  1. It's different, but growing on me - I think it will look nicer when Athena redoes the skin for us, as it looked so nice before.
  2. If you look up the top, it says Online Users. The bit which showed the last 24 hours was an add-on, and we need to make sure the basics are working first, before we look at any extras.
  3. I'm trying this out as a Question and Answer forum - we can see how it goes, and if it's useful, then if it doesn't work well, we can change it back. Please feedback in this thread whether you find it useful, or whether it's just too confusing!
  4. I'm not sure what you mean - if anyone *has* read her books, then they will respond to your post. However, please remember that there are countless authors out there, so there's a chance no one has read anything by her. You are limited until you have 10 posts. What would you like it changed to?
  5. This was posted by someone on twitter - she's not found the book yet, so I thought I'd ask our brilliant bookworms here.. She says published 90s or earlier.
  6. I ended up staying up late to finish this one.. definitely lots of twists and turns! It's definitely one to think and talk about though!
  7. There is a great female character in A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab - along with lots of other great characters and a brilliant story!
  8. Unfortunately I didn't get on very well with This Savage Song, despite loving everything else I've read of hers! I think it had more of a YA feel to it. I would say that the Darker Shades series has a slight YA feel to it, if you compare it to some other fantasy titles, but for me that works perfectly. Vicious is a much darker book.. and I'm happy that she's writing a sequel for that one. Looks like something else I need to go look up.....!
  9. I may have just ordered Nightwalker... don't tell anyone!
  10. I'm at 10 books (and one graphic novel) now, so averaging a book a week, which is fine. Most recent was A Conjuring of Light by VE Schwab, which was an excellent finish to her Darker Shades series. I took a break half way through the second book, but it's second half was actually really good.. and this final book was excellent. The series is definitely up there in my favourites!
  11. Claire, I'm sorry! (But they are good! ) Madeleine, no, they're not YA.
  12. They really are good.. although I preferred slightly the first to the second. Lady Trent is a great character, with an excellent wit, and they highlight how life was for women back around Victorian times.. and with dragons!!
  13. Elliot's mum is ill and his home is under threat, but a shooting star crashes to earth and changes his life forever. The star is Virgo - a young Zodiac goddess on a mission. But the pair accidentally release Thanatos, a wicked death daemon imprisoned beneath Stonehenge, and must then turn to the old Olympian gods for help. After centuries of cushy retirement on earth, are Zeus and his crew up to the task of saving the world - and solving Elliot's problems too? I don't review many books at the moment, but when I heard about this one, I couldn't resist.. and I'm glad I didn't! I've always been a fan of the various myths and legends, and I love seeing the gods reimagined in a fun way. There is a lot of humour in this book, with everyone being brought up to date.. the gods are have been made more human and flawed, whilst retaining a real warmth. In the midst of the humour is the serious side of being a child carer.. Elliot has to look after his mum, taking on the worries of her health, every day life and their financial concerns, whilst also dealing with his school life.. it's an excellent way to highlight this issue. This would make a great book for reading to children at bedtime, as it provides plenty of humour for adults too, as well as for older children (and even some adults!) to read by themselves. I'm looking forward to the next instalment.
  14. I'm getting behind already... I've listened to Wishful Drinking and The Princess Diaries by Carrie Fisher. She narrates themselves, so it was sad listening to someone no longer with us. Her sense of humour shines through, and her snippets of writing she shares from her younger years certainly show a good writer. I've also discovered a great new series, The Lady Trent Memoirs by Marie Brennan. They are set in an alternative Victorian-type world where dragons exist.. and the covers are just gorgeous! I've read 2 so far, and will certainly be working my way through the series. Who Let the Gods Out will be reviewed soon, and last night I whizzed through The New Hunger by Isaac Marion, the prequel to Warm Bodies. I was disappointed on how short it is, with 176 pages and quite large print. It was an enjoyable read though, and I'm now moving on to The Burning World, which is the sequel. And yep, a couple of these I've bought.. but that was with the amazon gift card from my girls for my birthday.
  15. I've just read this too - I also loved the way she highlighted young carers in amongst the fun.
  16. I did take a look at Watchman last year, but it didn't grab me. Into 2017, I've read Marvel 1602 by Neil Gaiman, which I really enjoyed.. it's interesting seeing the usual characters handled in a different way and different setting.
  17. As I said, it's a long time ago that I read them, and I can't remember any details, but I have a memory of God being portrayed very negatively, and I believe, killed? If I didn't have such a big TBR, it would be interesting to go back and re-read, now I'm older, and have some different views. There does seem to be a lot of sites discussing it if you search, but many are Christian sites, so obviously are going to be biased. There is, however, his own words.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/His_Dark_Materials
  18. I took a look at the fan made trailer in this article, and suddenly the idea of a female doctor seems an excellent one.. http://www.cultbox.co.uk/features/opinion/could-game-of-thrones-star-natalie-dormer-be-the-thirteen-doctor
  19. It was a long time ago that I read them - I loved the first one, especially the ideas of the daemons, but I did struggle with just how anti-religion he made the last one. As said above, it's really put me off.
  20. Have you seen this version Noll.. http://www.adamlgnevill.com/ritual-limited-shop/
  21. Stop panicking people, it's a joke!
  22. That's very true about the banners.. you need to click on them, and then go on to buy something, and I then get a tiny percentage. I've tried different book stores, but just haven't been able to make it work. I refuse to add great big adverts, especially those which pop up when you visit, because they annoy me so much on other sites. The supporter fee is only £10 for a year, and it hasn't changed since I started it up. I'm not sure reducing would make much difference. I've had a fair response this time round, and I really appreciate it.. as it means I can help out with server costs.
