  1. Currently reading The Asylum For Wayward Victorian Girls by Emilie Autumn
  2. Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale. This is a book about two women in whose lives books are more important than anything. One is a woman who grows up in a bookshop and learns the trade and who personally reads a great deal and authors some obscure papers and the other woman is a successful and famous author. What we read about is the life of the first one until she meets the second one and then we get both their lives. The second woman wants the first to write her biography. It's a fantastic tale, about two sets of twins and the thirteenth tale, supposed to be in an already published book, which is never written down but becomes available. It suited my Gothic preferences and was utterly compelling. I only wish I'd read it earlier. Well plotted, well written and all of the answers given at the end. Recommended.
  3. I would hope so. The last contact I had with the Church of Scotland (28 years ago) that particular minister was the same pig-ignorant, bad mannered, selfish, narrow-minded, bigoted, arrogant piece of work that I’ve come to expect from their clergy - I spoke to a neighbour and she said that that particular minister was indeed so afflicted, I had thought it was just me. During that time I encountered a Catholic priest who, young though he was, was extremely warm and understanding (we’re not Catholic, it’s a long story). The contrast was astonishing. I will never attend the Church of Scotland again. Not considering Catholicism either.
  4. Ritchie Blackmore - guitarist - was a founding member of the Hard Rock band Deep Purple. After he left them he formed another Hard Rock band called Rainbow (this is where I became aware of him) and now he's gone all folk with his wife Candice Night. He's 80 now!
  5. I always hated going to church. My mother made us when we were children and I had to be dressed just so. I never, ever understood that. I refused to go again, at the age of 6, and, aside from family events, have never gone back. I am assuming that the churches in England are different to the Church of Scotland, although the wedding ceremony was more or less the same, without bag-pipes.
  6. Currently reading The Thirteenth Tale, Diane Setterfield
  7. I had to rest yesterday as I was taking my father for a scan today so did the majority of the reading then
  8. Finished! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
  9. Shadow in the Moonlight, Santa Montefiore for the current group read
  10. Now reading this and enjoying it.
  11. Thanks for this, it’s right up my street and an author I’ve never read before. Bought!
  12. Maurice, E M Forster. Thanks to Books do Furnish a Room
  13. Hell House Richard Matheson This is a great book! Very atmospheric and good old fashioned horror. I believed the characters and even the supernatural elements that went into the story. I was also caught by surprise a couple of times, which is unusual. I was a little disappointed in the ending though but don’t have any suggestions as to how to make that better. I will be seeking out other books by this author, having read I Am Legend too. Recommended
  14. Yes, I saw that.
  15. Lovely!
  16. If Trump doesn’t make changes so that he can stay in power.
  17. I’m not really good with short stories, despite enjoying H E Bates, so have embarked on Hell House by Richard Matheson as an accompaniment.
  18. The Complete Silas Stories, H E Bates on e-book
  19. Julius, Daphne du Maurier. The life story of the titular character, who can only be described as a psychopath. Chilling at all times. As expected, very well written, very well plotted, the characters are very realistic - especially Julius - so much so that it could be the biography of a real person. Utterly compelling, I was stuck in the classic reader’s dilemma of being desperate to find out what happened next and not wanting it to end. I did manage to pace myself just correctly and thoroughly enjoyed this. Highly recommended.
  20. Finished Julius, Daphne du Maurier and, now that I know that it’s the life-story of Julius, submit it for this topic of Time
  21. I propose my current read of Julius, Daphne du Maurier, which is the life story of the fictional character Julius. Since the book starts with his birth and ends with his death I think it might fit
  22. Julius, Daphne du Maurier
  23. Just learned that Dead Souls was unfinished. Apparently Gogol himself burned parts of the manuscript
  24. Kaikeyi, Vaishnavi Patel
