Noooo!
-
I'm so glad I started following the FB page because they've posted a three-minute clip from the first episode. They must have chosen it with BCF in mind, because it takes place in a library! 'Forgive me sir...but what a library!'
-
Haven't had too much time for reading lately, but I'm 130 pages into The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.
-
Yes, you're right! I just Googled it and it turns out there is an official Facebook page for the show, where I found this. It starts at 9 pm on BBC1, Sunday 17 May.

Ah, OK. Thanks! Great review of East of Eden. I never knew it was an allegory, so I'll keep that in mind when I read it. And I absolutely love reading sweeping epics, so now I'm even more excited to read it.
-
That's so cute. I'll keep a close eye on this thread then, because I'm sure you'll let us know when you find out the date.

I'm so glad it wasn't made into a movie. There was no way a movie could do the book justice! I bought and read the hefty tome when it was first published, and a few years ago I bought the three-volume set at a great price. When I get around to re-reading it, I'll definitely go for the slimmer volumes!

Two weeks...yay!! Thanks for the info.
-
I finished The Girl Who Played with Fire and started The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.
-
Aw, what a darling! Lucky you. This is probably my favourite of the series. The fifth book would probably overtake it if it wasn't for Harry being too much of a 'teenager' (whining and shouting all the time).
-
I'm three-quarters of the way through The Girl Who Played with Fire.

Considering I don't go out much, it's surprising how often I'm unable to take part in these read-a-thons. I'm going away for four days this weekend, so I'll be missing the entire thing! But maybe I'll get some reading done while I'm away. Have fun everyone!

Did you have a pop-up appear when you clicked on the link to the review? I can't remember what it said now, but I was able to close the message without subscribing (or doing whatever it wanted me to do). The review was posted on 13 April and it's mentioned in the comments that there was no release date at that time, but the author was thinking around mid May or so. I'd say your guess of end May would be closer (I guess I just don't want to get my hopes up too much!)

Campaign to find the world’s favourite Agatha Christie book
Kylie replied to chesilbeach's topic in Book News
From the article and comments, it's good to see a wide variety of titles being chosen...that means I have a lot to look forward to! Just based on how well known her titles are, I'd have to guess that Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile or The Murder of Roger Ackroyd will win. Or And Then There Were None. I'm not sure which one I'd choose. It's difficult because her writing and plots are so consistently wonderful! Inver, I highly recommend giving her a go. I think you'd like her books! -
Wow, lots of great and varied lists here! Here's mine, in no particular order: Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee The Count of Monte Cristo Alexandre Dumas Catch-22 Joseph Heller The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Gone with the Wind Margaret Mitchell Dracula by Bram Stoker Harry Potter JK Rowling (entire series) The Devil in the White City Erik Larson Ack, that was so difficult! The first eight spots were filled very quickly, but narrowing the rest down for the last two spots was difficult. I can't wait until BCF turns 20...then I won't be so restricted!

And here's a review by a lucky journalist who got to view the first two episodes.

Here's a one-minute-long trailer. Looks great!

Interesting idea!

Thanks for your lovely comments, Kay and Muggles. I haven't yet read anything by Spike, but I do have this book on my TBR pile. I hope you enjoy it! Is his humour anything like Groucho Marx? I do hope so.

Ooh, look at these lovely Alice in Wonderland special editions by Moleskine!
-
Bah, they should give the books different names so it's not so confusing! There are plenty of Austen spin-offs that have different names but where you can still tell that it's related to the original. I've only read Austen's version, so I withdraw my comment about Val's NA being a great read. Best not to force Wuthering Heights. I read a few dozen more pages of The Girl Who Played with Fire today.

I watched Hitchcock's Rebecca. I've been wanting to see it for years but wouldn't let myself watch it until I read the book. I'm really glad I waited. Great movie!
-
Hehe. I know what you mean! I put off reading Terry Pratchett for years because I was afraid I'd like the Discworld series and want to buy them all. Eventually I gave in... and now I've bought them all! Yes, the same Abby. I don't think she'd mind, otherwise I guess she wouldn't have suggested that I could use it, but I still feel a bit bad. I'm sure there are many cats named Jasper around the place though. Which reminds me...there was a dog named Jasper in Rebecca!
-
Thanks. It was actually Abby's idea. I put out a request on Facebook at the time to ask for suggestions for literary-type names. One friend suggested Mr Darcy and Abby suggested Jasper. I really liked both, but I tried 'Jasper' out first, and it seemed to suit him. I might reserve Mr Darcy (or just Darcy) for another cat in the future. The other friend (a girl I used to work with) has a cat named Boo (after Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird). Now Abby has a beautiful cat named Winny, and I'm wondering whether I 'stole' the name Jasper from her, because I knew she had always liked the name for a cat. Yep. I'd forgotten how good it is! And ooh, yes, she does remind me a bit of Chloe (but a bit darker and maybe even more sullen!) Thanks Alexi. I'm trying to savour them, but it'll be a bit sad when I get to the end and know there are no more to read (well, not by Stieg, anyway). So much for me trying to read the second Millennium book along with my Mum. She finished it today and I'm only about 12 per cent through, according to my Kindle app. Mum has now started the third book!

Thanks Athena. I think you'll enjoy both the Stieg Larsson and Jasper Fforde books. Have you read much in the crime genre before? I don't remember seeing it pop up too much on your reading lists. Jasper Fforde is a clever writer with an awesome imagination. Thanks Ian! I think I'd like to read Jamaica Inn next, and I also have a collection of her short stories (The Birds). I thought I'd given Mum an old copy of Rebecca that I had as a spare, but I checked her bookcases the other day and apparently I gave her Julius and another one (I think it was My Cousin Rachel). I don't know why I gave them to her! It must have been a moment of weakness when I was feeling guilty about the size of my TBR pile. I guess I'll have to borrow them back from her now! Thanks Muggles. I ended up looking up Nightingale and it's certainly getting good reviews! Did you know that a fourth Millennium book is going to be published this year? I can't remember at the moment who will be writing it. I suppose time will tell whether it will be as good as the original three books that Larsson wrote. I was looking up when I last read something by Fforde, and it has been years! I'm well overdue for a read. Clever Mum!
