  1. Yeah, definitely. I used to read the Dick Francis books, but I couldn't imagine ever picking one up now. Before I joined BCF, chick-lit was my staple, but I hardly ever touch it these days, apart from Marian Keyes and the odd Jane Green (although lately JG's have been disappointing).
  2. Kell is a bit of a Narnia expert, and she recommends reading/listening to them in the order they're numbered on the spines... 1. The Magicians Nephew 2. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe 3. The Horse and His Boy 4. Prince Caspian 5. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader 6. The Silver Chair 7. The Last Battle She also says one can miss out number 3 and then read it at the end without mucking up the overall story! I've read 1, 2 and 3 in that order. I must get round to reading some more.
  3. Thanks for confirming that. It's always worked, so I guessed it probably wasn't just coincidence but I wasn't certain.
  4. Yay - welcome back kitty's mojo!
  5. Do these need to be read in order? There was one in our Children's Society charity shop for 75p on Tuesday (it looked brand new) but it was about number 12th!
  6. I'm excited too, Michelle!
  7. That's a shame. I remember it being very frustrating as when it happened to me it was one of the sites I visit most often!
  8. I had terrible problems getting on the Neighbours site I admin last year, but I could get onto other sites no problem. Eventually, I was advised to switch the router off for about 15 minutes and then switch it back on - which worked. I try it occasionally if I have problems with other sites and it seems to clear them. Of course, Beef will probably not say that what I'm doing has no effect and it must be coincidence, but it might be worth trying!
  9. I can't help, I'm afraid, but I did have problems with LJ yesterday and the day before. I kept getting timed out. When I eventually did get on, I had to log in again (normally it remembers me), so perhaps it's the site rather than your computer? Oh, and I use Firefox. Have you tried a different browser from your usual one?
  10. You genius! Thanks!
  11. I've started adding more books and I'm trying to rate them, but I can only get whole numbers. I know I can vote half, as one of the original books I listed I gave 4½ stars to. Can anyone help please?
  12. Because I gave I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith 3/10 and I disliked this more!
  13. I enjoy poetry. I've never fancied The Jungle Books, but when it came up as a reading circle choice I did think about reading them, but I guess I'm quite pleased I didn't buy them now! Sorry to go slightly off-topic, but did anyone see the excellent 'My Boy Jack' written by David Haig? Haig played Kipling (they do look quite similar!). It was about how Rudyard managed to push for his son John Kipling to fight in WW1, despite the fact that he was as blind as a bat. Inevitably, John was killed, but he was classed as 'Missing in Action' for a long time and the family searched and searched for him. My Boy Jack 'Have you news of my boy Jack?' Not this tide. 'When d'you think that he'll come back?' Not with this wind blowing, and this tide. 'Has any one else had word of him?' Not this tide. For what is sunk will hardly swim, Not with this wind blowing, and this tide. 'Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?' None this tide, Nor any tide, Except he did not shame his kind - Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide. Then hold your head up all the more, This tide, And every tide; Because he was the son you bore, And gave to that wind blowing and that tide! Rudyard Kipling (1915) Very moving.

    Cricket

I hated cricket until I started going out with my now husband and it was a case of love me, love my cricket! I eventually ended up doing the scorebook for the club he played for for a few years, which meant I really got to understand the game, which I think helps. I have to say I'm more of a fan of one day cricket/20Twenty games than test cricket though, although even that can get exciting towards the end.
  15. Eating for England by Nigel Slater 2
  16. Hello and welcome. Have fun!
  17. It's great as a freebie though!
  18. Like a Boots card. They did it as a trial in our area for three months and the rolled it out nationwide in September 2007. I love Waterstone's. I just adore the smell and atmosphere of it!
  19. I have too. They don't mind at all.
  20. A new edition is now out. Don't forget - it's free to Waterstone's loyalty card customers.

    radjack's TBR

Well, at the moment anyway! Hi radjack. You can edit your posts if you discover you need to change something. The edit button is at the bottom, right of your post.
  22. Oh, I don't doubt that. If my 'to read' pile was smaller I'd buy them sooner.
  23. I love QI. Specifically, I love Stephen Fry (although I fear he wouldn't feel the same about me!). I imagine this is the sort of book that will turn up in the Bookbarn in droves eventually (if they have one copy of Michael Palin's Around the World in 80 Days, they have 100!) so I might wait a while - or I may put it on my Christmas list.
  24. I have a signed Joanna Trollope. I bought it for my mother-in-law in a second-hand shop years ago (at least 10) but she already had it. I didn't know it was signed when I bought it.
