That's alright though - I have a massive pile of TBRs, so it's not like I'm stuck for choice.

I gave up on The Queen of Tambourine, as I just wanted to slap the main character & I couldn't get to grips with why she felt she had to write those letters in the first place. I just didn't give enough of a damn to bother reading on to find out as I was so heartily bored with it at less than a quarter of the way through. So, I decided to try Eragon, which is the other reading circle choice for this month, but I'm now having difficulties getting into that one too! I've never really been into sword-&-sorcery type fantasy & have always found the strange names that these characters always seem to have faintly ridiculous. If it doesn't grab me very soon, I'll be getting shot of this one quick-smart & moving onto something else instead.

I'm not doing very well with the reading circle choices this month at all! After giving up on The Queen of Tambourine, I'm considering doing the same with Eragon. I've never really been into the Sword-&-Sorcery type of fantasy novels at all, & all this talk of dragons & elves is already turning me off big time. Add to that all the wierd names that are already cropping up & it's adding up to something I'm really not enjoying so far. I'll persevere a while longer, but if I don't get into it soon, I'm afraid I'll have to leave this one too.

James Patterson / Patricia Cornwell.. correct order?
Kell replied to boris's topic in Crime / Mystery / Thriller
We tried reading one ofPatricia Cornwall's Scarpetta novels in the reading circle, but as it was one of the later ones, it wasn't much good for those of us who hadn't read the rest of the series, so I'd say definitely read those ones in order. I've never read any James Patterson though, so I'm afraid I can't really help you on that one. -
No, I'm afraid I can't continue with this book. The character of Eliza is annoying me way too much & I can't figure out why she would persist in sending these letters to Joan. My mind is wandering & I really just want to be reading anything else but this - I'm just not getting into it or enjoying it at all. I'm going to witch over to Eragon instead.

Ithaka was wonderful & I followed it up with The Tale of the Miller's Daughter by JoSelle Vanderhooft, which was an absolute joy to read. I now have a stack of reviews to write up - 8 in total - so I'm going to be rather busy this next wee while I think!
-
I've only read a few letters at the beginning so far & already I think that Eliza is in severe need of a good slapping! If someone kept sending me little notes like this about things going on my my personal life, I'd be giving them a stern talking to & telling them to kindly but-out of my life! And if they persisted, I think I'd be getting a restraining order as it's a bit creepy & stalker-esque. I am, however, intrigued as to where the author will go with this, so I'm going to keep on reading... just as soon as I get 5 minutes to myself! Actually, the short letters format makes it very easy to dip in & out of for a few minutes at a time.

Have just had a bumper morning for books arriving - one small package containing a book to review directly for the author, & another very large box containing 15 books from CBUK to be reviewed over the next wee while. I can see I'm going to be kept busy with these for quite some time!

I'll maybe take it back out of my swap box then... I really enjoyed 24 Hours, but I never got round to reading Dead Sleep & I have so many I thought "I'll just pop it ni the swap box then". It's coming out now for sure...

I read Ther Call fo Cthulu years & years ago, as my then boyfriend was very much into Lovecraft & had recommended it, but I wasn't taken by it at all. I keep meaning to go back & try some of his other works to see if I like them any better, but I've not got round to it yet. Perhaps this is the push I need!

I'm dying to read this one - I'm a HUGE AF fan & have all the books in my permanent collection, They're actually the reason I held off on reading the Harry Potter books - I figured nothing could be as good as the AF books! I love HP, but I love AF more!

I have a copy of Wideacre coming to me from Green Metropolis. I'm paying

I'm glad you enjoyed it so much - I read it as one of the Posh Club reading choices & we all rather liked it there - it's such a gentle book that seeps into you - & such a quick read too!

I'll be geting hold of it for sure, in the meantime, i'll be popping your book in the post back to you this weekend. Thanks for the lend - I loved it!

Finished The Big OVer Easy - really enjoyed it a lot. I'll definitely be getting hold of more Jasper Fforde novels! Then I read Vampire Muontain, the 4th in the Saga of Darren Shan series - every bit as good as the first three. I shall have to continue getting hold of the rest of these books as & when I can! Also finished Captives by Tom Pow (for CBUK), which was good, but not as good as I thought it might be. Now reading Ithaka by Adele Geras (for CBUK) which so far looks very interesting. It's related to The Odyssey, but it's the story of the women left at home. I'm guessing it's a bit like The Penelopeiad (which I've not read) but aimed at kids in their early to mid teens. I'll let you know how I get on with it...

Now that's interesting! How on earth did you get involved in something like that?

I know, I just couldn't understand the workings of the Emperor's mind that set such a task in order to ascertain who would be best to rule - LOL!
-
I know a few friends who have read it & raved about it, which is why I got hold of it myself. Perhaps it was just too built-up in my mind & I expected something different.

The Tale of Two Bad Mice by Beatrix Potter was always (& remains to this day) one of my favourites. My Dad got me a tiny little hardback copy of this book when I was just a tot & I still have it now. Hunka Munka (the mouse) is my favourite Potter character, ranking even above Mrs Tiggywinkle! The pictures in that book are absolutely magical. I took a ceramics class when I was a teenager & actually painted Hunka Munka straight frmo the book. Managed to sell her for a fair bit too! It's the first book I remember being delighted about.

I tried reading Sabriel, but didn't get too far into it before jacking it in, maybe about a third of the way in. It just didn't grab me at all. I've not read any other Garth Nix books as a direct result - it put me right off.

I’ve been busying myself with those short stories and have now finished the following: The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe The Magic Shop by H G Wells The Jilting of Jane by H G Wells The Door in the Wall by H G Wells Have also just finished Vampire Mountain by Darren Shan (the 4th book in The Saga of Darren Shan), which proved every bit as good as the first three – I’m very impressed – it ended on such a cliff-hanger that I’m dying to get hold of the 5th one now! Next on the list, however, is Captives by Tom Pow, which I’ll be reviewing for CBUK. It looks like it could be good…

I've read a few books by Celia Rees & enjoy her style. She's full of really good stories & tells them very well.

I had the same problem, Kat - I didn't think it was anywhere near as good & I really felt nothing in particular for Alys - didn't like her enough to sympathise, didn't dilike her enough to really hate her - it meant I wasn't all that interested in anything that happened to her.
-
Thanks, Mugglenot - I've been thinking I'll read them, as I'm liking this one so much.

I loved the Michael J Fox one - I got it for Xmas a few years back & was so moved by it!
