OH read In the Garden of Beasts, and enjoyed it. However I don't know if I'll read it now as he has told me the whole thing! I think you've made up my mind regarding Miss Peregrine, I've been on the fence. Will pick it up. Just finished Jack Higgins latest, A Devil is Waiting. meh Started the last in the 50 Shades trilogy, Fifty Shades Freed. Redemption is at hand!

Boy, you are not kidding! I told my OH that I couldn't believe how well Brolin absolutely channeled Tommy Lee. Agreed, it was more for fans of the original. Honestly the opening of the film really put me off, but we waited to see and it improved considerably.

Exactly. I wonder what it is that propels books like that? As you mention DVC, and now 50 Shades. As my mind has gone completely blank, what other books do you remember that have been both reviled and flown off the shelves like hot cakes?

At the times in my life I've been overwhelmed by events, I have usually turned to "comfort" reads. Books I've loved and admired the characters. Malevil by Robert Merle was my go-to book for that for a long time, and also Mary Stewart's Merlin series. These are all books where relationships were loving and intense. I guess I needed to know that was still possible. Also when I was upset, I'd go back and reread Shirley Rousseau Murphy's Joe Grey series. Talking, crime solving "tough guy" cat. This woman knows cats! lol Now that my life is more settled, I tend to be a bit more exploratory in my reading, perhaps delving into unknown waters. It's fun.

Or even judge by the first book, the second one was really better IMO. LOL regarding the eye rolling etc., yes, exactly. LOL No pun was intended, but still.........yup! Oh, I'm glad you posted. NO! Nothing wrong with anyone's opinion of the book(s). To each their own kettle of fish. I'd be interested in why you hated it though. It would be interesting to see some sort of stats on the ones that really loved it as opposed to those who hated it with regard to their other reading habits, or lack thereof. Rumors fly.

I thought I'd share this link of Dr. Ruth, haven't seen her in ages. There is a video with the article, the vid is far more informative than the article which only touches on what she says. Interesting. Dr. Ruth Endorses Fifty Shades of Grey And, you'll notice a link at the end of the article that references the books being brought back into the Florida Library System.

Good, I look forward to reading your review. Last I looked, there were none in our local second hand book store yet. LOL HIgh literature is fine, but variety is the spice of life.

DITTO!! Cicero is a special favorite of mine, and the first two were pretty good. Is that the Harlan Coben?

Oh, yes. In fact I just got off the treadmill 5 minutes ago. Only for 22 minutes, but I'll go back on for another 22 after I have some tea and peanutbutter. I put a DVD of Seinfeld on, and each episode is 22 minutes. Boy, does that make it go by quickly!! I used to read my kindle on the treadmill, but the distance is odd for my glasses, and it wasn't restful, so switched to the tv. I laugh my way through it now.

We went to see Men in Black III, or maybe it's only called MIB III...not sure. Anyhow, a guilty pleasure for me. Tommy Lee Jones is so fantastic, and Will Smith was very good. As always. Hard to say I'd recommend it. Lots of silliness, but I did like the back story it gave the guys.

We saw that very preview last night at the movies. Looks like DiCaprio strikes again. I simply have to read the book now! Before we see the film.

I've collected the series, second hand, but haven't started it yet. When I recently re-read The Stand, well, I thought it was a re-read. Now I'm not so sure. I'm thinking I possibly read the first part of the DT series. /sigh/ It's been so long, I'm just not sure anymore, at least till I start the series.

I'm about half way through A Devil is Waiting by Jack Higgins (Sean Dillon series)

Yes, I've read the others in the Milliennium series, hoping for a 4th of course. Alas. I loved them. Some of it was a little hard to take, but so integral to her personality I don't see how the story could have done without them. Besides her retribution was every victim's dream come true. I'm not sure if I've read that particular Sheldon, but I did read a number of his years ago and enjoyed them as well. Haven't dipped into them in ages though. Haven't read Carrie, but have recently (re)read The Stand and have read his novella, The Fog (think that's the name) along with that book of short stories, and Thinner. Oh, and one written under Richard Bachman....The Running Man. Enjoyed them, but couldn't get into It. /shiver/ What other sorts of books/genres do you enjoy?

I read and enjoyed both of your reviews Hannah. Agree that Dragon Tattoo was a slow starter, but more than made up for it. Welcome to the site.

H. Just read your review, well done. Funny though, a couple of items you mention as irritating you, the Inner Goddess/Subconscious bits, I found to be effective, and enjoyed. I appreciated the personalization of her inner conflict in this manner.

Hanananah, I'd say continue, as I found the second book to be better. My OH has just finished the third one, and says it is even better with an unexpected ending. I'll be reading it as soon as I finish my present read.

Book Depository has free shipping, anywhere in the world!
pontalba replied to Maggie Dana's topic in Book Buying
I have bought off of Book Depository, and was satisfied. However on occasion I've seen books advertised by them on Amazon Marketplace, so I'd go to BD directly and the book was always "unavailable". Kind of put me off them. Of course I have Amazon Prime, so that makes a difference for me. Getting new books in two days is great to say the least. -
Started A Devil is Waiting by Jack Higgins It's the latest in the Sean Dillon series.

MysteryRose, It does feel wonderful, and the accomplishment is verra satisfying. I haven't lost any more, but we'd gone off the reservation, and we'd both gained about 4 pounds, which are now, again, Gone. So, back on the diet seriously. With my back gone out, I haven't been on the treadmill, but am starting again today. That always pushes me over the hump so to speak with weight loss. CB, eggs and mushrooms sound perfectly lovely! Frankie, I was thinking that perhaps a knee brace would help support the knee for you. That way running would not be as much of a strain on it. Have you tried a brace? I've had to wear one on occasion, and, in fact have the sort of brace that can contain one of those soft ice packs. Boy, that helped a lot! Good luck.

We watched Our Man Flint from 1966 with James Coburn. Camp. Funny. A great escape. The Flint films were a take off on the James Bond franchise.

Finished Admission by Jean Hanff Korelitz tonight. Excellent story of an Admissions person for Princeton University. Great back story for her.

Glad you enjoyed it Alexlove. OH is reading #3 at present, I've read the first 2, will read it when he finishes. I'd started something else and he finished his other read first. I believe there is so much more below the surface in these books that perhaps some don't take the time, or have the inclination to analyze. Some of James's devices are quite clever actually.

I've looked around and can't find it either on the shelf or in Library Thing. Re Marigold Hotel, I've bought the book it's based on...it's in the stack.....

Ooshie, Well, in a way, I felt that was part of the point. A backlash yes as mentioned but also perhaps the Great Equalizer? Now that I've read the first two books I have to agree though it is more about equality and a bit about female dominance.
