  1. I'm just popping in to say that I changed from Netflix to LoveFilm - it's a little more expensive at £7.99 a month, but for that I get unlimited streaming, plus the DVDs sent out. They've added lots of TV series now from what I can see, including the whole of Lost!
  2. Hi Loni.. Please check our promotional policy. Thanks.

  3. 2001 is mentioned here. I did a search, and was amazed we don't have a specific thread for him.. but it looks as if lots of people have mentioned him in their threads, so you might get some response. Personally, I know I've read a few of his, but I can't remember exactly which ones. Apart from the Rama series, which I thought was brilliant.
  4. Gad, can you please provide some more details if you're going to start a new thread - some further info about the book, and a few more of your own thoughts would be good.

  6. Mortal Chaos - http://www.bookclubforum.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/9932-mortal-chaos-by-matt-dickinson/
  7. This is a great concept for a book, and should appeal to teenagers. In fact, once I finished, I took it straight to my teenage daughter, who's a very reluctant reader. The reason for this is the format - there are very short chapters, often less that a page, which makes the book much less intimidating. In addition however, once the action gets going, it moves along at a fast pace, so it's impossible to get bored. The book starts off with a butterfly, and it's affect on a rabbit. From here, it jumps to a few different people, who are all connected in some way. The action flicks between these people and their situations, leading to it's climax. It makes you consider the effect we can have on other people, with even the smallest of actions, and there's plenty for adults as well as children. There is apparently a series of books planned - I have to say that as much as I loved this one, there will have to be something a bit different in the next to keep me interested. I look forward to finding out!
  8. The Eddings one was The Redemption of Althalus, and I loved Faerie Tale by Feist. I'll look at the others later.
  9. Hmm.. looks interesting! Speaks The Nightbird looks good - has anyone read that?
  10. Ok, I shall take a look. I've already decided to avoid that series - I don't think I have enough time! Magician.. I'm sure I've looked at that one, and didn't reallt fancy it. I think it's the heroic ones I'm so keen on. David Gemmel rings a bell.. I may have tried something of his a few years back. I'll look through amazon later and see if anything looks familiar. I did like Neverwhere, although I've not liked any of his others. Again, I'll take a look. Eddings.. that also sounds familiar. Did he write one with his wife, about a sword? I remember really liking that one, but it was years ago. Wow - that's given me a lot to think about, I'll let you know when I've taken a better look!
  11. Thank you! I shall take a look at the weekend.

  13. I'm looking for some help from our lovely fantasy specialists. Over the past couple of years I have loved The Painted Man and The Desert Spear by Peter V Brett, Dragon Keeper and Dragon Haven by Robin Hobb, and The Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson (not quite finished). I think I've liked these because there's been something new and unique about them (well, to me, at least, as I haven't read that many ) as well as being set in a familiar but different world. So, can anyone suggest something similar for me to try next?

Welcome.. I've moved your post to the Introduction forum, where it'll be spotted.
  15. It's part of my job description, to force people into buying books - and it's so I don't feel alone when I do it! The Snow Child is a gentle book which is easy to read, so I hope you get on ok with it. I'm also going to recommend the book I'm reading at the moment - I haven't finished it yet, so I'm not sure how it's going to end, but I'm certainly having trouble putting it down! It's Mortal Chaos by Matt Dickinson.
  16. It kept cropping up on Twitter.. I follow a lot of authors, publishers etc with the BCF account. The publisher very kindly sent me a copy to review.
  17. My review of The Snow Child: It’s 1920, and Jack and Mabel have moved to Alaska, to start a new life and leave their memories behind. However, Jack struggles to control the wild land, and Mabel struggles to forget the grief of her stillborn, and they seem to move further apart. As the first snow falls, they find an unexpected closeness, and end up out in the snow, building a snowman.. or rather a snow girl. In the morning this snow girl has disappeared, and they start to catch glimpses of tracks, and a figure which looks like a small child. Many reviewers are calling this book ‘magical’, and it does have that feel to it. The landscape and environment is vivid and harsh, and yet the snowy atmosphere adds it’s own magical touch. Eowyn never quite explains the child either, it’s left to the reader to decide if she has a real background, or a magical beginning. This is a tale partly about Faina, the Snow Child of the story, but is also about Jack and Mabel, their new life, and their relationships. It’s about survival, grief, friendship and love, and it’s a simple but moving tale. Highly recommended.
  18. Ok, Advent read and reviewed - http://bcfreviews.wordpress.com/2012/02/15/advent-james-treadwell/ Every Vow You Break was really good, review to follow. Linda Gillard's book was of course also really good, and I preferred it to House of Silence. It's not published yet, so I'll review it later when it is. The Snow Child was a lovely book - again, review to follow as soon as I get my act together! I've almost finished the second Mistborn novel on audio, and I'm loving it.

  23. I've signed up but not used it much yet. The films are older ones.. I would suggest signing up for the free trial to see what's available. I've only used my iPad so far, and it's been fine, I've got Sky Internet. By the way, it's all streamed, you can't download.
