  1. That is, and always has been, my particular saviour. I do sometimes get interested in the football and do a bit of shouting at the TV, but not always.
  2. Have abandoned Shirley Jackson's Hangsaman and started Knut Hamsun's Mysteries.
  3. The Nutcracker is a great story and that's a good idea, as is a Christmas fantasy.
  4. Children's Christmas Stories - I'm thinking The Snow Queen, The Steadfast Tin Soldier by Hans Christian Andersen etc Classic Christmas Stories - children's or otherwise
  5. The paperback is now available on Amazon : Project Hail Mary
  6. I'm in. Categories : A Christmas Ghost Story - doesn't have to be A Christmas Carol but can be if you want Christmas poetry. Modern or otherwise. A Christmas Mystery (why not?) Some more later, possibly
  7. I did not know that you could get a translated version. Will look for this. ETA I did! So thanks for that.
  8. Here's another favourite of mine. It's by the punk poet John Cooper Clarke and it contains language than may be offensive to you. It does have a title but (if you listen to it) the title's on the clip and you'll hear the title at the end of the poem. For this reason I'll post it in a link and you can make up your own mind (please note that there is no blasphemy or profanity in this) John Cooper Clarke
  9. Another favourite of mine is Lord Ullin's Daughter by Thomas Campbell but I can't find a clip of it that I like.
  10. This is such a good idea! I love Desiderata, this is the one that I'm most familiar with :
  11. Read The Sound and the Fury in BGO group read, got The Invisible Man and got halfway through Geek Love and gave up. Just finished The Omen. Old fashioned by today's standards but a great book
  12. I loved Dracula too. Just finished The Omen by David Seltzer.
  13. I have to be honest, I nearly lost the will to live scanning what I had and am grateful that it wasn't a thousand. I'm up to 768 books altogether but that includes the e-books that I bought this year (but not all). It did lead to a big clear out, which was great. Thank you, it sounds very sensible, although I'm not so sure I'd have the willpower either.
  14. I thought that I had around a thousand books too until I bought an app that I could scan them all into and hopefully keep track of what I own so the I didn't buy the same one. As a result I gave away many books that I knew I would not read and found that I didn't have that many. However, the collection has now grown and I've run out of space for physical books so have turned to Kindle. Not quite 200 on Kindle yet but I'm getting there. I like the sound of the money in the jar method and may just steal it from you!
  15. I feel it's been a success too. And I've very much enjoyed the recitations and animations of Victorian poetry on Youtube, especially The Wind That Shakes The Barley, (I've never heard of that and it was just lovely). I will finish Hiawatha, though.
  16. We seem to be having constant rain. Except, for a change, when we go out. It's warm for the time of year, here but the rain makes it feel chilly
  17. Started reading The Omen. Spawned (literally) scary movies for TV during the seventies, which looking back on it I shouldn't have been allowed to watch. I'm not sure I'll stick with Hangsaman, Shirley Jackson. It's not holding my interest.
  18. @KEV67 these clips are astonishing! Thank you for posting. I'm still reading Hiawatha, it is great though.
  19. Managed to get my father out to the dentist and the podiatrist this week. He's slowly getting to grips with getting out and about after lockdown and it's a lot easier because we don't need to wear a mask now. I had my hair cut at the local barber's. They can do what I want, without an appointment, in a third of the time and at a third of the price. I positively hate hairdressers so this is ideal for me. Then we had home made cake from the local bakery, bliss!
  20. I'm making progress on Hiawatha. Just reading a section at a time, I'm on page 172 of 267. It's brilliant!
  21. I read about half of the first Dark Tower series and didn't like it. But, I got 40% off IT and that's all that was needed.
