  1. Feelings on the subject sometimes change as a person gets older. I also felt like many of you when lending a book. I expected it back within a reasonable time and in good condition. I remember lending a book to my wife's brother-in-law and him not returning it for a good number of years and how it bothered me. And now, at my age, I am giving my books away (to the library).
  2. Grisham says that "The Innocent Man" was difficult to write. When he is writing a novel and going well he normally can write 7 or 8 pages a day. However, when writing The innocent Man he was doing about 2 or 3 pages a day. The amount of research he did was significant and he even hired a 3rd year law student from the University of Virginia to help going through all the material. When I get time I will post a few photos of Grisham in his office with the piles of research material. The subject in the book lived in a town near where Grisham was raised in Mississippi, they were both approx. the same age, and they both had dreams that were similar in making their mark in the world. Grisham said that he probably would not write anymore books of this type because they are too much hard work.
  3. Did you finish White Doves at Morning. I couldn't remember the book as I have read so many of JLB's books that I had to go to Amazon to get a description. Then I remembered. It was a very good read. gosh, I wish there were more authors like James Lee Burke. I really recommend that some of the members here check him out for some great reading. He is one of my favorite authors.
  4. Kell, perhaps the comment wasn't as serious as you thought. It may have been an off-hand complement as to how nice you keep things.
  5. Thanks dogmatix. I will have to check out the restaurant. and thanks sofia, I will have to hunt down the Vinha Du Monte. I will have to think some on the red wines as to my favorites.
  6. It depends somewhat on the size baking dish used. A small deep dish and it will be more malleable than if you use a larger flatter dish. again, different brands of cornmeal will result in softer or harder polenta. It takes a little experimenting with the oven time. Oh yeah, when eating it for breakfast I like to pour a wee bit of maple syrup on it and mix it in....soooo good.
  7. I told a friend that I would post my recipe for polenta and now see that I had posted it months ago so I am bumping it up in this thread. The amount of time in the oven will depend somewhat on the type of polenta you use, so use my recommendation and then adjust for future when baking.
  8. You may want to try one book and then if you like it go for the other 3 in the Thursday Next series. If you decide to try them read The Eyre Affair first.
  9. Choose your order of preference.
  10. Thought I would bump this up to get some more comments.
  11. Your turn to choose: 1. Ercavio 2. Nora 3. Vinho Verde 4. Las Brisas
  12. Now how did I forget already about nabokov and the butterflies. BTW dogmatix, great photo of the butterfly. All Butterflies are beautiful things. I am about 2/3 through chapter 3. I am amazed at his recollection of all the relatives, the dates, their line of work, etc. Wow, what a family.
  13. Ok, guess I will have to buy some of each. I agree your behavior is exemplary. btw, did you notice that dogmatix had kept secret her favorite wine, Eracvio Blanco, from us. I wonder why. I will definitely have to try some. Between you two I have discovered some great and enjoyable white wines. I found this description of "dogmatix's" favorite: Ercavio Blanco "The perfect summer sipper? Light, subtle, and clean, with notes of banana, mango, and papaya, this will blow away any Pinot Grigio at this price." Time for my treadmill exercise.
  14. Are you going to keep the location of this wine a secret. Guess you didn't get over to Calvert-Woodley and fill up your trunk with their wine specials.
  15. If you were going to buy a case, which of the 2 would you buy. Gotta stay on your best behaviour.
  16. Molk - reminds me of my childhood when we would milk the cow. The first time I pulled and pulled and nothing happened. did you ever drink milk squirted into your mouth.
  17. No, no. Open the wine. I am anxious to get your opinion on the two.
  18. Please let me know which of these two you like the best: Quinta da Aveleda Avelada Vinho Verde.........or..... Casal Garcia Vinho Verde
  19. I bumped up the post by Kell that gives a good description of the different reading orders for pratchett in the author thread. Click on the chart provided by Kell. http://www.bookclubforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=40977#post40977 After you review the chart then we can discuss the different books to start with.
  20. Bumping this up so some of the readers just starting Terry Pratchett books can get an idea where to start.
  21. Enough of that. Go to your room. Yuck!!!
  22. Check out the Terry Pratchett thread under Authors. You will get a good idea of the sequences for reading the books and books that everyone likes....heck, we like all of his books.
  23. I am curious. Have you read The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde yet. If so, what did you think of the book.
  24. How do you eat sea urchins while you are snorkeling. actually maureen, I remember you telling about making the spaghetti with sea urchin sauce. I was too embarrassed to ask about it as I had never had that before.
  25. he and his brother remind me a little of my brother and myself when we were kids. Unwrapping the Christmas presents and looking and then re-wrapping them.......unsuccessfully. My brother and I found where our Christmas toys were hid and had the toys worn out before Christmas and then re-wrapped them....unsuccessfully.
