bet that people borrow more than they buy.
-
I haven't read The Railway Children (it's on my TBR pile) but I've seen the movie a couple of times and it was quite enjoyable.
Yay Nurmes! I wonder how much one particular person bumped up the statistics.
(You borrow books when you go back for a visit, don't you?) It would be interesting to know how book sales compare to library loans, and whether there are fewer book shops/book purchases in Finland because people borrow more often.

Ooh, great review! Another one for the wishlist!

Intend to take my book out for a walk this morning ..
I can't help but picture your book with a leash wrapped around its middle, and you holding the other end of the leash.
I'm about two-thirds of the way through Underground. I've read the accounts of the everyday users of the subway, and now I'm reading Murakami's short analysis of the whole situation. The last part of the book is about Aum, the religious group that was responsible for the attack.

Watched The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Book Thief and Paddington with my mum and dad. Bit disastrous really and a warning to me not to attempt to watch films with them again
Unless it's The Sound of Music or something on the TV.
Wish I had seen Easter Parade .. I expect they do too
Aw, didn't any of you enjoy the movies? I loved The Grand Budapest Hotel, but I can see why others wouldn't.
I watched parts of Easter Parade on the weekend.
I love Judy Garland!

Nina (Elena) will be leaving The Vampire Diaries at the end of the sixth season, and it looks like Michael (Tyler) is leaving as well. That should really be the end of the show, I think. What's TVD without the main character?!

I thought I'd do a quick summary of my reading/buying for the first quarter: January to March.
I read 12 books in total. This included two ebooks, so only 10 were from my TBR pile. According to Goodreads, I'm on track to meet my goal of 50 books.
I bought 11 books during the same period (none during January and March—all were bought in February). This means that my TBR pile effectively increased by one, which I guess isn't too bad (and I've since finished another book, so I'm now back where I started at the beginning of the year!)
I finished two series that I started at least a couple of years ago: The Giver quartet by Lois Lowry (I read books 2–4) and the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth (I read books 2–3).
I read four books from my book jar, and I'm currently reading two more. Speaking of the book jar, I don't think I ever posted a pic of the new, decorated jar. Here it is.
So...not as much reading as many of you, but I'm pretty happy with my progress.
Rest in Peace

Yes, RIP Richie Benaud.
I read an article on news.com.au about 10 of Richie's funniest commentating moments:
1. 'He’s usually a good puller but he couldn’t get it up that time'.
2. 'Well, Bruce Reid is not the worst batsman there is at international level. But those who are worse would not need to hire the Myer Music Bowl to hold a convention'.
3. 'And Glenn McGrath dismissed for two, just ninety-eight runs short of his century'.
4. [On a Justin Langer six]: 'He’s not quite got hold of that one. If he had, it would have gone for nine'.
5. 'The slow-motion replay doesn’t show how fast the ball was really travelling'.
6. 'His throw went absolutely nowhere near where it was going'.
7. 'Laird has been brought in to stand in the corner of the circle'.
8. 'There were no scores below single figures'.
9. [After a streaker ran on the field]: 'There was a slight interruption there for athletics'.
10. [On Shane Warne's 'Gatting ball']: 'Gatting has absolutely no idea what happened to it. (He) still doesn’t know'.
