  1. I started listening to Room by Emma Donaghue today.
  2. Thanks Devi and the same to you
  3. Thanks Poppyshake. Happy new year to you too. I have to keep my TBR under control because I am a slow reader. I'm quite impulsive and used to just buy books when I wanted them and then they would languish on my shelves, never again tempting me bringing me nothing but guilt. Now I've replaced my impulse buys with additions to the wish list. It's a lot cheaper
  4. Thanks everyone!
  5. Thanks Julie. Whoops - those wish lists are infectious aren't they?
  6. Right new year new start! I hope this year I'll be able to finish more books than last year since I only managed 21! I declare this thread open
  7. Thanks Julie
  8. Thanks Devi My total for 2013 is 21 books - a little pitiful when you consider some of them were audio books that I listened to concurrently with my reading ones. In fairness The Making of Modern Britain was a bit of a marathon and I was slowed down by some other fairly heavy non-fiction. Still, must try harder in 2014
  9. Thanks Athena
  10. My poor neglected thread! I'm still reading Ship of Magic and Six Easy Pieces. I'm over half way through the first and about half way through the second. Tut tut, I need to get reading. However in my defence December has been incredibly busy - not only with Christmas, but there are also 5 birthdays in my family, including my own 40th which was a major planning feat! My reading year has been enjoyable but not as prolific as I'd hoped. My TBR has gone down - but only by 3 books!! Still it's the right direction

  15. Hope you enjoy it Marie!
  16. I finished Seeking Spirituality which I enjoyed. I'm in a bit of a lull with Ship of Magic so I've started Six Easy Pieces by Richard Feynman.
  17. Yea me too Kat. It's so compulsive. I think they've done a great job updating it. I'd love to watch the original again - I'm tempted to get it on DVD But as for the new one, I can't wait for the next series.
  18. I can understand that as they have changed things quite considerably and updated it for a modern audience. The old characters are all there, but much younger versions of them and they are similar but different in some ways to the originals. I think it's awesome though, it's a shame your wife doesn't like it. That's so cool though, that she met the cast! I haven't caught the last episode of series 1 yet. Hoping to watch it tonight!
  19. I finished Philosophy of mind. It was really interesting and enjoyable but got quite technical on the philosophy and metaphysics so I found it a little heavy at times. It's a fascinating subject though.
  20. Has anyone been watching this? I think it's brilliant, but I was a huge fan of Prisoner Cell Block H which it's a remake/re-imagining of.
  21. Congratulations Kell! He's gorgeous
  22. I'm an auntie!!!! :-)

      Thanks Popppy :)

  23. We already have a religion thread in the debating/mature discussion section. These topics sound like they should be there (separately?) rather than general book discussions (since this appears to be a topic about the topic of the book rather than the book itself)
  24. Well I've started the next live ship book, The Mad Ship to help me get through all the non-fiction. Looking forward to getting stuck in. Philosophy of Mind is going really well but it's quite long and not exactly light reading so I'm only about a third way in.
  25. Well Ship of Magic is the first of the live ship trilogy so it's not really a one-off. As far as the other trilogy: It doesn't give away anything in the farseer trilogy other than referring vaguely to some events. However some of the later live ship books, might go a bit further than that. No characters from the farseer trilogy appear in the live ship books but some events may get mentioned, without being greatly spoilerish. So I think you could read the liveship books first but some of the ideas in the farseer books wouldn't be a complete surprise. If you have no intention of reading farseer then yes, go ahead and read the liveship books. You don't need farseer as a backstory. However, farseer is an excellent trilogy. I would recommend reading it as well and preferably first. Sorry, a rather longwinded answer!
