  1. Malicious Intent from the info inside the cover.
  2. It's the second in a series involving the main character but I haven't found it a problem that I haven't read the first. If I enjoy it I may look up the first one as well. Will let you know if it's any good
  3. Because my place is upside down right now I decided to read the first book I came across which happened to be Without Consent ~ Katherine Fox All of the victims have a blade-shaped bruise on their chests. All heard the rapist utter the words 'If you can't be hurt you can't be loved'. And all were told they would die if they went to the police. Forensic physician Dr Anya Crichton is on the trail of a violent serial rapist. When two women are later found stabbed to death in apparently frenzied attacks, police suspicion immediately falls upon Geoffrey Willard, recently released from twenty years in prison for the brutal rape and murder of a fourteen-year-old girl. Unravelling the forensic evidence, however, Anya's just not sure...
  4. I managed to snaffle my mums copy of The Crimson Petal and The White ~ Michel Faber to read the last 10 pages. Sugar, an alluring, nineteen-year-old prostitute in the brothel of the peculiar Mrs Castaway, yearns for a better life. And when she is visited by William Rackham, the somewhat reluctant heir to Rackham Perfumeries, she begins an ascent through the strata of 1870's London society that offers us intimacy with a host of loveable, maddening and superbly realised characters. Gripping from the first page, this hugely accalimed novel is an intoxicating and deeply satisfying read - not only a wonderful story but the creation of an entire, extraordinary world. Very impressed with this book, despite the ending being a bit abrupt. Highly recommended, don't be put off by the size (800+ pages)
  5. I was like this, I watched the first 2 episodes when it was shown on Sci-Fi earlier this year, I just wasn't that interested. All the boys at work loved it and obtained the rest of the series from USA. It's all they talked about for months. Apparantly it does get much better and I should have stuck at it
  6. I have a funky new one that my mum bought for me, it's a Bagpuss one and it's a magnetic tab that you slip over the page you're on. It's really cute and it supports a good cause (asthma uk)
  7. Glad to hear of another fan, I adore this book. I do have the next book Eldest sat on my shelf, I started to read it when it first came out and then got distracted by moving house. There is no rush though, he hasn't finished writing the final book yet
  8. There is definately the threat that this could of been much scarier for adults. Glad he kept it for kids though (just)
  9. I sold nothing for ages and then I've sold four in a few weeks. It's a great idea for getting rid of books you won't read again and for finding those books you want.
  10. I also just started this one last night, I'm already hooked.
  11. I love RISI, I would recommend it to anyone. I just love getting books in the post though
  12. Finally I managed to finish this one last night, it's taken me ages as I just haven't had much reading time. Now that it is finished I'm not quite as taken with the story anymore, especially the last 100 pages it got really boring. I loved the Iron Age aspect of the story but it got to the point where I didn't care about the modern day characters. Unfortunately I'm not sure if I will be reading any more Barbara Erskine, but never say never
  13. I've nearly finished reading this one and I am quite impressed. This is my first Barbara Erskine book, it took me a while to get into the story and her writing style but it has been a great read. The main characters, especially the historical ones, were a great read.
  14. There have only been 2 books I gave full marks to so far and they are Kevin Brockmeier ~ The Brief History Of The Dead (5/5) and John Grogan ~ Marley and Me (5/5) Many have almost hit the mark but these were definately the best reads of the year os far.
  15. I have Innocent Traitor just added to my bookshelf to be read and I can't recommend the Posie Graeme-Evans books enough, I read all three last year and they were fantastic. They really gave me a taste for the genre, easliy as good as Philippa Gregory. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
  16. It's taken me until 150 pages in to really start enjoying it, I was still undecided after the first couple of chapters. However, the story is fantastic and the supernatural-esque elemant really adds to it.
  17. I eventually decided to try Barbara Erskine ~ Daughters of Fire. This is one I picked up in Waterstones on a 3 for 2 offer last month, and I haven't read anything by Barbara Erskine before so I'm quite looking forward to it. The Romans are landing in Britannia... Cartimandua, the young woman destined to rule the great tribe of the Brigantes, watches invaders come ever closer. From the start her world is a maelstrom of love and conflict, revenge and retribution. Cartimandua's life becomes more turbulant and complicated as her power grows, and her political skills are threatened by her personal choices. She has formidable enemies on all sides as she faces a decision which will change the future of all around her. In the present day, historian Viv Lloyd Rees has immersed herself in the legends surrounding the Celtic queen. Viv struggles to hide her visions of Cartimandua and her conviction that they are real. But her obsession becomes ever more persistent as she takes possession of an ancient brooch that carries a curse. Bitter rivalries and overwhelming passions are reawakened as past envelops present and Viv finds herself in the greatest danger of her life.
  18. Thanks mum, and everyone else too
  19. I finally managed to finish this book and I'm still a bit lost as to what I think of it. The most part was a very enjoyable read, but I was quite bored during some of the lesser active chapters and I didn't feel it moved fast enough for my liking. I did feel for the characters though, each in their own individual circumstances. 1- Who was your favourite character and why? I did like Mellors, even though some of the time I didn't quite understand where he was coming from. He was a loveable rogue and he made me laugh quite a bit. 2- Was there a particular part you enjoyed/disliked more than the rest? I found the mens discussions in the early part of the book very boring and I was sorely tempted just to bypass them but on the other hand I enjoyed Connie's personal thoughts whilst out a wandering on her own. 3- Was this the first book you've read in this genre/ by this author, has it encouraged you to read more? This was my first DH Lawrence book but not my first classic. I may look for further reading along the same lines in the future. 4- Were there any parts/ideas you struggled with? My only real problem was Connie and Mellor's first 'encounter' with each other, it just came out of the blue and there seemed to be no real reason behind it. There was no tension between them or any build up that I noticed. 5- Overall, was reading the book an enjoyable experience? Overall, I did enjoy this book, even though I wouldn't say it was a fantastic read.
  20. I finished Lady Chatterley's Lover and I'm still in two minds about this book. Part of me loved the descriptive writing and very emotional state of the characters but the other part of me was bored with the lack of real story and bits of the story that didn't add up for me. Maybe it's one I need to think on.
  21. So far I'm only up to ch7 in this one, it's taking me ages to read and at times is feeling a bit of a chore. This doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it though, because I am, it's just some paragraphs I feel are a bit lengthy for the poing he's trying to get across. However, I do agree with the point about it feeling very feminine. If I had ne previous author knowledge I would assume it was a woman. I get a feeling that although Constance does all the things women were supposed to do (such as sitting in the room but not talking) there is an underlying mockery of the whole setup, as if DHL thought such practices funny.
  22. I have the Penguin version, a naked female torso covered with leaves. It's a bit obscure, but eye catching at the same time.
  23. definately cat confidential, I'm not that difficult to live with
  24. Cat Confidential is all finished now, and what a great book it was. So much information crammed into one easy to read book that regularly brought a smile to my face (even on a crowded bus ) Definately recommended for the cat lover wanting to understand their furry friend. I will now be making a start on the reading circle book for this month, D.H. Lawrence ~ Lady Chatterley's Lover
  25. This is one of those books that you never knew if you were 'allowed' to read it or not. It's amazing that it was banned for so long and the effects one book can have.
