Vladimir Nabokov - Speak, Memory (Discussion)
muggle not replied to muggle not's topic in General Fiction
Keep posting y'all. I am through the intro and about a dozen pages into the book. I do enjoy reading the posts even though I am not up to speed. -
I really enjoy the wines from Spain. Both the reds and whites. Oh heck, I enjoy wines from all over the world. Try some of the Spanish wines from the Tempranillo grape.

If you could only read one Stephen King...

Yes, I did mean that I probably will be out of comission for a while during and after the move in November. And for the nomination of books that are newly released, I will bow to Michelle's recommendation. -

Lisey's Story by Stephen King will be released late October. If I am still around I would like to nominate it as a book for the Reading Circle in November. -

I have the Vintage International Edition dated 1989. It is from the library which brings up a problem. I will have to return the book probably while the discussion is going on and will not be able to refer to the book. Oh yeah, another potential problem. What if I don't like the book. -
The great yearly wine sale at my favorite store for buying wines does not start until, I think, October 16th. The store itself is little more than a hole-in-the-wall. However, it is one of the greatest sellers of wine in Washington, DC and has good wine experts. The prices are usually very good, especially when buying wines on sale that week. The exception, for some reason, is the Nora wine which has the highest price of any store that I buy from. I always do my shopping on their website and then stop in at the store and the wine is ready for pick-up. I usually only buy what is on sale, with exceptions of course. http://www.wineaccess.com/store/calvertwoodley/shop.html

John Grisham and Stephen King are going to appear together at a fund raising event for one of our politicians in our small town. They are both going to talk and take questions from the audience. I will pass on the event as the least expensive tickets are $100 each, although it is for a good cause. -

no, haven't moved yet. The buyer is having our house put through an inspection next Thursday, a 3 hr thing. Next Wednesday we are driving to NC to meet with the builder and cabinet maker of the house we are buying.....we have serious problems with the cabinets. Seems like we are constantly busy with related things to the sale and buying of the houses...headaches. -

That is a tall order to name just one. My favorite is the Dark Tower Series but that contains more than one book. However, you could start with the first in the series. I also kinda favor the book "IT". -

Everything looks fine to me. I checked out a copy of the Nabokov - Speak Memory book at the library this afternoon. I doubt that I will be able to start much reading soon though as next week is pretty busy with getting "house move" stuff done plus I have an appt at the hospital Monday morning. Thanks Michelle. -

Shoot, I thought we were going to hold hands....and maybe sip a little wine. Ok, I will put a hold on the book at the library. You all must give me a head start though since I am such a slow reader. It would be nice if a few others on the forum joined in. 8-) I am having second thoughts. I intend on reading the book but I don't think it is such a good idea to give the impression of it being a reading group. There already is a Reading Circle and would not want to give the impression of "going-off-on-our-own" circle. -
Ok, is this the Nabokov book that I should start with. Believe it or not, I also have Jane Eyre on my TBR list, primarily due to the Jasper Fforde book on Thursday Next's adventure into Jane Eyre.

I believe this should solve your problem. http://www.botanical.com/botanical/cvcookix.html However, I could give you a pretty good recipe for Corn Bread from scratch rather than using the mix.

I have read one of his - I read OF MICE AND MEN last year and quite enjoyed it. Which others of his would be good also, or are they all fairly similar? Steinbeck is undoubtedly my favorite author of all time. Books of his that I have read to date: Grapes Of Wrath East Of Eden The Winter Of Our Discontent Of Mice And Men Tortilla Flat Cannery Row Sweet Thursday Red Pony The Wayward Bus The Moon Is Down The Pearl Travels With Charley Grapes of Wrath is really an epic and a fantastic book. It will leave you "wrung out". I also really liked The Moon Is Down. It is a book that really makes a person think and is one that I intend on re-reading one day. You cannot go wrong on any of his books though.

Welcome aboard. That is a pretty nice list of books read this year. May I suggest that you consider John Steinbeck for sometime in the future.

Freewheeling, I am sure there are a few people that will gladly help you reduce your inventory.

Recently, while cleaning out papers, etc, I found this old paper from when I was in the 3rd grade in school and was 8 yrs old. It was called; ABOUT YOURSELF 1. What is your name A. Edward XXXXXX 2. How old are you A. I am 8 years old 3. Where do you live A. I live in XXXXXX, Pennsylvania 4. What grade are you in A. I am in third grade 5. Who is your teacher A. My teacher is Miss Mannino (btw, she was my favorite teacher) 6. What lesson do you like best A. I like reading best 7. Which is your hardest lesson A. My hardest lesson is spelling. You need to keep in mind that the subjects they taught that many years ago were much easier than those taught today. In any case I though it was interesting that even that many years ago I was very interestd in reading.

I am about 2/3 finished reading "Cell". At this point I am really puzzled on how this book will end. No spoilers, please. I have driven through the part of Maine where many of the events took place in the Cell book. The same with some other of his books. It was a strange and uneasy feeling at the time.

Nice little shopping excursion muggle and you know how much I love DC. I'm jealous! BTW hubby and I have decided to build a new home. I'll email you the front running plans when I get them uploaded. Then we can have you guys over for dinner. Sounds great. I love to look at house plans and, if I must say so, am pretty good at interpreting them and frequently making suggestions. The wine I bought in DC was just a few bottles to sample so that I have a better idea of what to buy when they have their yearly wine sale which starts in mid-October.

It takes me a couple weeks to read a book. I am a very, very, slow reader. However, it doesn't bother me. Sometimes when reading I will stop after a page or two and start thinking about what I just read. I guess that is why my reading list is so small.

We were in Washington, DC today for our semi-annual Doctor's appointment and while there (in DC) bought some wine at our favorite Wine Shop: $12.99 Valminor - Albarino White Spain $12.99 Burgans - Albarino White Spain $11.99 NAIA Rueda - Verdejo White Spain $9.99 Mano A Mano - Tempranillo Spain $7.99 Vega Sindoa - Tempranillo / Merlot Spain $7.99 Torres Sangre de Toro The 2 bottles of Albarino are similar to the Nora white wine that I have raved about (recommended to me by Dogmatix) and the wine store rated these 2 wines higher than Nora...we shall see. The NAIA Rueda was recommended to me by the wine expert at the shop. The Mano A Mano red wine was also recommended to me by the same guy who also told me that the Sangre DE Toro doesn't sell much anymore due to the flood of better red wines from Spain....and I always used to enjoy the Toro.
