I haven't been in the 'Hey, what's up today?' thread for several days, but I've just read the last few pages and I wanted to say that I'm sorry someone upset you at work. :( It's good that you have an understanding boss. I hope today isn't too traumatic for you. :friends0:

  2. Sorry to hear the sad news about your Grandad. I hope you're okay. I'm thinking of you and Angel. :friends0:

  3. As the others have said, it's difficult to say happy birthday to you after your sad news so I'll just send good wishes to you. I'm thinking of you and Tiger. :friends0:

  4. I think there is a list of suggestions somewhere. Maybe on Wikipedia?
  5. Angel - did you watch the conclusion? Such a great piece of drama. I was really impressed with Ruth Jones. I've only seen her in Fat Friends (she was great in that) - I'm aware of her role in Gavin and Stacey although I've never seen it. I think her acting as Tess's mother was exceptional and just proves what a great actress she is. Poor Tess.
  6. I can't say I've heard of this author. I don't tend to read many crime type novels having overdosed on them in my mid-20s but I shall have a look on Amazon and see what I think.
  7. Me too! My friend's hubby had one for his birthday. He has a neurological condition which means that holding books for any length of time is a problem. This enables him to continue his love of reading. In that situation I think they're a Godsend, but I can't imagine not having my bookshelves. To me, having books in my lounge helps to dress it - I'd feel almost bereft without them!
  8. I've thought about doing this challenge too (or something Olympian, anyway) but it feels rather daunting. I might have to aim for 2016! I started a tentative list in 'Word' before I read A Thousand Splendid... for Afghanistan and All Quiet on the Western Front for Germany (a cross-over as it's part of my Reading Through The Decades challenge) but haven't posted it on here yet. Perhaps I should?
  9. Hi - and welcome to the Book Club Forum.

You won't be able to reply to this until you have made 10 posts, but I'm just letting you know that I moved your thread about the book you are looking for to the 'Looking for a Book' section which is a sub-forum of General Book Discussions.

Hopefully one of our members will recognise your synopsis and be able to help. :)

  10. Hi Alison. I'm good thanks. Just watching The Full Monty with my son. :) How're things with you? :)

    Merlin

I've never seen Buffy! He lives near me. Hubby sat opposite him on the train from London to Bath once!
  12. Yup - I think 'our' Karen has summed up my thoughts about SCD Karen perfectly.
  13. So pleased Gary went. He was dreadful - so wooden. Plus it means that Karen's gone - hurrah! Loving Tom and Austin. And John Sergeant of course! Andrew looked like a woodpecker last night doing that dreadful thing with his head!

    Merlin

Mmmm - but it's rather attractive, isn't it!

    You haven't been around for a while. I hope you're okay? :)

  16. Thanks for your suggestion. Sorry for the late reply - I think I must have accidentally marked the forum as read as I've only just seen this. I have Orwell's Coming Up For Air and Down and Out in Paris and London on my 'to read' pile already, both of which are from the 30s, so I'll probably go with one of those, but I've added your suggestion to my Amazon Wishlist as I like the sound of it too. Thanks again.
  17. I'll kick off - I'm from England. I was born in All Saints Hospital Chatham and lived in Higham, Kent for the first (nearly) 22 years, when I moved to Somerset after my marriage.
  18. Obviously we can't cover all the options, so if we've missed your country out then please don't be offended. You have an 'other' option so please tick that and then post your answer in the thread. If you now live in a different country from that in which you were born, please tell us about it.
  19. Escape was just gripping! 8/10 Not sure what to read next. Probably Englby by Sebastian Faulks
  20. One of those 'white covered' books - a true story of someone's terrible suffering - this is not the sort of book I'd usually buy. But, I have to say, I found it compelling. I read it in just two days, which is quick compared to my usual reading speed because I kept reading 'just one more chapter' to find out what's going to happen next. It's about a woman who was brought up as a Fundamentalist Mormon (FLDS) who is given for a polygamist marriage at 18 to a man 30 years her senior. She is mentally abused by him and his other wives and has to submit to sex with him in order to survive. She bears him 8 children. After discovering that her 12 year-old daughter has spent 3 nights at the home of one of the elders, she realises she and her children must try to escape... Gripping stuff! 8/10
  21. Nice to see you back online. :):friends0:

  22. I've just started this book. I probably wouldn't have picked it up, but it's our next 'Bookworms' choice and I'm certain it will provoke some good discussion!
  23. Finished All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque yesterday (8/10). Now moving on to Escape by Carolyn Jessop The 'blurb' (from Amazon)
  24. Finished All Quiet... yesterday. What a great book. Two decades down, eight to go!
  25. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque The
