  1. Great review PrincessPonti, this is one of my all time favourites too. This story captured my imagination far more than any of the other child-aimed books I've read in a long time. And don't you just love Saphira.
  2. You can read my copy if you want mum, I started it a while back and just couldn't get into it. I have it on hold until I can start it again.
  3. Have decided to pick up Vladimir Nabokov ~ Lolita So far so good.
  4. Still not bought any books Don't know what to read next though.....
  5. I am also one of the supporters of this book. It really stuck with me and although it did take a bit to get 'into' the style, I was gripped and I have to say quite shocked by it. A fantastic book in my eyes.
  6. I love Rebecca, I had a look at the film on BBC2 but it didn't fit in with my own version of the book (in my head) so I turned it off. I have read a couple of other DdM books but nothing grabbed me as much as Rebecca. I also enjoyed Rebecca's Tale by Sally Beauman (?), I read that before Rebecca and it kind of added something to the story for me.
  7. I'm only up to Industrial Magic in the series but I have enjoyed the others so far. The stories are better and better the further into the series you get.
  8. Mmmm I may invest when I am allowed to buy more new books. I'm feeling a trip to Borders coming on.....
  9. Doing well, haven't purchased any books since I said I wouldn't. Not even second hand ones, although I have been in Waterstones twice and the Oxfam bookshop. It's very hard though.... Haven't been able to do any reading cuz I'm doin stoooopid work instead
  10. Where did you get Walking Ollie from? I was looking at it in Waterstones the other day but O's said I couldn't have it as the last dog book made me cry.
  11. I finished Alias Grace and loved it, I have now moved onto The Game ~ Mandasue Heller as I couldn't take a hardback book in the bath with me. So far so good though, I like her style of story telling. Mary James is a bright, confident, rebellious teenager who never sticks to the rules. Thrown out of her family home on the notorious Crescents estate, she learns how tough life can be. Then Lynne meets Ali and Raiz, drug addicts desperate for alibis for murder, and Mary finds herself involved in a far more dangerous game.
  12. I've just finished my copy of this today and loved it. I wasn't expecting as much detail and history as was put in there but it definately made for a brilliant read. My own personal opinion was that the parts with Dr Jordan were perhaps unnecessary but still readable anyway.
  13. Does winning them count????? Still reading Alias Grace, it's taking me longer than anticipated as it keeps getting busy at work and I've also been working on some other stuff for the supervisors. Hoping to finish this one this week as I have a mountain of others just begging to be read.
  14. I only read this one a couple of weeks ago so I won't be re-reading it this time. I will join in with the discussions though. Hope you all enjoy this one, I did. I'd never read any other books by Maggie O'Farrell before but I'm actively seeking them out now. A great story for you all....
  15. my TBR pile is actually now a TBR bookcase, it's topped 80 books now so I'm going to try my hardest not to aquire any more until it's dropped some. I may need some help though....... [takes a deep breath.....]
  16. A couple more to add that arrived from Aromaannie yesterday, Jonathon Nasaw ~ 27 Bones, Fear Itself I promise to read more before I buy any more books brand new ones anyway
  17. Just updated my TBR mountain with the books I bought the other day, Keith Dobohue ~ The Stolen Child, James Robertson ~ The Testament of Gideon Mack, John Connolly ~ The Book of Lost Things There was one more but I can't remember what it's called, I will have to wait until O's finishes reading it.
  18. Good choice, I have that one to read soon as well.
  19. I know I wanted it a while ago and can't remember if I read it or not We'll see when it arrives....
  20. Was very very very naughty today and spent amount of money in Waterstones. Well, the money was burning a hole in my bank account and it is payday this week..... Amongst others I picked up 19 minutes ~ Jodi Picoult which I'm really looking forward to and it was half price too.... bargain. I can't quite remember what the other books were but I'll update my list later.
  21. I bought this one today, O's has been after it for a while and I will be reading it shortly.
  22. I have decided to give Margaret Atwood ~ Alias Grace a go seen as everyone else is In 1843, a 16-year-old Canadian housemaid named Grace Marks was tried for the murder of her employer and his mistress. The sensationalistic trial made headlines throughout the world, and the jury delivered a guilty verdict. Yet opinion remained fiercely divided about Marks- -was she a spurned woman who had taken out her rage on two innocent victims, or was she an unwilling victim herself, caught up in a crime she was too young to understand? Such doubts persuaded the judges to commute her sentence to life imprisonment, and Marks spent the next 30 years in an assortment of jails and asylums, where she was often exhibited as a star attraction. In Alias Grace, Margaret Atwood reconstructs Marks's story in fictional form. Her portraits of 19th-century prison and asylum life are chilling in their detail.
  23. We are quite lucky in Preston, we have the PDSA which is great but only have a few books, then across the road we have the Heart Foundation which has more books but can be pricey for the condition. We also have an Oxfam Bookshop and Cancer Research which I frequent as often as possible. The best part though is a car boot on the open market every Tue and Thur. It's a goldmine for books. Blackpool has a great selection of charity shops too and they're all on the same street.
  24. 78 I suppose I should spend more time reading them instead of buying them.........
  25. Just another quick update to the ol' TBR pile. I picked up Fallen Skies ~ Philppa Gregory on the car boot for 50p. (another bargain ) and a couple more swaps arrived today so I'm happy. As a pennance I did update my swaps list and added a few more books to RISI. Such a good girl am I.
