  1. and questionable school lunches. Markus felt that the absence of fibre in the children's diets was the root of all childhood maladies, so he'd made it his life's work to rectify the situation. Understandably this had not been an unqualified success and a few of the more delinquent pupils had covertly circulated a petition demanding immediate ................

  2. He decided to go by train. This was a rather unfortunate choice, as it took even longer. After being shunted unceremoniously into a siding at Higgley Bottom and forgotten, then derailed at Badger's Mount, just out of Bumble's Green, by a wandering flock of excited, and vociferous turkeys, trudging 20 kms in the pouring rain (at which point he was very thankful he'd packed those wellingtons Dex recommended) he finally reached deepest Cheam, after a journey lasting a mere two days and three nights. The smell of kale assailed his nostrils a good kilometre before he reached the farm and he now wished he'd packed some ...............

  3. I'm currently reading this book too. Only 50 or so pages in, and I have noticed a few differences between the book and first season.

I definitely recommend reading before watching.

I made myself finish the book before I'm allowed to watch the first series, so will be interesting to see what changes they've made.

  4. Glad to hear you enjoyed the book! I plan to read it soon. I hope the violence won't be too bad, I cringe during some scenes of the TV series (generally it's easier for me though to read the book, I can handle it better).

I'm the same Athena, I shut my eyes when things get too gruesome. But I handled the books OK, so you should be alright too. You could always skip the more brutal passages. If you do read it, let me know what you think. He really is a very good writer.

  5. Attached photos are of a few flowers and shrubs that I planted at my house.

First photo is of bleeding heart flower. Immediately to the right are some wild (kinda rare) trillium that I found in the woods in Pennsylvania and transplanted to my house ;). To the left of the bleeding heart are coral bells - 3 or 4 differnent types.

Second photo is of a coral bell plant that is flowering.

So pretty Muggle. And what a beautiful Japanese Maple (if I've got that right)at the back of your second photo. Do you like hellebores and hostas? They would go well with your other plants if they are in the shade.
  6. I've FINALLY finished George RR Martin's Game of Thrones, the first book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. The length of time it took me to read this in no way reflects on the book's merit. It was absolutely excellent, I highly recommend it. He writes the most wonderful characters, each chapter deals with one of them, and slowly they are all drawn together into one interwoven story. He is a master at unexpected twists and turns in the plot, you're left stunned at some of the events and revelations.

At times I found the cruelty and violence very real and graphic, so this may be a bit much for the more tender-hearted.

These are long books and I'm going to have a break before the next one, but I will definitely be reading more. I want to watch the first TV series now, I've been waiting to finish the book, it will be interesting to see if the characters are how I've imagined them.

  7. (nice twist Dex! :D)

..... eliminated and he was the one to do it. As he walked along he hummed happily to himself and stopped now and then to sniff the flowers (it was springtime in Greenland and this year the gardens were putting on a particularly fine show). Nothing raised his spirits more than the promise of a nice little bit of unbridled killing and as long as ..............
